After reading the attached article, I am scratching my head. Did I miss something?
 
The guy is kicked off the cheerleading squad and the school has "refused to give a reason for the disciplinary action" ?!?
 
Translation: we don't want you on the squad anymore and don't need a reason (gay)

Everyday Stigma May Take Toll on Lesbians, Gays

MONDAY, Oct. 10 (HealthDay News) -- The stigma and inequalities that lesbian, gay and bisexual people face on a daily basis can increase their stress level and affect their well-being, according to a new study.

"Imagine living life anticipating exclusion from your friends, family and professional circles simply because of who you are and who you love -- that resulting stress takes a toll on one's life and health," said the study's co-author, Ilan Meyer, of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law.

The researchers set out to determine how stress resulting from daily, non-traumatic events, such as isolation at work and estrangement from families, affected 57 lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) people. The researchers were interested in everyday occurrences, rather than overt abuse or hate crimes.

Black and Hispanic study participants reported the stress from homophobia, racism and sexism led to certain missed life opportunities, including educational advancement, and less self-confidence.

"For members of minority groups, day-to-day life experiences that may seem minor to others can and do have significant and lasting impact on one's well-being," said Meyer. "The idea that simply walking out your door will expose you to societal rejection and stigma creates a climate of stress that can lead to detrimental, long-term consequences."

The study was recently published online in Sexuality Research and Social Policy.

If a silver lining is to be found, some of the participants reported that being stigmatized helped to define them as individuals and forced them to explore new and more positive avenues they might not have considered otherwise.
 
The researchers concluded the findings could help shape public policy by shedding light on the less obvious effects of social inequality on lesbians, gays and bisexuals.

"The study's results show policymakers need to think more broadly than simply reducing extreme forms of abuse through measures like anti-bullying policies," said Meyer in a journal news release.
 
"Although reducing abuse and violence should be a primary focus, policy measures that enhance positive aspects of gay identity, like interventions that connect LGB persons to their communities, could help reduce the stress caused by social exclusion," Meyer said.

Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?

  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?

Student Says He Was Suspended, Kicked Off Cheer Squad for Gay Kiss

Is this life imitating art, or the other way around?

In a controversy that could be played out on the set of Glee, a male student at Alice High School in Texas claims that he was kicked off the cheerleading squad and suspended from school for two days after a surveillance tape showed him kissing another male student in a hallway.

The 17-year-old, who has spoken to the local media about the situation but does not want to be identified, told KRIS-TV in Texas that he feels he was targeted by administrators because of his sexual orientation, since public displays of affection are common throughout the school and rarely considered punishable offenses.

"We would be the ones getting caught because I'm sure we were the only ones, sexual orientation wise, being caught like that," the student told KRIS. "In this school [kissing] is everywhere. If that were the case, suspending everyone for that, half the school would be suspended."

The school has denied that the student was suspended for merely puckering up, yet the administration has refused to give a reason for the disciplinary action. After reviewing the case at the request of the student's parents, the district released a statement Monday saying that the suspension and removal from the cheer squad would stand, even though Alice High School principal Lucy Munoz told KRIS, "The district does not suspend students for kissing other students at school, regardless of the gender of the student."

So what was the real reason that the student was booted from the squad? Judging from the district's statement, it seems we'll never find out:
"The student code of conduct and cheer handbook are designed to improve conduct and encourage students to adhere to their responsibilities as members of the school community. The student and parents are clearly aware that the student was not removed from the squad for kissing another student at school. While the student is free to discuss certain aspects of his discipline in the media, the District cannot discuss the specifics of this incident and must respect the privacy rights of the students involved in this matter."
As for the student, he told KZTV that he and his parents disagree with the punishment, but have decided against pursuing further action. While it appears he won't be cheering this year, the student has managed to collect his own team of cheerleaders who support his call for equality.
