Country to benefit from new HIV/Aids vaccine - Nigeria will be the first African country to access the benefit of a new protective vaccine that will stop people from developing the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, AIDS as indication yesterday emerged that Cornell Micheal Nelson, one of the scientists who discovered the vaccine will be in Nigeria next month.
In a telephone chat with Vanguard, Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, Professor John Idoko disclosed that Cornell Micheal Nelson, will be in Nigeria by October 12, to attend a symposium, where he would be presenting a keynote address on the newly discovered vaccine.
The choice of Nigeria for this landmark event, is not unconnected with the country's large population and notable contribution to the fight against the HIV virus. With the discovery of the vaccine, the world may be on the verge of finally overcoming the threat posed by HIV and AIDS.
However, indications from the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, NIMR, revealed that Nigerian Scientists are excited over the vaccine which shows great potential to reduce the burden of HIV across the world.
According to former Director General of NIMR, Prof. Oni Idigbe, all is set for the symposium which would address other areas of the discovery.
Before now, various type of vaccines have been discovered in the past but none has shown great potential like the present vaccine discovered in Thailand.
According to the researchers, the AIDS vaccine could cut down the risk of developing the disease by a third.
Already, scientists across the world have hailed the breakthrough, saying it could be the first step to even better protection.
The new vaccine which works by stimulating the immune system -- is a combination of two previous treatments which had proved ineffective when used alone.
It was tested on 8,000 HIV negative male and female volunteers aged 18 to 30 in Thailand.
They were checked for infection every six months. The results found that the chances of catching HIV were almost 32 per cent lower if a person had been given the vaccine rather than a dummy injection.
The breakthrough -- funded by the US Military HIV Research Program and the Thai Ministry of Public Health - is regarded as a first step towards an effective vaccine against AIDS, which hits two million people a year.
Prof Aine McKnight, a viral expert from the University of London, said: For a quarter of a century the scientific community has been divided on whether a vaccine against HIV could be produced.
"Today that question is settled. This is exciting news, but the battle is far from won."
A spokesman from the World Health Organisation said: "The results are the first demonstration that a vaccine can prevent infection and are of great importance.
"These results have instilled new hope in the HIV vaccine research field and promise that a safe and highly effective HIV vaccine may become available for populations throughout the world."
The scientists, however advised that for now, the best protection remains having sex with a condom.

The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
- Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
- "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! Obama to address 3,000 gay activists

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama will deliver the keynote address Saturday to a gathering of gay and lesbian activists, a key constituency that hasn't always been receptive to the president's policies and style of leadership.
Supporters say Obama's accomplishments on gay rights issues have been substantial since he last headlined the annual National Dinner of the Human Rights Campaign, in 2009, including the repeal of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. However, his lack of support for gay marriage still stands out as a snub for many.
Obama currently supports same-sex civil unions, and has said his views on gay marriage are "evolving." He recently announced his support of the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, a 1996 law that defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
Organizations working actively to legalize same-sex marriage say they hope Obama eventually changes his stance.
"We applaud the administration's progress, while we also encourage him to 'evolve faster' on supporting full marriage equality," Stuart Gaffney, media director for Marriage Equality USA, said Saturday. He said he wasn't aware of any opposition within his organization to the HRC's selection of Obama as their keynote speaker.
"We look forward to the day soon when our President stands with that pro-equality majority," Gaffney added.
The Log Cabin Republicans, an organization that represents gay and lesbian conservatives, says Obama's appearance tonight is more about politics than substantive policy change.
"President Obama's appearance at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner this evening is more emblematic of their role as an ostensibly partisan organization than a representation of the gay and lesbian community," said Christian Berle, the group's deputy executive director.
Berle said Obama's stance on gay marriage didn't match that of most Americans.
"As all Americans are becoming open to marriage equality, the President is taking a retreat," Berle said. "Instead he is turning to the gay community for money and applause."
"If the President wants to deserve all the money and adulation he has already received from the gay community, he should announce his firm support for everyone's freedom to marry," Berle said.
Organizers of Saturday's event said Obama's record on gay rights issues is still strong, despite the lack of endorsement for marriage equality.
"This president has accomplished more in the last two years on behalf of LGBT Americans than was accomplished in the last 40 years," HRC Vice President Fred Sainz said. "From the repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' to dozens of policy directives, this president has made the lives of countless millions better and the Human Rights Campaign has endorsed the president's reelection."
Saturday's event is expected to draw 3,000 gay activists, and will take place at a convention center in downtown Washington. The speech will be streamed live online.
A CNN/ORC International poll taken Sept. 9-11 showed 53% of Americans believe marriages between gay and lesbian couples should be considered valid. That number has steadily been rising in CNN/ORC International polls since 2008.
Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
