RE; News Article

Too true. When we deny that bullying based on sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation occurs, we become an ally to a bully. Yes, people are bullied over many things other than that, but until we confront it, we will see more Justin Aabergs, bottom line

Natural Ways To Boost Immunity For Cold And Flu Season

Huffington Post - Oct 20, 2011 - By Jim Nicolai, M.D. for YouBeauty

Health and beauty can have an inner wholeness and balance that offers resilience against the external pressures of your environment. Among other things, this means that you can be exposed to certain infectious agents and not necessarily get sick.

As you go about your daily life, you will come into contact with germs -- it can't be avoided, no matter how hard you try.

Sure you need to wash your hands and cough into your sleeve, but what are some ways to shore up immunity during this time when infections of all kinds seem to rear their ugly head?

Here are five tips for entering the cold and flu season to keep your body resilient during this time:

1. Optimize Vitamin D Levels

This hormone (it's not actually a vitamin) has receptor sites in every area of the body including the immune system and respiratory tissue. Studies have linked vitamin D as necessary for the production of antimicrobial proteins from immune cells in response to infection.

Low levels of vitamin D in the blood are linked with increased incidence of upper respiratory infection. Adults should keep optimum levels by taking at least 2000 IU daily. Get your levels checked if you think you are low.

2. Learn About Immune Boosting Tonics

I like medicinal mushrooms like shiitake, maitake, reishi and cordyceps. You can take extracts of these in liquid or capsule form. My other favorite is a Chinese root called Astragalus, used to prevent illness and strengthen immunity once you do get sick. You can buy the root and make it into a tea or soup; otherwise, buy extracts in liquid or capsule form and take as directed.

3. Fight Viruses With Elderberry Extract

The fruit of the elderberry shrub (Sambucus nigra) has a long history of being used for colds and flu. It has been supported scientifically with studies from Israel showing that taking a liquid extract of elderberry reduced the duration of flu symptoms as compared to placebo over a period of a week's time. Its antiviral properties seem to come from the flavonoids that give elderberry its purple color.

4. Breathe Deeply

Do this correctly by using the muscles of your abdomen and the ones between your ribs (intercostals) to squeeze more air out of your lungs as you exhale. By moving more air out, you bring more air in. Allowing your breath to be fuller, deeper and more even helps you to optimize immunity and access spontaneous healing in your body.

5. Live Well

This has to do with proper lifestyle measures that we know we should be doing, but sometimes find difficult to manage. Make a concerted effort to get proper rest, eat and drink well, move your body and manage stress.

I recommend trying to get between at least seven to nine hours of sleep per night. You'll know how much your body needs based on how refreshed you feel when you wake up in the morning. Eat an anti-inflammatory diet filled with fruits and vegetables of a variety of colors. Try to get some exercise every day even if it's just 30 minutes of walking, and learn how to breathe well (for breathing, go back up to #4).
Take Action:
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! Further, Boycott Fox's Owner "Rupert Murcoch" and get him thrown in jail for illegal - political donations, corruption, greed, bribery, hacking!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI felt that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. For your safety -Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! "Georgia Executes Innocent People!"

Anti-gay bulling: Does silence = death?
By Charles C. Haynes - October 22, 2011 - Pocono Record

After a spate of high-profile media stories about gay teen suicides (nationwide, six in September alone), culture wars are returning to schools, where officials are caught in the crossfire in the fight over how to address the anti-gay bullying that has been implicated in some of the deaths.

Gay rights advocates insist that anti-bullying policies must include positive treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people. Christian conservatives support anti-bullying efforts in general, but demand that public schools keep silent about sexual orientation.

As with other deeply divisive social conflicts in America today, winners and losers are often determined by the red-blue state divide. In blue-state California, for example, schools are now implementing a new law that requires inclusion of GLBT Americans in teaching social studies.

Meanwhile in red-state Tennessee, the State Senate passed and the House is considering a law that would bar teachers from discussing homosexuality with elementary and middle school students -- dubbed the "don't say gay" bill by opponents.

For a case study of how this fight plays out on the local level, consider the current debate in Anoka-Hennepin School District, Minnesota's largest school system (which gets national media attention partly because much of it is in Michele Bachmann's congressional district).

Although Anoka-Hennepin school officials claim to be taking measures to stop bullying, six students filed suit in July charging that the district has failed to address persistent and widespread harassment of GLBT students. The U.S. Department of Justice is also investigating complaints about anti-gay bullying that allegedly goes unchecked by district staff.

Eight students in the district have committed suicide in the past two years. At least four of them reportedly struggled with issues of sexual identity.

Advocates for gay students argue that district policy banning discussion of GLBT issues in the curriculum -- and requiring staff to be "neutral on matters regarding sexual orientation" -- marginalizes gay students and contributes to the hostile environment they experience each day.

The Minnesota Family Council and other conservative Christian groups defend the silent treatment, arguing that bullying can be adequately addressed without discussion of GLBT issues. In their view, inclusion of sexual orientation in anti-bullying policies will be used by gay activists as a gateway for promotion of homosexuality in schools.

But as Anoka-Hennepin schools are learning the hard way, silence doesn't work. GLBT students aren't going anywhere -- and they are no longer content to be invisible or harassed. School districts that fail to take anti-gay bullying seriously can expect to be sued.

Finding common ground on this issue won't be easy, although the fact that all sides want safe schools is a good starting point. Surely there must be ways for schools to uphold the worth and dignity of all students -- including LGBT students -- while simultaneously acknowledging that Americans are divided about homosexuality.

Consider, for example, that many high schools now have student-initiated Bible clubs as well as Gay-Straight Alliances. The role of school officials is to let the voices be heard by ensuring a safe learning environment for members of both groups. By focusing on teaching students to address differences with civility and respect, schools can become places that are both safe and free.

A safe school is free of bullying and harassment. And a free school is safe for student speech even about issues that divide us.

Anoka-Hennepin school officials insist they are making changes to ensure that GLBT students are not bullied with impunity.

But these changes, as welcome as they are, will come too late for the family of 15-year-old Justin Aaberg, a student at Anoka High School who committed suicide last year.

Justin, his family would later learn, had been taunted and harassed because of his sexual orientation. Justin's mother believes that the district's refusal to address LGBT issues helped create a hostile school climate for her son and others -- and she now campaigns to break the silence in the schools.

When the culture war prevents inclusion of sexual orientation in anti-bullying policies, silence can equal death.
