    Today's Health/Excercise Tip:
    Are Avocados Good for You?

Ripened on the tops of evergreens that can grow up to 65 feet tall, the avocado is a fruit that provides a host of benefits and heart-healthy fats. Native to Central and South America, the fruit was introduced to Jamaica and the tropics of Asia before it was cultivated in the U.S. a century ago. The avocado is nicknamed the "alligator pear" because of its shape and leathery skin, but don't let its unusual appearance dissuade you from digging in.

Avocados are packed with oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat that lowers levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and has been shown to protect against breast cancer. The yellow-green flesh is also a good source of potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure, reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke. Make sure that the men in your life eat a daily dose of this delicious fruit, because it contains powerful ingredients shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer.

With a buttery consistency and a slight nutty flavor, avocados are delicious when enjoyed plain. Cut the fruit in half lengthwise and use a spoon to remove the pit. Then, peel, slice and chow down. One cup cubed is the recommended serving size. Though avocados are powerful disease fighters on their own, you can increase their benefits by adding them into a salad. Just make sure that your salad doesn't harm your waistline by avoiding creamy dressings, bacon bits and other high-calorie toppings.

Not a salad fan? Whip up a batch of guacamole, use the fruit as a substitute for mayonnaise on sandwiches or add slices to your favorite Mexican dish. Eaten cooked, puréed or straight off the branch, avocados are a food that is just too good to pass up. That's enough to make us say, "Holy Moly Guacamole!"
