Take Action:Health - Wellness - Exercise - Reflections:Gay Community at Higher Risk of Cancer, Claims US Study
by Nimisha Sachdev, Fench Tribune; 05/23/2011
A recent study has sent shocks in the society by claiming that gay men are almost at double the risk of getting affected with cancer against the normal men. By scanning the California Health Interview survey, including over 1,20,000 people over a period of three years, the team led by Ulrike Boehmer of the Boston University School of Public Health, claimed that gay men were 1.9 times more at the risk of cancer as compared to normal men.
The team observed that though no significant difference was observed among lesbian and straight women, gay and bisexual female were observed at double the possibility of affecting with dire consequences, following a cancer diagnoses.
Citing spiraling health concern found in lesbian and bisexual women post-cancer diagnosis, Ulrike Boehmer appealed for program and services specific for uplifting the health condition of lesbian and bisexual cancer survivors.
Though the study is being underplayed on the basis that it accounted only the data from cancer survivors and moreover, overlooked the reason about impact of variation in sexual orientation on the cancer survival rate, the team is of the opinion that sexual transmission of human papillomaviruses (HPV) is among the potential reason of spiraling rate of cancer among gay community.
- Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck's radio show and his quest spots on Fox News. Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights. Update: Boycott Successful: Update 4/7/2011: Beck has been fired by FOX NEWS! Radio stations dropping Beck as well in several locations. Now, tell FOX to stop having Beck as a Guest.
- Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
- Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
- Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
- Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
- End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
- Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
- Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
- BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
- BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
- Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
- Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
- NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Start Watching CBS Evening News.
- NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone, Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight. This is a step in the wrong direction.

Showdown brewing over Tennessee anti-gay law
By Lisa Keen on May 25, 2011 - Keen News Agency
Gay legal activists are already working on a legal challenge to a new state law in Tennessee, signed into law Monday by Republican Governor Bill Haslam, which prevents local governments from requiring their contractors to abide by local human rights ordinances.
The legislation, entitled the "Equal Access to Intrastate Commerce Act," was aimed at undermining a new Nashville metro area ordinance, signed into law in April. The ordinance prohibited city contractors from discriminating based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It was passed by the Nashville/Davidson County Metro Council.
Abby Rubenfeld, a Nashville attorney and a former legal director of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, said Tuesday that the new state law will "definitely be challenged--we are working on it right now."
Governor Haslam, who took office January 15, pitched his support for the law as a pro-business act, saying it relieved businesses of the necessity of navigating differing non-discrimination regulations from city to city. The Family Action Council of Tennessee argued that it does not target LGBT people, and noted that the law does not affect the Nashville Metropolitan Government ordinance prohibiting discrimination by the government against LGBT people.
But no attempt was made prior to passage of the Nashville ordinance to relieve businesses affected by a Nashville ordinance that prohibited contractors from discriminating based on age, race, sex, or disability.
Greg Nevins of Lambda Legal's Atlanta office said Lambda is not involved in mounting a legal challenge against the Tennessee law, but he called it "a terrible piece of legislation."
The Human Rights Campaign said Haslam was trying to score "cheap political points" by giving a "green light" to anti-LGBT discrimination. HRC noted that a number of large corporations--including FedEx, AT&T, Comcast, and the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce--opposed the new state law.
FedEx issued a statement May 20 saying it "values and promotes the unique contributions, perspectives, and differences" of all its employees and is "committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace."
State Rep. Glen Casada, a Republican from nearby Williamson County, introduced the "Equal Access" bill after the Nashville Metro Council passed a law requiring city contractors to sign an affidavit promising not to discriminate based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Specifically, the bill prohibits local ordinances from having non-discrimination laws broader than that of the state. According to Lambda Legal, Tennessee has no statewide laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in either public or private employment.
Casada told local television NewsChannel 5 that the Nashville ordinance amounted to having the city "dictating moral policy."
Another anti-gay bill--one that sought to prohibit teachers from providing any information about homosexuality to public school students in grades K through 8--passed the Tennessee Senate 19 to 11 on May 20 but did not get a vote in the House before the General Assembly adjourned May 21. The original bill--dubbed the "Don't Say Gay Bill"--was amended to limit sex education curricula "to natural reproduction science."
The Tennessee Equality Project said the bill "remains a threat to safe schools for all students in Tennessee," even though the bill no longer references homosexuality specifically.

DADT Repeal: Gay Troops To Hold Las Vegas Convention
Andrea Stone - Huffington Post - May 25, 2011
A group of actively serving gay, lesbian and bisexual military personnel is planning its first convention this fall in Las Vegas in what may be another sign that the "don't ask, don't tell" policy's days are numbered.
By scheduling its Armed Forces Leadership Summit for October 13-16 in the city with the slogan, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas," OutServe, an underground network of more than 3,000 gay troops, appears to be thumbing its nose at the 17-year-old rule that bars gays from openly serving and has led to the discharge of more than 14,500 military personnel.
OutServe also released an unscientific survey of its members Wednesday that found 78 percent of respondents said they were "out" to at least some in their unit. More than one in four said they had "come out" since President Barack Obama signed the bill to repeal DADT.
The findings, which may help explain the reasoning behind the high-profile summit, confirms that troops who have told colleagues they are gay have suffered "no negative impact," said group spokesman Jonathan Hopkins, a former Army captain and veteran of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The group said it hoped the summit would "provide an international forum on enhancing military readiness through encouraging an environment of respect with regard to sexual orientation and gender identity." Although it is unclear how many active-duty personnel will risk attending -- DADT remains in effect as the repeal process is implemented -- organizers say it will be open to veterans and civilians as well.
"We believe diversity is a force multiplier, and this conference will bring together veterans, active-duty military and other experts to help us leverage LGBT inclusion for the benefit of military readiness," said OutServe co-director JD Smith, who goes by a pseudonym because he is an Air Force officer.
In theory, DADT could be history by the time the summit opens. Training of troops is expected to be completed by August 15, although the largest service, the Army, has reportedly briefed fewer than one in four soldiers.
"Training is progressing well," Eileen Lainez, a Pentagon spokeswoman, said in an email. "While training is an essential component to meeting the standards described in the law, certification by the secretary (of Defense) and the chairman (of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) does not require 100 percent of our people to be trained."
The policy will remain in place until 60 days after senior military leaders and the president certify implementation the repeal will not compromise military readiness, unit cohesion and recruiting and retention.
House Republicans are trying to delay the repeal of DADT through a series of amendments to the defense authorization bill. But their efforts could be thwarted if repeal is certified before the legislation is finalized this fall.
Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
