How to Stay Fit For Life

As I get closer to entering my fourth decade of life, I am getting more and more people asking me how I stay in shape.  I take this as a compliment, but am also shocked that it is accepted that fitness should become more difficult or that it is ok to fall out of shape as we age.  Yesterday, I did an interview for thefitcast.com and the question surfaced again.  "How do you stay in shape with your busy schedule and travel?"  My answer revolved around what I call my 3 C's of Success:  Courage, Commitment and Consistency.  With these characteristics there is nothing that you cannot attain. Without them you will never reach your goals.

Courage

Taking a stand takes courage.  I have found that since most people don't stand for something, they often fall for anything.  Whether I am at home, on the road, at a party or sport event, I have the courage to eat well.  I also have the courage to make sure my kids eat well too.  I say it takes courage because like any warrior, you will meet opposition on your path to your goals. If I had a penny every time someone rolled their eyes at my food choices, told me to change my decision to skip dessert, or said it is fine for my kids to eat poorly, I would have a mountain of copper. Maybe it is true that misery loves company, but my crowd will never be this sad bunch. If you want something bad enough, you have to develop the courage to stand tall and get it.

Commitment

Most people are unfit because they have never committed themselves to exercise and good nutrition. To be successful in life, you must commit.  You must go and put everything behind it. There is no halfway in any thing you do. When there is commitment, there is no doubt. When was the last time that you were really committed to something?  How much commitment are you devoting to Your Training, Your Diet, Your Work, Your Family?

Most people never really commit to something even though they are doing it. They show up for class a time or two a week, but never go all out. They talk about getting lean, but continue to eat poorly. Those people will never be satisfied because deep down they know that they never gave their best. There is nothing more haunting than looking back on your life and knowing you could have done more.

Consistency

Perhaps the best kept secret that separates the achievers and the complainers is Consistency. I describe Consistency to my athletes as "Always or Never." Always eat right and you will get leaner.  Never skip workouts and you will be stronger. Doing something Occasionally, although convenient, doesn't produce results. I have found that the achievers do always what the mediocre do occasionally. Get consistent in your actions and I promise results. Need help to find the courage, commitment or consistency? I advise you to enlist the people closest to you for help. Here is an entertaining video that not only shows the 3 C's are important, but that they can also be fun.

  • Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck - Fox News.  Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights. Update: Boycott Successful: Update 4/7/2011: Beck has been fired by FOX NEWS!  Radio stations dropping Beck as well in several locations. 
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers.  Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well?  Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of  "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities.  A remedy: Demand Republicans to  support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform! 
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians.  Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores.  Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech!  STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores.  A huge PR Disaster for TARGET!  Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays.  Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although,  Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?  
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.    
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act).  ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of  LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet.   The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community. 
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC, CNBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops!  The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and now blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric.  Remember how poorly Trump  treated Rosie O'Donnel?  Now we know why he did that!  It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is bigot.  Unforgiveable!  Dump NBC because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"!  Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (who is unfortunately leaving).
  • NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone,  Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight.  This is a step in the wrong direction.
  • Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011:  Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, rumored to have them remain in some foreign stores.  This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to  the entire LGBT community around the world.  How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as  by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting.

Gov Bill Haslam Expected To Sign Bill To End Nashville's Gay Protections Law

The Tennessee Senate on Thursday approved a bill that would repeal Nashville's newly-approved gay protections ordinance.

The measure sponsored by Republican Senator Mae Beavers of Mt. Juliet was overwhelmingly approved in the Republican-controlled Senate with a 21-8 vote. The House approved a companion bill by a wide margin last month.

A minor change in the Senate version of the bill means it has to go back to the House for approval. Republican Governor Bill Haslam has indicated he supports the measure.

Nashville narrowly approved last month a plan to extend the city's gay protections to contractors, joining more than 100 communities across the nation. The city's 2009 law bans employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity (transgender protections).

Beavers' measure would strip the state of all gay protections laws by outlawing municipalities from enacting anti-discrimination ordinances that go beyond state laws, which do not include gay protections.

Supporters argued that equalizing state and local laws makes Tennessee an easier place to conduct business.

But in a video ad released by the Christian conservative Family Action Council of Tennessee, a different pitch is made for the measure.

In the video, a gruff-looking man is seen following a young girl into a playground restroom as a narrator asks, "Do gender differences matter to you?"

"It's not any kind of statement that those who are transgender or cross dress are sexual predators," the group's president, David Fowler, said in defending the ad. "It's that sexual predators will know how to take advantage of those opportunities afforded by law when the distinctions begin to get blurred with respect [to] who's rightfully or not in a restroom."
