45,000 Walkers Raise $6.2 Million at 26th Annual Aids Walk New York

New York, NY, - Today's 26th annual AIDS Walk New York (AWNY) drew a massive crowd of 45,000 participants to Central Park. The event began with a star-studded Opening Ceremony followed by a 10-kilometer walk, and raised an impressive sum for GMHC and 41 other vital AIDS service organizations in the tri-state area. Record-breaking corporate sponsorship bolstered the event's fundraising results, as did the large turnout of individual walkers, who together raised multi-millions of dollars to combat the epidemic.

"This year, New Yorkers once again united to rally and raise funds to support GMHC's life-saving work," said Craig R. Miller, Founder and Producer of the event. "Today's extraordinary total of $6,214,768 demonstrates that our participants and donors are laser-focused on doing the hard work it will take to end AIDS-through enormous generosity, heartfelt compassion, and unwavering solidarity."

"As we look back on 30 years of this devastating epidemic, I'm proud to see so many people walking with us, raising urgently needed funds, and committing to a future without HIV and AIDS," said Marjorie J. Hill, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of GMHC. "Infections among youth, African Americans, Latinos, women, and gay men are on the rise; an aging population living with HIV will soon be facing new obstacles to their health and wellbeing. Yet today, I witnessed a community ready to confront head-on the challenges of this disease-and win."

Celebrities made a strong showing at this year's event. Notable AIDS Walk supporters included Matt Bomer ("White Collar"); Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson,and Eric Stonestreet ("Modern Family"); Wilson Cruz ("My So-Called Life"); Conchata Ferrell ("Two and a Half Men"); Mondo Guerra and Jack Mackenroth ("Project Runway"); Laura Innes ("The Event"); Dot-Marie Jones ("Glee"); Nyambi Nyambi ("Mike and Molly"); Lee Pace ("The Normal Heart"); Mike Ruiz ("The A-List"); and CBS 2 news anchors Mary Calvi, Don Dahler, Maurice DuBois, Rob Morrison, Dana Tyler,and weathercaster Elise Finch.

Elected and appointed officials in attendance included U.S. Congressman Charles B. Rangel; New York State Senators Thomas K. Duane, Adriano Espaillat, Elizabeth Krueger, and Bill Perkins; New York State Assembly Members Herman D. Farrell, Jr., Richard N. Gottfried, Micah Kellner, and Aravella Simotas; and New York City Council Members Gale Brewer and Melissa Mark-Viverito.

The cast of Broadway's "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" performed "We Believe" from the new hit show. Four-time Tony winner, two-time Grammy winner, and television star Audra McDonald ("Private Practice") closed the Opening Ceremony with her performance of "You'll Never Walk Alone."

AWNY corporate support achieved yet a new record level this year, anchored by its Presenting Sponsor, New York drugstore chain Duane Reade. As part of its sponsorship, Duane Reade sold special $1 paper red-ribbon pinups in its 255 New York metropolitan area stores beginning April 3 through today. The Duane Reade Foundation and the Duane Reade in-store pinup sales program have raised more than $400,000 for this year's AWNY, setting a new fundraising record.

Premier Sponsors included Bristol-Myers Squibb and Delta Air Lines. Grand Sponsors included Bloomberg, CBS 2, and Gap Inc. Principal Sponsors were Barclays Capital, Stanley and Fiona Druckenmiller, Empire BlueCross BlueShield, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, and The Village Voice.
Take Action:
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers.  Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well?  Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!  In conclusion, O'Reilly expressed out-right Hatrad of the LGBT Community. 
  • Boycott Arizona the home of  "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities.  A remedy: Demand Republicans to  support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform! 
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores.  Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech!  STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores.  A huge PR Disaster for TARGET!  Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays.  Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people.  Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays! 
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.    
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act).  ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of  LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet.   The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: Boycott Donald Trump [Tune Out TRUMP], The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC, CNBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and his other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops!  The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred. He is a birther as well and brings out all the Bigots!  Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel?  Now we know why he did that!  It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is bigot.  Unforgiveable!  Get Ready to dump NBC & NBC NEWS because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"!  Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (Too Bad, Katie is leaving).
  • NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone,  Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight.  This is a step in the wrong direction.  Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011:  Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, rumored to have them remain in some foreign stores.  This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to  the entire LGBT community around the world.  How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as  by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting.  Still "no comment" from APPLE!

Phoenix Suns executive opens up to public that he's gay

Rick Welts, in his ninth season as president of the Phoenix Suns and his second as chief executive officer, hid that he was gay for a long time for fear the acknowledgment would impede his rising sports career.

"This is one of the last industries where the subject is off limits," Welts said in an interview with The New York Times. "Nobody's comfortable in engaging in a conversation."

But Welts, 58, 40 years into a sports career, was no longer comfortable keeping it secret.

Last month, he told The Times, he informed NBA Commissioner David Stern, who had figured it out long before but felt it wasn't his place to raise the subject.

The day after their conversation is when controversy developed over Los Angeles Lakers Lakers guard Kobe Bryant mouthing the expletive homosexual slur toward a referee.

Welts lost a partner to AIDS in 1994, unable to fully share his grief, and a 14-year relationship ended two years ago, in part because he wouldn't go public.

He also opened up recently to Suns star Steve Nash, who thought everyone already knew.

"I just think it's a shame, for all the obvious reasons, that this is a leap that he has to take," Nash told The Times. "He's doing anyone who's not ready for this a favor."
