Avoiding the gym gross-out

You know that guy at the gym--the one whose sweat is dripping down his face as he grunts out one last rep, stands up, and leaves a pool behind on the bench.

Gross, definitely, and although sweat in itself can't hurt you, the germs and bacteria it carries could cause a cold, stomach illness, or staph infection.

Luckily, the odds of getting sick from a sweaty treadmill are low. "Of the 60,000 or so germs that people may come in contact with, only about 1 percent are potentially dangerous," says Philip Tierno, Ph.D., author of The Secret Life of Germs.

Use these four tips to reduce your chances of catching a bug while building muscle.

Bring Several Towels

You only need to worry about bacteria if you touch your mouth, eyes, nose, or any cuts before washing your hands. To get rid of some germs along with sweat, keep two different-colored towels handy. Using one rag for equipment and one for yourself will keep your bacteria separate from strangers' bacteria around the gym. And don't forget a third towel to dry off with after your shower.

Talk to the Trainers

Ask gym staff when the equipment you're about to use was last cleaned. Bacteria can live anywhere from a few hours to a few days once they're on machines and weights. Sweat can even carry Hepatitis B and other diseases, and can be passed from one person to another, particularly during contact sports, according to a British study.

Kill Germs

Wiping down a bench with an antiseptic or Clorox wipes will kill the offending bugs, Tierno says, so take advantage if your gym has bottles of disinfectant spray and paper towels for your use.
 
Clean Up After Yourself
 
There's nothing quite like sitting down in a warm puddle of somebody else's sweat. When you're done exercising, make sure you haven't left anything for the next slob to remember you by.

  • Boycott Arizona the home of  "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities.  A remedy: Demand Republicans to  support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform! 
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores.  Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech!  STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores.  A huge PR Disaster for TARGET!  Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays.  Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people.  Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays! 
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.    
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act).  ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of  LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet.   The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: Boycott Donald Trump [Tune Out TRUMP], The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC, CNBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and his other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops!  The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred. He is a birther as well and brings out all the Bigots!  Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel?  Now we know why he did that!  It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is bigot.  Unforgiveable!  Get Ready to dump NBC & NBC NEWS because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"!  Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (Too Bad, Katie is leaving).
  • NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone,  Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight.  This is a step in the wrong direction.  Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011:  Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, rumored to have them remain in some foreign stores.  This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to  the entire LGBT community around the world.  How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as  by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting.  Still "no comment" from APPLE!

Students protest 'Don't say gay' bill
NASHVILLE, May 14, 2011 (UPI) -- Scores of students came to the Tennessee state capital to protest a bill that would ban homosexuality from sex education classes in the early grades.

By Thursday, there were about 75 young people at the capital, mostly from three Nashville schools, The Nashville Tennessean reported. Only a few showed up Monday but the numbers swelled as the word spread on Facebook.

David Gilmore, a student at Martin Luther King Magnet School, showed up in a T-shirt that said "I love my two dads."

The bill, SB 49, has been nicknamed the "Don't Say Gay" bill. It would limit teachers to discussion of heterosexuality in sex education classes through the eighth grade.

"Human sexuality is a complex subject with societal, scientific, psychological, and historical implications; those implications are best understood by children with sufficient maturity to grasp their complexity," the bill says in its argument.

David Gilmore stood amid the clatter of the rotunda of the state Capitol, a high school senior in shorts and T-shirt amid the tour groups and suited lobbyists.

A senior excused for the day from Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet High School, Gilmore came to convey the message that was emblazoned across his chest: "I (love) my two dads."

"I think anti-gay discrimination is completely wrong because my dad's gay, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with him," he said. "Hiding something doesn't fix it."

Gilmore is one of the students from three downtown Nashville high schools who have begun a protest campaign against a bill that would ban discussion of homosexuality in schools before the ninth grade. The effort grew over the week from a handful of students on Monday to a crowd of about 75 on Thursday.

The students hope to persuade lawmakers to vote down the measure or its sponsor, Sen. Stacey Campfield, R-Knoxville, to drop the proposal. Campfield says he has no plans to back down.

SB 49, or the "Don't Say Gay" bill, as it's known by its opponents, would prohibit teachers from discussing any sexual orientation other than heterosexuality with middle and elementary school students.

"Human sexuality is a complex subject with societal, scientific, psychological, and historical implications; those implications are best understood by children with sufficient maturity to grasp their complexity," the bill says.

Awareness of the bill has grown. Fox News Channel interviewed Campfield when the bill was sent to the floor in late April, and The Daily Show featured the measure this week. Activists have passed out T-shirts at local high schools.

The students have held three protests, each larger than the one before. They plan to gather again on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The protests are ramping up as the bill's chances of passing this year appear to be shrinking. The sponsor of the measure in the House never asked for it to be heard in that chamber. The Senate has put off a vote on the bill five times, most recently on Thursday.

Campfield called for the most recent delay, rolling the bill to Wednesday. He hopes a Senate vote will lead the House to take it up next year.

But other Republican senators have been advancing another measure dealing with sex education. It would ask the state Board of Education to conduct a review of its sex ed curriculum and deliver a report to the legislature in February.

That measure might prompt senators to put off a vote on Campfield's bill until next year.

Bullying feared

So far, the protest campaign has drawn students from three downtown Nashville high schools - MLK, Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet and University School of Nashville.

Events have mainly been coordinated by word of mouth or through a Facebook page. The campaign's timing takes advantage of flexible, end-of-year school schedules in which students can get excused for a period or exempted from exams.

The students say they are against the bill because it would discourage schools from adopting bullying policies that bar anti-gay slurs and actions. The bill also stifles academic freedom and creates the impression that homophobia is acceptable, they say.

"This is really my generation's civil rights movement, so I think it's important to show that people do care about it, that people outside the Senate chamber are affected," said Allie Horick, a senior at Hume-Fogg.

Metro Councilman Jamie Hollin briefly joined the protest, telling the students to "give them hell."

Hollin was at the Capitol to watch a vote on another bill before the Senate, a measure that repeals Metro's law against discrimination by city contractors toward gay, lesbian and transgendered people.
