Researchers have identified a gene variant associated with a 16 percent drop in body fat. Good news, right? Unfortunately--and to the researchers' surprise--men who carried the variant had higher levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, lower levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, and increased insulin resistance.
And the news gets worse: Roughly 64 percent of men carry the gene variant, according to the study of 75,000 people.
So what's the deal? The researchers found that these men have less subcutaneous fat--or fat just beneath the skin--but more visceral fat.
Visceral fat builds up around your heart and other organs, and can lead to heart disease and organ failure, explains David Karasik, Ph.D., one of the study's researchers and a director at the Harvard-affiliated Institute for Aging Research.
Karasik couldn't say for certain whether the variant actually caused the visceral fat buildup. It may be that genetically skinny guys may just eat more visceral-fat-building junk food, he says.
How can you drop visceral fat? Fiber. In a recent study, people who ate the most soluble fiber gained the least amount of visceral fat over 5 years. Find the soluble stuff in fruits and vegetables such as apples, peas, and pinto beans.

- Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.

- "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

In a move largely seen as a compromise over the rights that can be afforded to gay and lesbian couples, Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee on Saturday signed into law a bill that legalizes civil unions, making his state the fifth in the nation to allow them.
The bill -- which was signed just over a week after New York legalized same-sex marriage -- will take effect later Saturday, according to the governor's spokesman Christian Vareika.
The law will provide same-sex couples with a host of new state tax breaks, health-care benefits and greater ease of inheritance.
Such unions are currently permitted in New Jersey and Illinois, and will be allowed in Delaware and Hawaii beginning Jan. 1, 2012. California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada also allow for "comprehensive domestic partnerships," largely considered an equivalent to their civil union counterparts.
Earlier this week, and despite robust opposition to the measure, the bill sailed through the state Senate by a count of 21-16.
But it also drew sharp criticism from religious leaders and opposition groups who say it will lead to court-ordered action that eventually legalizes same-sex marriage: Similar legal action in Connecticut and Massachusetts resulted in those states adopting same-sex marriage laws.
Chafee, an independent who is supportive of same-sex marriage -- says civil unions are "a step in the right direction," according to his spokesman, Michael Trainor.
Gay rights activists -- like Marriage Equality Rhode Island -- say that while they support the civil union bill, they would have preferred legislation that permits couples to wed.
Currently, Rhode Island and Maine are the only states in New England that do not permit same-sex marriage.
