I am of Indian Origin, and a Hindu (non-practising). I posted the original article after reading it in marathi, which is an Indian regional language; which my parents speak. The newspaper in marathi had amplified the coverage of the Health Minister's remarks with other gay-bashing remarks of its own. The newspaper is owned by The Times of India group, from Proctor and Gamble.
I then searched online and heard Mr Azad speak in Hindi, which I understand as well. I'm sorry, but I cannot see how it was misinterpreted - he clearly said (in Hindi) that "men having sex with men is a western disease; which is now happening in India as well". He then emphasised on this saying that Indians have never been gay (!!!) and that this 'disease' should be eradicated.
He spoke this on the forum for control of AIDS.
I cannot excuse his behaviour, as a fellow Indian myself.

Moderator: Ralph, I am so happy to have you in this group. AS I stated earlier, I found several articles on this. Now may I add, they were extremely credible sources. AS stated, I was so shocked, I was going to post the article; but, you beat me to it. There is absolutely no excuse for a health manager of a country to say any of it. I am so well aware of the hate that LGBT Indians rec'v and it is sad. No one in North America has any idea how serious it is until they go to a 3rd world country, southern Asia, middle east, Pacific, etc. Yes, there are a few so-called safe places to frolic; but, not a whole country. I can imagine that this person's disgusting remarks only cause gay Indians to commit suicide. I am furious and so should everyone else. Please continue to keep us informed.

The Government of India Health minister made some remarks that he claims were
misunderstood, whether that is true ot ot or not, Homosexuality is not a crime
in India anymore and has not been for a few years I believe.
if he was stating his own beliefs then he was stupid to do so.
India is changing.
Also, Hindus do not have the same intolerance level that Moslems do.
I am not being prejudiced... its a f a fact.
That is why religious Hundus are vegetarians as all life is precious.
My sister and myself wwere introduced to Hindu culture through her studying
Indian Classical Dance ( that means the Religious Dance mainly) and subsequently
have met many Indian people.
From watching the media coverage I know that that the embarrassment of the
Indian Government will cauase some claerification to be made.

Not right, but in his opinion as well as his dept, may be a fact. India may be changing; but gay people are leaving India. We complain in the USA, Canada, etc. It is much worst in India. India has a class system. The LGBT community may be the psychologically ill class according to this guy. ......That is serious and not worth defending him or the govt of India for not removing this person immediately from power. homosexuality is a western disease and that it is spreading in India. This has
sparked considerable outrage, not only in the Indian Gay community, but also by
NGOs and the NACO (National Aids Control Organisation - which, incidentally,
comes under the Union Health Ministry).Â
