Take Action:Health - Wellness - Exercise - Reflections:Are You Tough-Or Stupid?
by Mike Zimmerman - August 25, 2011 - Men's Health
"I once fought two days with an arrow through my testicle."
That's one of my favorite tough-guy lines from the movies. Know the film? Doesn't matter, really. But the line illustrates a big blind spot for guys, the fine line between Tough and Stupid.
You could argue that fighting with an arrow through your testicle for 2 days is tough. You could also declare it stupid if you want to get laid after the fight is over. How about a real-life example: Pitcher Jason Marquis pitching on a broken leg. Stupid, right? Well, what about Curt Schilling pitching on a bloody ankle? Everyone would say tough. Both guys want to sacrifice their bodies for a greater good. So where's the line? When does tough become stupid?
OK, forget pro athletes and fictional movie characters. What about you? Are you like this: A buddy of mine recently has been dealing with excruciating back pain, sizzling nerves down the back of his legs, the works. His wife made two separate doctor appointments for him. He canceled both. I gave him some foolproof exercises to do for lower back pain, as well. He doesn't do them (so they aren't as foolproof as I thought). This week the guy went on a business trip that required 6 hours of drive time. The guy can barely put his socks on in the morning.
Tough? Or stupid?
Exactly.
University of Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summit's big reveal this week that she has the early stages of Alzheimer's-and will continue to coach through itis widely hailed as the definition of tough.
But her actions borderlined on stupid for months. Why? Well, it took her a long time to finally break down and go to a doctor for her symptoms (drawing blanks on which plays to call during games, for example). And when the test results came back? She nearly attacked her doctor.
If Men's Health has one mission, it must be to help our readers eliminate as much stupidity from their lives as possible. So here's the thing, gents: Tough, for the most part, IS stupid. In real life, no one gives a crap if you're "playing through" back pain, or growling on an undiagnosed knee issue, or blowing green goo all over your computer keyboard because you're too Tough to go to a doctor and get it checked out.
Why do people avoid doctors? It's not fear that the doctor will find something. It's not the time-suck or expense. You know what it is?
People don't want their routines disrupted.
Coach Summit was enraged that her routine-leading one of the finest college hoops programs on the planet-was disrupted. And now she's going forward with that routine, albeit with the help of her coaching staff and players. Jason Marquis and Curt Schilling refused to disrupt their routines by risking long-term injury. Keep the machine going, screw the disruption, push through it harder, faster, angrier. Like the guy with the arrow through his testicle-that's Liam Neeson in Kingdom of Heaven, by the way-would rather fight and die with a skewered nut than hit the medical tent in cowardice.
Guys, if you have a problem, symptoms of something strange or serious, back pain, green goo, headaches, or anything else that you are determined to Tough It Out against . . . don't be stupid. Disrupt your routine. Go to the doctor. You may find yourself with a new routinetaking blood pressure meds, or doing physical therapy, or whatever the treatment is for your particular problem.
Look at Coach Summit. She's accepted a new routine. That's tough. But it ain't stupid.
- Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck's radio show and his quest spots on Fox News. Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights. Update: Boycott Successful: Update 4/7/2011: Beck has been fired by FOX NEWS! Radio stations dropping Beck as well in several locations. Now, tell FOX to stop having Beck as a Guest.
- Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
- Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! Boycott Fox's Owner "Rupert Murcoch" and get him thrown in jail for illegal - political donations, corruption, greed, bribery, hacking!
- Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
- Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
- End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
- Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
- Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
- BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
- BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
- Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
- Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
- "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

Taxpayer Money Used To Fight Gay Marriage in Iowa
Towerland - Aug 29, 2011 - by Penn Bullock
The AP reports that a conservative group used federal money to fund a campaign against gay marriage in Iowa.
And it gets worse: the group is a subsidiary of the The Family Leader, sponsor of the crazy marriage pledge that Bachmann and Perry have signed.
The $2.2 million grant from the Dept. of Health and Human Services was supposed to be spent on marriage counseling. But the group, calling itself the Iowa Family Policy Center, evidently has a loose definition of "marriage counseling," because it used some of the taxpayer money to wage a campaign against three state supreme-court justices who legalized gay marriage in Iowa. And what marriage counseling the group did do, it denied to gay couples. So not only was taxpayer money used to fund an anti-gay-marriage crusade; it also went to support discrimination.
Looking at the Iowa Family Policy Center's website, it's hard to imagine how federal officials justified giving them taxpayer dollars in the first place. It says right there on the homepage:IFPC, a 501(c)3 organization, believes that presenting the truth through education is fundamental in reversing the breakdown of a productive, ordered society caused by the failure of families to produce God-fearing church, civic, social, and family leaders. One of IFPC's key strategies is to engage Christians with truthful, biblical, and consistent messages. Then the group talks about its partnership with the The Truth Project - "a powerful DVD-based small group Christian worldview curriculum produced by Focus on the Family."
And these guys got $2.2 million in federal funds. How is that legal?
Now for the good news! Iowa's senate leader is vowing to block a proposed anti-gay-marriage amendment before it can come to a vote in the state legislature.
Michael Gronstal is a Democrat, and his legislative power will allow him to keep the amendment dormant for at least several years. The aforementioned Family Policy Center has been lobbying for its ratification. In an interview with The Associated Press, Gronstal said he knows his stand against letting voters decide whether to amend the Iowa Constitution to ban gay marriage could hurt him with some constituents, but he was willing to take the risk...
"I'm not going to put discrimination into the state's constitution," said Gronstal, a Democrat from Council Bluffs.
Gronstal said he believes his position on gay marriage will attract as many voters as it repels.
"My read is the public at large is changing pretty significantly," Gronstal said. "It used to be that if you're under the age of 30, two-thirds of you were probably fine with gay marriage and if you were over 50, two-thirds of you were against it."
Now, Gronstal said, "more like two-thirds of the people under 40 are fine with it."Can you imagine that? A politician siding with young people against the outdated attitudes of an older generation? A politician holding to a principle even though he knows it will cost him some votes? If only there were more Gronstals around when 30 states ratified anti-gay-marriage/civil-union amendments over the last decade.
Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
