Health - Wellness - Exercise - Reflections:
Boost Your Mood With Exercise

By Gina Roberts-Grey, August 22, 2011

The benefits of working out aren't just physical – exercise can also stave off sadness and boost your mood when you're battling depression. So why does moving your body help your brain and what are the best ways to make use of this powerful, natural antidepressant? Learn now.

If you're depressed, the first step is to see your doctor or a psychologist to start treatment with talk therapy and/or medication. But more mental-health professionals are prescribing exercise too.

For people with severe depression, physical activity can boost the effectiveness of antidepressant medication, says Danine Fruge, M.D., director of women's health and family medicine at the Pritikin Longevity Institute & Spa in Miami. And in some instances, "a person with mild to moderate depression can control symptoms with exercise," she adds.

The reason: Exercise improves brain chemistry and can help people with depression re-establish healthy behaviors, according to an April 2010 analysis of dozens of studies on the topic by the Anxiety Research & Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University.

As a result, "people who exercise report fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression," says Jasper Smits, Ph.D., study leader and co-director of the program.

Starting an effective exercise program is as simple as walking out your front door.

"It's free – or very low-cost, relatively easy and a lot of fun," Fruge says. "Just about everyone has a pair of shoes and, in most cases, that's all you need to start some form of exercise."

Read on to see how a little physical activity can elevate your mood, fight off fatigue and reduce anxiety. Why Moving Your Body Helps Your Brain

Working out sets off a chemical reaction in the brain that's good for anyone – depressed or not.

"When you exercise, your brain instantly revs up production of endorphins – chemicals that help elevate mood, improve brain function and concentration, and give an overall sense of well-being," Fruge says.

That's why you end a gym workout or long walk happier than when you started, with a feeling of being "good tired."

Staying active also balances cortisol, a steroid hormone produced under stress that creates the fight-or-flight feeling, Fruge says. Reducing cortisol levels helps prevent an anxiety attack and stabilizes mood

If you exercise regularly, the emotional benefits become long-term: "Physical activity can produce chemical changes in the brain that lead to the eventual `rewriting' of memory, which makes an event seem less traumatic. So you feel less drained, depressed or sad."

Staying fit can also stave off side effects – both from depression and antidepressant medications – such as weight gain.

If you're comfort-eating, exercise can curb weight gain and the compulsion to overeat, Fruge says.

Exercise Effectively

You don't have to run marathons or spend hours a day in the gym to get the mood-boosting benefits.

"Even moderate aerobic exercise 3-4 times a week will produce a pronounced effect in a relatively short time," says psychiatrist Robert L. Pyles, M.D., a clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School and president-elect of the American Psychoanalytic Association.

The types of movements you choose target different depression issues, he says.

A long, peaceful walk can relieve stress and recharge mental batteries. Free weights maintain muscle tone, enhancing appearance and leading to a greater feeling of well-being.

Short, intense workouts – 30 minutes of exercising at a level that gets you breathing hard – help release pain-inhibiting endorphins quickly, immediately enhancing your mood.

For the greatest overall benefit, Pyles recommends alternating aerobic workouts with weight training. Here's his recommendation for an ideal workout regime:

•Every other day, walk slowly on a treadmill for 90 seconds, then ramp up the speed to a rapid but tolerable level and run for 30-45 seconds. Continue to alternate that pattern for 30-45 minutes.

•On the other days, lift light free weights.

To avoid burnout, start slow and work your way up. And don't try to do more than you're willing to accomplish on a regular basis.

No matter what kind of exercise you do, be consistent, Pyles adds. "That's what will keep your brain's production of mood-altering chemicals balanced."

Also, keep in mind that any amount of activity helps. "Just moving is the biggest goal," Fruge says.

How to Get Started

Motivating yourself to exercise can be a struggle, especially if you're depressed. Here are Fruge's tips to jumpstart an exercise routine:

•Make it enjoyable. Don't exercise alone: Ask a friend to join you on a power walk through a park or around a mall. Incorporating some social activity makes exercising more fun.

•Mix it up. It's easy to get bored walking the same route every day or running on a treadmill. Alternate routes, cross-train on different exercise machines, listen to a variety of music and even wear different colors of clothing.

•Set a reminder. If you want to work out in the morning, lay out workout clothes and shoes before going to bed. When you wake, you'll see the reminder and will have overcome one obstacle to working out.

•Be accountable. Ask a friend or family member to track your exercise schedule and check in once a week for progress updates, to discuss any obstacles and offer kudos when you've hit an exercise milestone.

•Go easy on yourself. Berating yourself over a missed workout or shortened routine will only make you feel worse. Instead, remind yourself of how often in the past month you did work out, and use those successes to stay motivated.

•Reward yourself. Set obtainable workout goals. For example, if you follow your exercise plan for a week, treat yourself to a massage, movie or new workout gear. Earning treats through hard work will boost your confidence even more.

•Focus on immediate benefits. Waiting for long-term rewards of exercise – such as major weight loss or improved cardiovascular fitness – is a challenge, especially if you're depressed. Instead, focus on improvements you notice right away, such as a better mood, less stress and more energy.

Foods for Fitness

A healthy diet increases the effectiveness of your exercise plan.

Fuel your body before workouts – and replenish afterward – with foods that won't sap energy or counter the good-mood effects you're getting. Stay away from the morning bagel or fast-food burger on the way to the gym.

"Foods high in simple sugars and fat tend to make us sluggish," Fruge says. "They don't give the brain the building blocks to make `feel-good' chemicals."

If you're already fatigued from depression, that added dose of food-related doldrums can really run you down.
Take Action:
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! In conclusion, O'Reilly expressed out-right Hatrad of the LGBT Community.
  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people. Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays!
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating over 1 mIllion dollars to anti-gay marriage groups + serious history of employment discrimination of LGBT community.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC renew the clown's show after he pulled all such low-class shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Dump NBC because they re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! NBC, Really? Update June 1, 2011: Trump now claims that Obama's long form, original birth certificate is fake. And NBC keeps this hater? NBC, You Kidding Us?

Redefining Hate: Pro-Gay Activists Should Reconsider Rhetoric
Jonathan Merritt and Tim Willard - Huffington Post - Aug 22, 2011

The wordsmithing Brits behind the Oxford Dictionary define "hate" as "hostile actions motivated by intense dislike or prejudice." But words take on new meanings as people speak them, often deriving more from the context of their usage than from their actual definitions.

The word "hate" has become one of many such grammatical casualties as some now use it to describe the positions of any who vary from emerging cultural norms.

Among offenders are gay activists who increasingly define anyone who believes that marriage should be applied only in the context of monogamous, heterosexual union as anti-gay and hateful. But is a belief in traditional marriage an inherently hateful posture?

Blogs erupted last month with news that Blake Mycoksie, founder of TOMS Shoes, apologized for speaking at an event hosted by Focus on the Family. The Christian non-profit is "dedicated to helping families thrive," but has long opposed same sex marriage. Bloggers at Change.org lamented Mycoskie's association with what they termed an "anti-gay hate-group." He responded with a public apology:

"Had I known the full extent of Focus on the Family's beliefs, I would not have accepted the invitation to speak at their event. It was an oversight on my part and the company's part and one we regret."

The move against Focus incited other activists to apply pressure to companies like Apple, Microsoft and Delta Airlines to cease their involvement with the Charity Give Back Group (CGBG). CGBG encourages consumers to give to more than 200,000 charities, including socially conservative groups like Family Research Council, when they purchase items from over 600 brand retailers.

Ben Crowther, a student at Western Washington University, collected more than 20,000 signatures on a petition to Apple, prompting the removal of iTunes from CGBG.

"I knew that once this issue was brought to Apple's attention, they would not want to be a part of CVN because it funds anti-gay hate groups," Crowther said. Microsoft and Delta caved to the pressure as well.

The third hammer fell last Wednesday, this time on Chicago pastor Bill Hybels and his Willow Creek Church. Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz announced he would withdraw from Hybels' Leadership Summit, an annual conference at Willow Creek that simulcasts to more than 168,000 people worldwide. Schultz's decision immediately followed a petition from Asher Huey on Change. org.

The ultimate coup, however, may lie just around the corner. Change.org has issued yet another petition soliciting PBS to have Bert and Ernie marry. Big Bird and Snuffleupagus, you're next.

This recent shelling of Christian groups by those who support same sex marriage is not unique. The rhythm of crossfire over marital law has become a staple in America's culture wars. But it does raise questions about the prudence of applying emotional labels to those who disagree with one's position.

Are organizations that oppose same sex marriage, and people who associate with them, hate-mongers? Should we assume those who support the traditional definition of marriage are "motivated by intense dislike or prejudice"?

American Christians must surely wrestle with a sordid history on same sex issues. In years past, some believers opposed funding for HIV research and aid because they viewed the illness as God's judgment on sexual immorality. Worse still, the faithful have often employed angry, reactive and, yes, even hateful rhetoric when speaking about the LGBT community.

But today's Christian leaders seek common ground solutions to same sex problems, even as many still hold to a traditional definition of marriage. Willow Creek Church, for example, disassociated with the controversial ex-gay Christian group Exodus International in 2009. And none can deny the softer, less partisan posture taken by Focus on the Family since it's former President James Dobson retired and Jim Daly took the reins.

When gay activists wield the label of hate against such organizations, their efforts turn counter-productive. They simply reinforce the conservative talking point that gay activists cannot be satisfied shy of full capitulation to their positions. Turning up the rhetorical heat serves no purpose other than retrenching your opposition and inflaming an already contentious issue.

We live in a world that glorifies tolerance. It's ironic that those who often champion this characteristic are quick to abandon it when they encounter people who disagree with their perspectives. Tolerance is a two-way street. Advocates on both sides of contentious issues should avoid extreme rhetoric and name-calling in attempts to marginalize political opponents.

As Jim Daly rightly responded, "'Hate' is too big a word to be thrown around with so little discretion. It is a damaging and dangerous thing to hang such an emotional epithet on a person or group because they think differently about some issues than you do."

These labeling efforts are also inappropriate. The word "hate" is too potent and carries too much baggage to be thoughtlessly tossed around. Those engaged in public discourse must display better judgment in the words they choose. The importance of the marriage debate demands our commitment to intelligent, winsome and precise language.

It's time to stop applying hurtful and emotional labels to people who disagree with us. This tactic is more than poor form; it's bad grammar. And that's something that these two writers absolutely hate.
