NPR disappoints listeners by airing claim that 'ex-gay' therapy works

August 3, 2011 - Metro Weekly
On August 1, NPR's Morning Edition aired a story that sought to portray "two sides" of a debate surrounding gay-to-straight "conversion therapy."

NPR says it was inspired by widespread reports that Marcus and Michelle Bachman's Christian therapy business uses the discredited practice on gay patients. The report included claims made by Rich Wyler, an "ex-gay" man who says the "therapy" positively changed him into a heterosexual:
"The actual dynamic between me and the male world shifted. And my feelings for men shifted from fear and attraction to brotherhood and connection.... I really don't [feel attracted to men ever]. There's no sexual component at all."
Morning Edition also spoke with another man, Peterson Toscano, who after 17 years of "therapy" realized that it had not changed his sexual orientation except in a detrimental and traumatizing way:
"Well, I had done so much work, and so I had to believe that something had to come out of it.... I just woke up, and my brain was clear, and I asked myself 'What the hell are you doing? This is crazy! You're not changing. You're not fooling anyone....' It took really hard work to get my brain back, and to recover from the emotional and psychological damage that I had experienced under that care."
Reporter Alix Spiegel next reported that an American Psychological Association task force concluded that there is "no compelling evidence [that] the kind of change Rich Wyler says he experienced is possible." And that psychologists are not compelled to do what their patients want because it would sometimes be unethical.
Wyler responded to the AFA's position with, "How dare they tell me that my goal is not legitimate?" claiming that "client self determination" is part of the APA's ethics. He expressed sour grapes about transgender people being allowed to seek psychological assistance during transition.
Spiegel and NPR are being criticized for the report -- particularly for not conveying the reality that "reparative/conversion therapy" is a debate between religious, political organizations and a nearly unanimous body of science.
Research shows that "ex-gay" techniques nearly always fail to eliminate the clients' same-sex attractions. And, with an overwhelming body of evidence facing "ex-gay" hucksters, many have switched to stated goals of managing and altering the "temptations" of gay men and lesbians as if they suffer from some kind of homosexual addiction.

Equality Matters:
"By describing the debate over 'ex-gay' therapy as 'raging in psychological circles,' NPR creates the illusion that some respected and credible scientific sources actually support the practice. They don't.

"This kind of reporting has the effect of desensitizing readers to the real harms of reparative therapy: lowered self-esteem, depression, suicidal behavior, etc. Research has demonstrated that when news outlets present both sides of a political issue without commenting on which side is correct, readers tend to feel powerless to determine which position is actually the right one."
Think Progress:
"The reality is that there is no debate about ex-gay therapy, and by providing a platform for Wyler to continue propagating the myths about its potential, NPR is contributing to a culture of harm.... While ex-gays like Wyler are certainly entitled to believe what they will about their identities, NPR has no obligation to highlight their harmful, anti-scientific, and anti-gay views as having any merit. The responsible journalist would have done the opposite."
Religion Dispatches:
"While the NPR piece does have moments of clarity, to call it balanced is a bit of a stretch. First, the reporter never tells us exactly who Rich Wyler is -- the founder of an 'ex-gay' ministry, People Can Change, whose practices, writes Warren Throckmorton, are even marginalized among the 'ex-gay' industry.... The shame should lie not with gay and lesbian people, but with a church, and an 'ex-gay' industry peopled by professional 'ex-gays,' that continues to repeat the lie no matter how many lives are ruined by it. Shame on NPR for letting that lie travel on its airwaves in some misguided attempt at 'balance.'"
Truth Wins Out:
"What we have on one hand are genuine researchers who believe the issue has long been settled, and on the other hand a politically motivated marketing campaign by the 'ex-gay' industry with the goal of tricking news outlets into thinking a controversy is actually occurring.

"It is depressing that NPR, a top-notch news organization, was so easily hoodwinked and ended up parroting the antigay party line. I can only imagine the exuberant high fives at the headquarters of the "ex-gay" group People Can Change when they realized that NPR had bought their baloney."
Take Action:
  • Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck's radio show and his quest spots on Fox News. Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights. Update: Boycott Successful: Update 4/7/2011: Beck has been fired by FOX NEWS! Radio stations dropping Beck as well in several locations. Now, tell FOX to stop having Beck as a Guest.
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! Boycott Fox's Owner "Rupert Murcoch" and get him thrown in jail for illegal - political donations, corruption, greed, bribery, hacking!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

Bachmanns Proudly Attend Antigay Sermon
NBC News reports that Michele Bachmann and her husband joined in yet another antigay moment this weekend during a visit to an Iowa church, which featured testimony from a man claiming he's no longer gay.

By Lucas Grindley - Advocate - Aug 8, 2011

Michele Bachmann and her husband joined in yet another antigay moment this weekend during a visit to an Iowa church, which featured testimony from a man claiming he's no longer gay.

NBC News reports that the Bachmanns attended Point of Grace Church near Des Moines, and as Pastor Jeff Mullen stood next to the GOP presidential candidate onstage, he raised her personal Bible in his hand as a symbol to the congregation of her Christian devotion. Then Mullen delivered a sermon about the supposedly "immoral" and "unnatural" sin of homosexuality.

"We inherently know that homosexual behavior is immoral and unnatural," Mullen said, according to NBC.

Before it was all over, and Bachmann was seen posing for photos with the pastor, he shared a videotaped testimonial from Adam Hood, who says he's no longer gay.

"I am so happy God has given me natural affection for a woman," Hood said in the recording.

Both Bachmanns have repeatedly made supportive statements about so-called reparative therapy, even recommending a book written by a woman who claims she is no longer a lesbian. Marcus Bachmann's Christian counseling clinics were the subject of a recent hidden-camera investigation that found therapists claiming it's possible to stop being gay. But the candidate has refused to answer any questions about the business, about the dangers of reparative therapy, or about the string of teen suicides in her congressional district.

NBC News contacted the Bachmann campaign, which made no apparent effort to distance itself from what was preached from the pulpit Sunday. Instead, a statement from the Minnesota congresswoman's campaign said, "She always welcomes the opportunity to meet with parishioners."
