GeoVax Receives Latest Tranche of $19.6M NIAID Funding for HIV Vaccine

$3.6 million will be used for production of GM-CSF adjuvanted vaccine projected to start in clinical trials within six months.

GeoVax Labs has received the latest $3.6 million tranche of a (to date) $19.6 million Integrated Preclinical/Clinical AIDS Vaccine Development (IPCAVD) grant awarded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, to support the firm's HIV/AIDS vaccine program. The latest annual award is GeoVax' fifth (the grant was first approved in 2007), and will be used for production of a GM-CSF adjuvanted vaccine for human clinical trials that are projected to start in the next six months.

GeoVax' HIV vaccines are designed to express virus-like particles that display the trimeric membrane-bound form of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein. Phase I clinical trials have been completed with various combinations and doses of nonadjuvanted DNA and modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) vaccines, including their ability to raise anti-HIV humoral and cellular immune responses, as well as safety. A Phase II preventive study was initiated in January 2009 and will involve 300 participants at sites in the U.S. and South America. GeoVax recently began enrolling patients in a Phase I therapeutic trial for individuals already infected with HIV. The clinical program is being carried out in collaboration with the NIAID and the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN). 

In April the firm announced expanding its preventive HIV/AIDS vaccine program to test an additional vaccine product that expresses human GM-CSF in combination with noninfectious HIV virus-like particles. The vaccination protocol using this GM-CSF candidate will involve a priming vaccination using the DNA vaccine, followed by a booster vaccination comprising a recombinant MVA vectored vaccine. The MVA expresses the HIV virus-like-particles but doesn't express GM-CSF, GeoVax explains. The regimen builds on the GeoVax DNA/MVA vaccine that is currently in Phase IIa clinical testing through the HVTN.

"This award will allow us to maintain momentum on the successful development of our GM-CSF adjuvanted vaccine," comments Harriet Robinson, Ph.D., CSO at GeoVax and program director for the NIAID award. "The exciting thing about using the GM-CSF adjuvant is that it significantly increases prevention of infection. Without the adjuvant, our vaccine has been demonstrated to successfully control infection, but prevention of infection is the ultimate goal."

In December 2010 GeoVax reported early data from the ongoing Phase IIa study, which is evaluating two recombinant DNA-vectored vaccine inoculations: the first administered at week 0 and the second at week eight, followed by two recombinant MVA-vectored vaccine inoculations at weeks 16 and 24. Data from 180 patients highlighted no safety concerns, and data on vaccine-induced T cell responses from 128 patients showed similar to those observed in the Phase I trial. At the time these early results were reported, GeoVax said additional testing was ongoing to measure antibody responses and to further characterize cellular immune responses.

ACLU Sues Missouri School District, Alleges Illegal Censorship Of LGBT Websites

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against a Missouri school district for using software that filters websites advocating for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

ACLU filed suit against the Camdenton R-III School District on behalf of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays National, the Matthew Shepard Foundation, Campus Pride and DignityUSA. ACLU argues that the school district ignored warnings from the organization as part of its "Don't Filter Me" project that its Internet filtering practices were unconstitutional.

The 36-page complaint filed Monday notes that Camdenton's software blocks sites like ones belonging to the plaintiff organizations, which provide information for preventing anti-gay bullying and other student resources like access to gay-straight alliances. But at the same time, the district's censorship doesn't cut off access to comparable anti-LGBT sites, ACLU says.

"We have made every effort to inform the school district that its filtering software illegally denies students access to important educational information and resources on discriminatory grounds," Tony Rothert, legal director of the ACLU of Eastern Missouri said in a statement Monday. "Unfortunately, it will now be up to the courts to compel the district to grant its students viewpoint-neutral access to the Internet."

The lawsuit seeks, among several items, to uproot the district's use of the current filtering software and relief from nominal damages for constitutional rights violation.

Blocking sites that advocate for the LGBT community makes it more difficult for students to complete assignments about current events and hinders LGBT students' abilities to access information that could help them "with the difficult issues of coming out to family members, integrating their sexuality and religious faith, dealing with the threat of bullying, and surviving high school as an LGBT person," according to the complaint.

ACLU says that Camdenton's custom-built filtering software has a "viewpoint-neutral" URL Blacklist that blocks sexually explicit sites, but also has a "viewpoint-discriminatory" category titled "sexuality" that also blacklists non-sexually explicit LGBT pages, but permits access to anti-LGBT sites.

URL Blacklist automatically generates an aggregate of URLs that are available on the web. From URL Blacklist:
The blacklist does not only contain sites that are considered 'bad' but it also contains many other categories that can be used as white or grey lists. Being listed does not infer that the site is 'bad' - these are just lists of sites ... The blacklist does contain sites which are wrongly categorised which is due to the bulk of the entries being collected using automatic scripts.
According to the complaint filed Monday, Rothert wrote a letter to district officials in May requesting that Camdenton lift its sexuality filter or switch to a new Internet filtering software, noting that the current filtering is a violation of the First Amendment. Officials first denied using URL Blacklist as its filtering software, but later admitted its employment and agreed to unblock specific sites noted in Rothert's letter, but declined to lift the entire "sexuality" category ban, according to the document filed Monday.

Last Friday, Camdenton Superintendent Tim Hadfield told Lake News Online that the district will not change how it filters sexually explicit websites despite ACLU's initial complaint, noting that district officials do not believe its filtering practices violate student rights. ACLU has incorrect information, Hadfield told Lake News Online.

The superintendent added that the district will make exceptions for students who request to access automatically filtered sites, provided the content on those pages comply with district policies.

"We do not specifically filter sites promoting alternative lifestyles. We do specifically block sites that are inappropriate and will continue to do so," Hadfield told Lake News Online. "We disagree with their position and turned the issue over to our attorney to address."

ACLU's "Don't Filter Me" campaign stemmed from a growing wave of complaints across the country that schools were filtering LGBT sites -- after ACLU convinced two Tennessee school districts through legal action to discontinue LGBT site filtering, the Associated Press reports.

This lawsuit comes as the state caught attention for another controversial Internet-related decision, when Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon signed into law a ban on teachers friend students on Facebook last month. Legislators pushed for the move to protect students, while teachers argued that the legislation limits education and intellectual dialogue.

Most prominently, Minnesota's Anoka-Hennepin School District was hit last week with a lawsuit from a sixth student alleging that officials failed to intervene in anti-gay bullying, in which several cases led to a series of student suicides.
