Health - Wellness - Exercise - Reflections:
Americans think the body mass index can tell them if they're at a healthy weight. But they're wrong

By Adam Eaglin, October 19, 2010 - Men's Health

next time you happen to catch a Minnesota Vikings game, take a look at Adrian Peterson, the team's 6'1, 217-pound running back. Now ask yourself: what kind of physical characteristics would you attribute to him? Athletic? Lean? Fit? All of these certainly sound like valid answers to us--but his clinical classification might surprise you.

By any normal standards, Peterson is one of the fittest men on the planet. But by our country's system of measuring body fat, he's overweight. If you're like most people, you've probably heard of the 'body mass index,' or, as it's more informally known, BMI. It's a popular formula used to not only gauge if a person is overweight or obese, but also how great their risk is for future health problems.

BMI is a relatively straightforward equation that measures a person's body fat by comparing their weight to their height:

(Weight in pounds) / (Height in inches) (Height in inches) x 703

You can also figure out your BMI without doing any math, here: Log onto http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ for an online calculator.

There are four different categories a person can fall into, ranging from underweight to obese. They are:

*18.4 or lower: Underweight.
*18.5 to 24.9: Normal weight.
*25 to 29.9: Overweight.
*30 or higher: Obese.

According to the National Institutes of Health, being overweight or obese by this measure can put you at risk for heart disease, type II diabetes, and even some cancers.
But BMI doesn't work well for individual people. One of the formula's obvious flaws, explains Alan Aragon, the Men's Health Weight Loss Coach and a nutritionist in California, is that it has no way of discriminating between fat and muscle--which is the case with Peterson.

Part of the problem is that BMI was never designed as a tool for judging any individual person's weight--either by physicians or the general public, says Timothy Church, a professor of health at Pennington Biomedical Research Center. In fact, the formula was originally intended to measure the collective weight of an entire population, but because of its straightforward math and distinctive categories (i.e., if you score a 25 on the BMI scale, you're overweight), it soon also took off.

Here's how BMI was born: In the early part of the 20th century, medical studies began to show a link between excess weight and an early death. So doctors and insurance companies started to seek out an easy method to determine a person's body-fat percentage. Insurance companies were especially concerned with this task, and devoted portions of their budget to discovering an obesity-determining calculation.

It wasn't, however, until physiology researcher Ancel Keys published a study in 1972 called "Indices of Relative Weight and Obesity," that the modern version of BMI came about. Keys conducted a series of studies on male populations in order to test if any pre-existing mathematical equations could measure a group's relative amount of body-fat. Fortunately for him, one did. The "Quetelet Index," (a.k.a., weight divided by height, squared) which was developed by Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet in the mid-1800s, proved to be successful.

To Keys' credit, he never intended for physicians or insurance companies to use this equation--but BMI was just too perfect. Because it was simply a math equation, it was quicker, easier, and cheaper to use than more direct and accurate measures--like the underwater weighing test, which measures how much you weigh by how much water you displace, and the skin fold measurements, which calculates how much fat you have beneath your skin.

"BMI was really pushed by [companies like] Metropolitan Life," Church said. "It was meant to give them an excuse to charge [their clients] more."

The formula received its official stamp of approval in 1985, when the NIH cited it as the index of obesity, Ever since then, BMI has gradually become more and more accepted--now it's the standard, go-to formula for determining what makes a healthy weight, even among regular people, says Frank Hu, Ph.D., professor of health and nutrition at the Harvard School for Public Health.

Another issue is gender. The Quetelet Index—and corresponding Keys study--were both created from research on male populations. An entirely different formula was originally used for determining obesity in female populations, and yet, doctors use the same equation for both genders, says Church. In the beginning, the NIH differentiated between men and women by establishing different "thresholds" for one's BMI, to account for the variance between men and women in the equation. But even that difference dissolved in 1998. When pressed for the reasons why, an NIH spokesperson declined to comment.

So why has no one tried to change the system? One reason is that imprecise numbers from BMI aren't dangerous, says Hu. And besides, doctors are able to determine risk factors using other measurements.

Still, the alternatives to BMI aren't perfect either. The most common of which is the waist circumference test, which measures abdominal obesity (a.k.a., the fat around your stomach). It's slightly better than BMI at measuring someone's risk for illnesses like heart disease and diabetes, say our experts, because it measures fat specifically, instead of taking into account the weight of a person's muscle mass.

The truth is, people know if they're overweight--so be your own judge. Look in the mirror, monitor your jean size, and talk to your doctor. But don't rely on a flawed formula to determine your health status.
Take Action:
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! In conclusion, O'Reilly expressed out-right Hatrad of the LGBT Community.
  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people. Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays!
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating over 1 mIllion dollars to anti-gay marriage groups + serious history of employment discrimination of LGBT community.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC renew the clown's show after he pulled all such low-class shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Dump NBC because they re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! NBC, Really? Update June 1, 2011: Trump now claims that Obama's long form, original birth certificate is fake. And NBC keeps this hater? NBC, You Kidding Us?

For Rent, Unless You're Gay - or a Single Mom
By Diane Anderson-Minshall - August 26, 2011 - Advocate

A surprising new study by the University of British Columbia has discovered that gay male couples and single parents face significant discrimination in Vancouver's rental housing market, compared to straight couples.

The research, published in the August issue of the journal Social Problems, is the largest investigation of housing discrimination against single parents. Overall, the study found that male couples are nearly 25% more likely to be rejected by landlords, while single parents are approximately 15% more likely to be rejected.

"Vancouver has a reputation for tolerance of diversity in North America and a vibrant gay community," says lead author Nathanael Lauster, a professor in UBC's department of sociology. "This means that housing discrimination levels may even be higher in other cities."

Lauster says researchers analyzed nearly 1,700 online rental inquiries in metro Vancouver, one of Canada's largest and most culturally diverse cities, which also boasts strong housing laws to protect against discrimination. They discovered that discrimation varied significantly by neighborhood.

For example, communities with greater numbers of single-parent families exhibited increased levels of discrimination against single parents. The opposite was true, however, in neighborhoods with large gay populations -- such as Vancouver's West End and West Side -- which exhibited significantly lower levels of discrimination against male couples.

"This suggests that the bases for discrimination against same-sex couples and single parents may differ," says Lauster. "For gay couples, the discrimination is likely based in ignorance or moral objections that lessen with contact. For single parents, the discrimination may be based more on their real economic marginalization."

Inquiries were identical except for minor variations by five family types: heterosexual couple, male couple, female couple, single mother with child, and single father with child. The study found no significant differences in landlord responses to female couples compared to straight couples. According to recent census figures, Vancouver has more than 4,700 same-sex couples, about 10% of all same-sex couples in Canada.

Lesbian Labeled a "Sinner," Removed From Son's Boy Scout Troop
By Winston Gieseke - Advocate - Aug 26, 2011

A Virginia woman has been removed from a leadership position in her son's Boy Scout troop after six years of service -- all because she's a lesbian.

Denise Steele and Jackie Funk have been together for 19 years and are raising their two children Jackson, 12, and Jaden, 9, along with Steele's nephew Will, 10, in the town of Potomac Falls.

According to the  Loudoun Times-Mirror, Steele became a den leader for Jackson's troop six years ago when no other parent volunteered for the position, and with her help the group "excelled at everything, including accomplishing badges and winning the Blue and Gold Award all five years, one of the highest awards for Boy Scouts."

According to her partner, Steele enjoyed her work with the Scouts. Not only did she quickly reach her goal of becoming an assistant scout leader -- training generally takes a year, but Steele completed it in less than a month -- she says she offered full disclosure, informing scoutmaster Mike Tucker of her nearly two-decade relationship with Funk. He told her there was no problem.

But in June the devoted leader was removed from the troop after an assistant scoutmaster, Skip Inabinett, learned of her relationship with Funk.

Inabinett reportedly sent an email to a friend of Steele's asking her to approach Steele about stepping down. "As her friend, this may be an opportunity for you to share with her about Christ's love and the need to believe that as sinners we cannot get to heaven on our own and that we need a savior," he wrote.

In a situation Funk labeled "bullying," Inabinett also exchanged emails with Steele, many of which reduced her to tears.

Then, according to Steele and Funk, Inabinett skipped the normal protocol of speaking to the committee and the district, choosing instead to go directly to the top and asking the Boy Scouts of America to remove Steele from her position.

They did.

Since "open homosexuality" is considered "inconsistent with the values" of the Boy Scouts of America organization, a representative from the troop's charter organization -- the relatively conservative Christian Fellowship Church -- said Steele's removal was a matter of following the rules. "We are simply doing what we agreed to do in our charter," said Esther Schaeffer.

Steele's friend Eric Ianson, an Eagle Scout himself, disagreed with the ruling "I think it's disappointing -- it's a sad day for Boy Scouting. I think the actions are really out of sync of what scouting stands for," he said.
