AIDS: Black Gay Men's Caucus responds to rise in AIDS cases in young men

In response to alarming new data that reveals young Black men who have sex with men are significantly more likely to contract HIV than their peers, the Chicago Black Gay Men's Caucus ( CBGMC ) hosted "Conversations: A Discussion on the National HIV/AIDS Strategy and the impact for Black Gay/Bisexual Men in Chicago" Aug. 11.

On Aug. 3, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control announced that HIV cases among young Black men ( ages 13-29 ) who have sex with men rose by 48 percent between 2006 and 2009. Similarly, records from the Chicago Department of Public Health indicate new HIV cases among young gay Black men ( 13-29 ) in Chicago rose by 62 percent between 2005 and 2008.

"At a time where we've seen advances in scientific technology that help to reduce both the spread and the mortality of HIV, we are still seeing Black men who have sex with men become infected and die more than our white and Latino counterparts," said Keith Green, director of federal affairs at the AIDS Foundation of Chicago ( AFC ) and co-chair of the CBGMC.

As the sun began to set on a beautiful Thursday night, a group of about 75 health professionals, city officials, school teachers and activists gathered in a spacious meeting room in the Gary Comer Youth Center on Chicago's South Side.

While attendees enjoyed a complimentary dinner, Dr. John Schneider, assistant professor of medicine and epidemiology at the University of Chicago, articulated factors that could be contributing to the high rates. Chief among them: unemployment, substance use, poor sex education, mental health issues and a lack of accessible care.

"We don't have really good services on the South Side for anal and penile care," Schneider said. "We need to have providers make those services available ,,, and train the front staff to be culturally competent and know how to engage somebody who may be very sensitive about either their appearance or their HIV status."

Schneider stressed the need for stable youth centers like Gary Comer and said that while many community groups do good work, funding is always a concern. "Howard Brown can have a problem," he said, "and all the donors step up and fund them. If a small group on the South Side has a problem, they lose their funding and they're gone."

He noted that when youth use alcohol or drugs before sex, they're significantly less likely to use condoms, and that social use of marijuana is common. Through his clinic work on the South Side, Schneider said he's seen many young adults who have very poor grasps of basic sex and health functions.

"What's tragic is that sex education in Chicago public schools has been left up to teachers," he said. "There's no standard procedure. You know, if I can fit it into my math class--eight condoms plus six condoms equals 14 condoms--that's my sex education. There really needs to be good sex education and HIV prevention education."

Another common problem: Many HIV-positive men don't take their medications as prescribed. Some feel they're young and invincible; some don't want to deal with a daily reminder of the disease; others lack access; and still others simply slack off.

"We really need to get people who are infected and have virus in their body on medicine," Schneider said. "Fundamentally, that's it."

After Schneider's presentation, the audience broke into four small focus groups, each of which contained at least one city health official or doctor—including Chris Brown, assistant commissioner of Public Health for the STI/HIV/AIDS Division of the city of Chicago, and Mildred Williamson, PhD, MSW, HIV/AIDS section chief at the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The groups proceeded to draft lists of suggestions that could help community leaders, healthcare providers and city officials stem the growing epidemic. Working to reduce homophobia in Black communities was a common concern; many said churches needed to be more accepting and social media could be used to spread positive messaging.

Funding was another heavy-hitter. Some group members wondered how they could procure more funding as cuts were being made all around them. Others complained that current funding channels and grant application processes restricted creativity.

"We don't have the collaboration we need," said Veronica Brown, who works in the governor's office. "Most entities are working as an island by themselves for fear that a move of clients means a shift in funds. And so our funds make everybody not work as a group to meet the needs of a person. … We need to stop. It needs to be about addressing the issue and not the money."

To address the dearth of comprehensive sex education in schools, one group advocated launching a Chicago condom campaign similar to the one in New York City, which ran with the slogan "We've got you covered."

Dozens of suggestions were offered during the three-hour event, and city officials eagerly jotted down notes. Brown said he would create a citizen-based commission to continue generating ideas and welcomed people to call him at the Chicago Department of Public Health to join.

David Robertson, 27, a prevention specialist at the Comer Children's Hospital at the University of Chicago, said he loved the ideas he heard but thought the event was flawed. Though it aimed to address a problem faced by young Black queer men aged 13-29, very few were in the audience.

"I'm disappointed," Robertson said. He stressed that if youth were brought into the discussion and treated as equals, then "we wouldn't have all these attitudes, arguments, debates. This in here is an implosion. There's an explosion going on outside. [ Youth ] should be in here. Period."

"There's no faith in my generation," he continued. "We have innovative ways, we have a connection. Have a little faith. … We're not going to steer you wrong. We want to make sure [ these young people ] are going to be our doctors to take care of us. We want to help them, trust me."

Green announced that the CBGMC would hold a second event that focused exclusively on fostering youth voices and creating youth-led solutions. No date has been set.

Boycott Fox's Owner "Rupert Murcoch" and get him thrown in jail for illegal - political donations, corruption, greed, bribery, hacking!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

New York Advocates Ready For National Same-Sex Marriage Push

Fresh off their victory in Albany, New York's same-sex marriage advocates are now aiming to take the cause nationwide by repealing the federal law that allows states to ignore gay and lesbian marriages performed elsewhere.

Rep. Jerry Nadler sees support building in Congress to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act, two years after he introduced a bill to do so. It finally has a Senate sponsor in California's Dianne Feinstein - and he expects it to pass the House whenever Democrats reclaim the majority there.
 
"I would be very skeptical that the Republican leadership would allow a vote in this session of Congress, or even a hearing," Nadler said. "For now, we are just pushing on to get Republican co-sponsors and more Democratic co-sponsors, to make the issue, to push it in the Senate, and get enough momentum so that as soon as the House becomes Democratic again, we can pass the bill."

Nadler added the 121st sponsor to his Respect for Marriage Act last week, Democratic Rep. Jim Langevin of Rhode Island, and said a handful of House Republicans are close to signing onto the bill -- even though that party's presidential candidates show little sympathy for same-sex marriage.

"Did you see the Republican debate?" Nadler asked. "You saw a number of the candidates competing as to who's worse on the question."

Yet New York's example could help pave the way for recognizing same-sex marriages in other states, Nadler said, as gay couples from those places come to New York to get married.

"They will be at home back in Minnesota or Wyoming or whatever, and fairly rapidly people are going to get much more used to the idea," he said. "The biggest opposition we have is inchoate fear."

Nadler and state Sen. Daniel Squadron are sponsoring a forum for New York politicians today called "After 'I Do' " to highlight the inequities that remain for same-sex couples after they won the right to marry - and the lack of federal recognition is at the top of the list.

"Governor Cuomo spoke eloquently about that throughout the session," said Squadron. "Doing this in New York was very meaningful for new Yorkers, but also a meaningful message to the nation."

A gaggle of electeds is expected to attend, including U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, several members of Congress, City Council members, borough presidents and Assembly members. The forum is open to the public too.

The panel will feature Empire State Pride Agenda President Ross Levi; Tom Ude of Lambda Legal, Melissa Goodman from the New York Civil Liberties Union; Pedro Serrano from the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force; and Everett Lo from the Social Security Administration.

Nadler credited Gov. Andrew Cuomo with providing the political leadership to pass same-sex marriage in New York, but said President Barack Obama is clearly more ambivalent.

"The president hasn't really pushed this at all," Nadler said.  "He finally endorsed the bill a few weeks ago. But when we got to the point where we have a real shot at it, then I would hope the president would push it."
