Dieters, or people trying not to think about food, are 30% more likely to give into impulses at the grocery store, according to 2008 University of Minnesota research.

Their theory: Concentrating all that willpower on not eating leaves you vulnerable to impulse buys and, subsequently, food splurges.

The fix: To keep from binging in the checkout line, shop for groceries early in the day, advises lead researcher, Kathleen Vohs, Ph.D., professor of consumer psychology at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.

Your self-control will be stronger and fresher because it hasn't been tested that day. Still, have an "if/then" plan for making healthier choices when cravings hit.

"If you're hungry or fixated on food while shopping, [tell yourself that] you'll grab a piece of fruit, a handful of protein-packed almonds or a similar low-calorie snack," Vohs says.

A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people. Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays!
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating over 1 mIllion dollars to anti-gay marriage groups + serious history of employment discrimination of LGBT community.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC renew the clown's show after he pulled all such low-class shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Dump NBC because they re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! NBC, Really? Update June 1, 2011: Trump now claims that Obama's long form, original birth certificate is fake. And NBC keeps this hater? NBC, You Kidding Us?

35th Annual Gay Softball World Series Kicks Off In Chicago

More than 3,000 softball players have descended upon Chicago this week from all over the continent for the for the 35th Annual North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance Gay Softball World Series, which starts tournament play Tuesday and runs through Sunday.

"No matter what community you're representing, straight gay or whatever, hosting events like this is about so much more than that basic underlying athletic part of it," said Ted Cappas, president of Series 2011 Chicago, the nonprofit organization that has spent the last two years planning the event. "It's about competition and community and in our case, the LGBT community."

This year marks the first time since 1983 that Chicago has hosted the Gay Softball World Series, and organizers say it has grown tremendously since then. According to Aaron Brost, director of marketing and ceremonies for the event, Chicago's 1983 Gay Softball World Series, had just one division with 14 teams. This week, 150 teams from 41 North American cities are expected to participate.

Cappas, who credits the organizers of the 1970s and 80s for creating a tournament that's been sustainable, said that this year's World Series comes at a time when "Chicago, the community, is much more accepting of gays and lesbians." Softball, he added, has had such staying power among gay athletes not only because of its camaraderie but also because people tend to continue playing as they grow older.

At the World Series, play is split into five divisions: A, B, C, and D, with A being the most advanced skill level, as well as a masters division for those ages 50 and older.

To host the tournament, Series 2011 Chicago has raised more than $220,000 in private and corporate donations, and organizers estimate that the city will see $5 to $6 million in economic impact because of the event. Cappas and his seven fellow Series board members are also aiming to raise about $50,000 for local and national charities, like the Broadway Youth Center and the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation, which is dedicated to anti-bullying.

In between Monday and the weekend, the core of the Series -- the softball games -- will take place in Elmhurst, Schaumburg and St. Charles. Brost called the suburban softball fields "just exceptional" and said they will meet tournament regulations better than those owned by the Chicago Park District.

Playing on those suburban fields will be teams ranging from those who are just out there to win to more social teams to those who combine both, like the pink- and blue-clad Shady Ladies, who were also last year's Division C champions.

"I think because people feel so empowered to be themselves, sometimes you do see characters who aren't afraid to really dress it up with a fun uniform or a big cheering team," Brost said. "They're like, 'This is what we do and who we are.'"

Brost, 37, of Lincoln Park, as well as Cappas, 39, of Andersonville, will be playing for a division B team in the World Series called Downtown Bar and Lounge, which is sponsoring the team. Brost said that initially, being a part of a gay softball team gave him a comfortable environment to ease into both a new social scene and into team sports after moving to the city from the suburbs.

"I personally didn't feel comfortable participating on sports teams -- maybe I was feeling I would be made fun of," he said. "Now I actually feel empowered to be an athlete."

It shows, as games among upper division teams can get extremely heated.

Matt Bauman, 24, said that his team, the Orlando Broadway Crush, nabbed third and second in its division the last couple of years, meaning that this year, "if we don't win, I know personally, I will disappointed."

Bauman, a former college baseball player, is so committed to his teammates that he flew back and forth from Nashville, where he lives, to Florida to play with the Crush as they qualified for the World Series, which will be Bauman's second.

"As long as this team exists, I will not play for another team," he said. "They would do anything for me, and I would do anything for them. The bond we have with this team and the friendship made with these guys, we'll cherish when we're way too old to play softball."

Apart from the actual softball games, which are free and open to the public, the Gay Softball World Series includes a street fair in Boystown. Tournament winners will also be recognized on the field during for Pride Day at Wrigley during Sunday's Chicago Cubs game.
