Health - Wellness - Exercise - Reflections:
Double Up and Get Fitter, Faster

By Jennifer Gruenemay, ACE-Certified, September 30, 2011

Do more! Why waste your time at the gym doing everything one by one when you can combine two or three different exercises at once? Think about it – you stand with your feet hip-width apart and perform three sets of hammer curls. What good does it do your lower body or core to just stand there? Something as simple as standing on one leg while performing arm exercises kicks your workout up a notch by working stabilizer muscles in your core and legs.

You can also combine an arm exercise (like a biceps curl) with a leg exercise (like a lunge) and finish it off with either one additional arm movement (like an overhead press) or another leg movement (like a standing hamstring curl).

Sound complicated? Try it sans weights first, then add weights once you're comfortable with this multi-tasking movement. While it definitely takes a little bit of coordination to do more than one thing at a time, with a little practice you can easily trim valuable time off of your gym sessions. And the end result will be a fitter you, faster!
Take Action:
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! Boycott Fox's Owner "Rupert Murcoch" and get him thrown in jail for illegal - political donations, corruption, greed, bribery, hacking!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI feels that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! "Georgia Executes Innocent People!"

Data On Same-Sex Couples Reveal Changing Attitudes
by Corey Dade - Sep 30, 2011 - NPR

As bans on gay marriage and civil unions spread across the majority of America in the past decade, new U.S. Census figures reveal a starkly different trend: The number of same-sex partnerships skyrocketed even in the most prohibitive states.

Some 646,464 gay couples said they lived together in last year's census, an increase of 80 percent from 2000, according to revised figures released this week. Same-sex couples make up just 1 percent of all married and unmarried couples in the U.S., but as a group they nonetheless made large gains in every state.

The results include the first estimate of the nation's gay married couples. More than 131,000 same-sex couples identified themselves as husbands or wives, accounting for about 1 in every 5 gay couples who live together.

But the new numbers may not represent a real increase in gay couples as much as a change in attitudes. Some demographers say the stigma of homosexuality is easing, emboldening more people to disclose their same-sex partnerships. As evidence, some of the biggest increases in gay couples occurred in unlikely places.

"I think it tells us how same-sex couples view their relationships, as apart from the legal definition. Many of them view themselves as spouses but live in states that don't recognize them in any way," says demographer Gary Gates at the UCLA law school's Williams Institute, which analyzes census data on gay and lesbian couples.

Gates, one of the demographers asked to confirm the data's accuracy for the Census Bureau, points to his own post-census survey that indicated increasing openness among gays and lesbians. His report found that 10 percent of same-sex couples declined to reveal their relationship to census takers, down from 20 percent in 2000.

The census data provided plenty of room for interpretation among those on both sides of the debate over marriage rights for gays and lesbians.

"It shows an exponential increase in the number of same-sex couples that are standing up and being counted," Brian Moulton, chief legislative counsel for the gay-rights group Human Rights Campaign, says. "It continues to demonstrate to policymakers, in particular, that their families are out there, they do exist and need protection."

However, opponents say the small number of married same-sex couples fails to justify advocates' call for marriage rights.

"This shows that most same-sex couples living together don't choose to marry," says Peter Sprigg, a senior fellow for policy studies at the Family Research Council, a conservative group that opposes same-sex marriages and civil unions. "That suggests to me that the majority of homosexuals aren't really interested in participating in the institution of marriage, which calls into the place the whole movement for same-sex marriage, in my mind."

While same-sex partnerships remained most heavily concentrated in the socially liberal areas of the Northeast and the West, many states in the South and Midwest with the most restrictive gay-marriage laws recorded big jumps in same-sex households.

Among the 10 states with the largest increases in same-sex couples, six of the states have laws or constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage and civil unions.

The largest population of same-sex couples resides in California, where a voter-approved ban on gay marriage is being challenged in federal court. The number of same-sex households there increased by 46 percent to more than 98,000 since 2000. The state briefly granted marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2008 before voters passed Proposition 8, which defined marriage as being between one man and one woman. (California recognizes same-sex marriages and civil unions granted in other states.)

Florida and Texas, respectively, recorded the second- and third-largest numbers of gay couples. Both states have constitutional amendments restricting marriage to a man and a woman. Florida's total rose to 48,496 and Texas's jumped to 46,401, with the groups in each state posting an increase of more than 85 percent over the decade.

Socially and religiously conservative North Carolina and Georgia were among the states with not only the greatest increases but the largest populations of same-sex households.

The number of North Carolina's gay couples soared 118 percent to 18,309, as the state earlier this month approved a ballot initiative for 2012, which aims to prevent constitutional challenges to existing law that already prohibits same-sex marriage.

Georgia had the sixth-highest number of gay couples, at 21,318, due to an 80 percent increase over the decade. Georgia voters approved a constitutional ban in 2004, following one of the nation's most widely watched demonstrations in support of it — notably because one of its leaders was the Rev. Bernice King, a daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. Her mother, civil rights activist Coretta Scott King, had been a public supporter of gay rights.

The Census Bureau issued the figures this week to correct its initial release in August, when it put the number of same-sex households at more than 901,000. The initial results also produced a far higher estimate of gay married couples, at a count of more than 349,000.

The bureau says the results were "artificially inflated" because some heterosexual couples checked boxes on the 2010 census form identifying themselves as same-sex couples. The bureau attributes the error to a poorly designed questionnaire that census takers used in recording people's information on door-to-door visits. Some demographers say the form may have produced similar mistakes in the 2000 count.

In all, 29 states have amended their constitutions to effectively outlaw gay marriage by defining marriage as being between a man and a woman. Twelve other states have laws against recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states.

Roughly 19 states have laws against recognizing same-sex civil unions.

At the opposite end of the issue, six states and the District of Columbia have legalized same-sex marriage. Massachusetts was the first state to do so, in 2004. New York became the latest earlier this year.

OCCUPY WALL STREET [Update]:

AFL-CIO's Trumka Hails Occupy Wall Street
John Nicholson September 30, 2011 - The Nation

Declaring that "Wall Street's out of control," AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka has embraced street protests such as the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstrations -- and others like them that are planned for cities across the country.

Asked about the ongoing mass protest in New York's financial district, which has begun to gain support from major unions, Trumka said Friday morning: "I think it's a tactic and a valid tactic to call attention to a problem. Wall Street is out of control. We have three imbalances in this country -- the imbalance between imports and exports, the imbalance between employer power and working power, and the imbalance between the real economy and the financial economy. We need to bring back balance to the financial economy, and calling attention to it and peacefully protesting is a very legitimate way of doing it."

Hailing the power of street protests to shift the dialogue, Trumka said, "I think being in the streets and calling attention to issues is sometimes the only recourse you have because, God only knows, you can go to the Hill, and you can talk to a lot of people and see nothing ever happen..."

Organized largely by young people and initially neglected by much of the media and major political players, the "Occupy Wall Street" protest has begun to attract global attention, as prominent figures such as filmmaker Michael Moore and Dr. Cornel West have joined the hundreds of demonstrators who have maintained a steady presence since thousands of anti-corporate activists massed on September 17.

Trumka's remarks came as key union locals began to endorse the "Occupy Wall Street" protests, which have gained increasing attention over the past two weeks. Transport Workers Union Local 100, which represents 38,000 New York City transit workers (and 26,000 retirees), endorsed the protests Wednesday, with a statement that read:

"The Transport Workers Union Local 100 applauds the courage of the young people on Wall Street who are dramatically demonstrating for what our position has been for some time: the shared sacrifice preached by government officials looks awfully like a one-way street. Workers and ordinary citizens are putting up all the sacrifice, and the financiers who imploded our economy are getting away scot-free, increasing their holdings and bonuses.

"Young people face a bleak future with high unemployment, and minimum wage jobs. Public sector workers face Mayors and Governors who demand massive wage and benefits givebacks or face thousands of layoffs. That's not bargaining. That's blackmail.

"One out of six Americans lives in poverty today, and the richest one percent control more wealth than at any time since the Gilded Age of the 1920's."

Local 100 spokesman Jim Gannon said: "These young folks are out there and they're singing our tune, and they're saying what we've been saying for quite some time that the so-called shared sacrifice is a one way street. Young people face high unemployment, it's very difficult to get jobs and in many ways they're in the same boat as public sector workers are. So we all get together and who knows, this might become a movement."

Gannon linked the Wall Street protests of recent weeks with the protests earlier this year in Madison, Wisconsin, where Republican Governor Scott Walker attacked collective-bargaining rights for public employees.

"In Madison they were fighting for themselves but they weren't only fighting for themselves. It hit a chord with a lot of people across the country, not just union workers," explained Gannon. "And I think [Occupy Wall Street] is starting to hit a real chord, especially with blue collar workers."

Trumka, who marched in Madison in February, sounded a similar theme Friday.

"Our international unions are involved, our locals are involved, and you'll see a lot of working people" Trumka said of protests against Wall Street abuses. "You'll see a lot of small business people. You'll see a lot of manufacturing people who actually produce in this country (and) are being stepped on the same way by multinationals in Wall Street."

During discussion of unemployment and economic issues at the Brookings Institute, Trumka was asked about the "Occupy Wall Street" protests by Paul Crist, an Americans for Democratic Action board member, who began: "My question actually has to do with the 'Occupy Wall Street' protests that are going on in New York City, and there's been some recent activity where some union locals are kind of becoming involved in that, and i was wondering if you have an opinion on some of the AFL-CIO national member organizations, kind of beginning to take a role in that because i sort of think that that street demonstration activity is sort of forcing dialogue on the issues that you're talking about."

"I happen to agree with you," Trumka responded, as he expressed his own faith in the power of street protests. "God only knows, I've done it thousands of times myself, and may do it again."

He'll have an opportunity to "do it again" on October 5, when a planned march will show solidarity with protests and the broader struggle to hold Wall Street to account. Many unions -- including the United Federation of Teachers; 32BJ SEIU & 1199 SEIU and Workers United -- are expected to join Transport Workers Union Local 100 members in that march, which has also drawn encouragement from the Working Families Party, Moveon.org, Make the Road New York, the Coalition for the Homeless, the Alliance for Quality Education, Community Voices Heard, United New York and Strong Economy For All.
