Re: [Peckers_Pics] Male/Gay Health-Discussion-PICS Gays, lesbians call for Salvation Army boycott

I am so disgusted by people and organizations getting on their f-ing high horses and quoting scripture and religious doctrine to mis-treat, exclude, denigrate, etc. anyone under any conditions. We are all - every one of us - worthy of basic human rights and equal rights and protection under the law. Anyone or any organization who would deny anyone those rights for any reason is bigoted and abusive and unworthy of respect. And they should be "outed" as such - and boycotted and even prosecuted, if that is appropriate.  Its that damn religious zealotry which - again and again - has led to killing, war and large-scale human rights abuses.

There are many local charities and causes that are worth our (and everyones') time, effort and resources )i.e. money) - both at this time and any time of the year. I prefer local charities than large-scale national charities where these issues often arise. I am talking about food pantries or banks, which are in great need of contributions since poverty and homelessness are at record levels and still rising. The need is greater than ever. Another good organization is your local women's shelter who save and care for abused women (and men, in some cases). But there are many others. Seek out those in need in your own community and give of your time and money to help raise up your own community.  Where there is poverty and homelessness, there is need.

One more thing, if it is a big and broad cause to which you would like to provide your money, I would recommend The Point Foundation (pointfoundation.org). Their good works are about financial support, mentoring, leadership training and a whole lot of hope for students who have been marginalized around the country due to their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. This is a growing and very good organization - which is consistently lauded by HRC and local communities where they have literally "saved" many students by providing them with financial support for going to college when their families have either been unwilling or unable to support them.  Each student has a compelling and inspiring story of overcoming incredible obstacles and hardships. Check the site out - I believe in them and the help that they provide our left-out youth. Every student has the right to have he opportunity to make it in this world.

But the point is, check out your local community's need and be there for them during this holiday season and around the year.

And here we go:

According to the Salvation Army's website, "Scripture forbids sexual intimacy between members of the same sex. The Salvation Army believes, therefore, that Christians whose sexual orientation is primarily or exclusively same-sex are called upon to embrace celibacy as a way of life. There is no scriptural support for same-sex unions as equal to, or as an alternative to, heterosexual marriage." Nonetheless, the organization does go on to say that, "Likewise, there is no scriptural support for demeaning or mistreating anyone for reason of his or her sexual orientation. The Salvation Army opposes any such abuse."
