Health, Wellness, Exercise, Reflections:
For Those Who Journal

By John H. Sklare, Ed.D, / January 06, 2012

Happy New Year! Each week in January I'll be addressing three subjects from my Inner Diet program. Each represents the building blocks of a healthier lifestyle, thinner body and happier, more active future. Week 1: Creating a new mindset!

For Those Who Journal

I have a suggestion that will help you deal with adversity better. Since the key to change is awareness, I suggest you try the following awareness activity to see who's in charge of your eating. It's based on a basic concept in learning theory called "transfer." This is where you take some intellectual understanding and put it into practice in the real world.

If you don't already journal, I suggest you consider starting one, because research clearly shows that keeping a journal is common among those who succeed at losing weight and creating healthy lifestyle change. Journaling is also a great way to release feelings and emotions while helping you to become more mindful about what, when and why you eat. And, since one of the keys to successful weight management is to become more of an active participant in this process and less of a passive recipient of information, journaling provides a great way for you to get more actively involved.

With that said, I suggest you create another column in your journal. Or if you don't journal, just keep a piece of paper with you so you can keep track. Every time you put food into your mouth – and I do mean every time – I want you to record either an "A" or a "C" in that new column.Decide, before putting anything into your mouth, who is making this eating decision. Is it the responsible Adult or the irresponsible Child. (Read The Family Feud Conflicts for more on my theory). Then, put an "A" for adult or a "C" for child next to that entry. If you choose not to keep a journal or carry a piece of paper, you can just ask yourself this question prior to eating.

For those of you who keep track, however, you can then tally the A's and C's at the end of each day or the end of each week and get a good idea about where your eating decisions are coming from. The goal then each week is to maximize your A decisions and minimize your C decisions. This will greatly increase your awareness of the choices that you make and throw a spotlight on that "moment" when the decision to eat is made.

It really all comes down to this: There is one incredible moment when the decision to eat is made. If you can manage that moment, you can solve this problem. The purpose of this activity is to throw a spotlight on that moment. This, in turn, takes your mind off auto pilot and allows you to make more "mindful" and less "mindless" eating and health decisions.
Take Action:
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI felt that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. For your safety -Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! "Georgia Executes Innocent People!"

And Now, Our War of the Fittest!

This group is called "Peckers Pics." The English - slang definition of "pecker" is to pluck at the truth. Therefore, we peck at items such as Gay Men's Health, Male Fitness, Gay (LGBT) Politics & Issues. In this section you may peck at each photo in order to decide the winner of the "war of the fittest!" Whereas, you should select the "Male Athlete" that may inspire you to exercise and "get fit!" Warning: This may stoke you!

Rankings of gay-friendly colleges are all the rage - but are these lists accurate?
By Jenna Johnson - Huffington Post - 01/06/2012

In the college admissions industry, LGBT students have become a target audience. These students (along with straight students who have gay parents) are looking for colleges where they will feel safe, welcomed and included - and many schools would like to sell themselves as just the place.

With that comes an ever-growing number of rankings of the most (and least) gay-friendly schools. In recent years, designations of "the most" have gone to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (via Newsweek and The Daily Beast), American University (College Magazine) and New York University (Princeton Review).

I think we can all agree that it's good to recognize colleges that work to ensure that all students feel respected. But ranking schools based on which ones are making more of an effort than others gets complicated. And unlike rankings of party schools or "douchiest" students, LGBT-related rankings are ones that gay students are likely using as a college search tool.

"For a LGBT student, picking a college is a matter of safety. It's a
matter of inclusion," said Shane L. Windmeyer of Campus Pride, a
nonprofit that evaluates campus climate for LGBT students but does
not rank schools. "It's not about getting laid or going to parties. So
I hate it when LGBT gets lumped into the party schools."

He adds that evaluating LGBT-friendliness requires deep research into how campuses operate: "Just because you have a gay club doesn't make your campus gay-friendly."

Campus Pride helps schools assess their LGBT-friendliness through a confidential questionnaire about policies, programs and practices. There are eight areas examined: policies, support and institutional commitment, academic life, student life, housing, campus safety, counseling and health, and recruitment and retention efforts. Schools are then scored on their campus climate - information that they can share on the Campus Climate Index Web site or choose to keep private.

"The purpose of this overall score is for campuses to measure their progress and learn key areas to improve their campus climate for the future," the Campus Pride Web site explains. "The score also allows for benchmarking among campuses as well as a better understanding on how a campus can become more LGBT-friendly."

Campus climate is rated with a star system -- the highest score of five stars is for schools with "a continuum of progress for inclusive LGBT and Ally policies, programs, and practices." More than 30 schools have earned a five-star rating, including MIT and American. NYU received four stars.

The index shouldn't be the only tool students use when looking for a college, Windmeyer said, and a one- or two-star rating could be a good one for schools located in less progressive areas. He said that students should look for schools that have academic programs that catch their attention and then use the index to learn more about them.

So, what about the other LGBT-related rankings out there? How are they decided? Here's an overview of two recent lists:

The Daily Beast and Newsweek: In its first round of ranking gay-friendly schools in 2010, the news outlet used an Advocate article about Windmeyer's book, "The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students," a list of gay-friendly colleges that was compiled by a marketing company that targets college students and "several broad measures of academic achievement,"such as SAT and ACT scores and selectivity.

In 2011, Daily Beast and Newsweek changed its methodology and now uses the Campus Climate Index (Windmeyer said he was never contacted) and anonymous reviews from the Web site College Prowler for "how students rate the diversity and degree of acceptance for each campus."

A spokesman for Newsweek and the Daily Beast said in an e-mail: "All of our rankings incorporate a wide range of data sources, and our methodology is transparent."

The Princeton Review: Since the early 1990s, the Princeton Review has compiled dozens of campus life rankings based on surveys of tens of thousands of college students. Today those surveys are conducted online, and participates must have a school e-mail address.

LGBT-friendliness has long been one of those rankings. The survey question to determine that has changed over the years, but last year more than 120,000 students were asked: "Do students, faculty, and administrators at your college treat all persons equally regardless of their sexual orientations and gender identify/expression?"

The problem with this, Windmeyer said, is that a majority of the self-selecting people filling out these surveys are likely straight and might not fully understand the experiences of gay students.

Robert Franek, a publisher at the Princeton Review, disagrees: " We talk to whom we consider college experts: current college students."
