Gay men nearly twice as likely to report having cancer

Access to care, other diseases may be contributing factors, researchers say.

[Gay men are nearly twice as likely to report having had cancer as straight men, and lesbian and bisexual women are more than twice as likely to report having a fair or poor quality of life after cancer as straight women.]

By Amanda Chan - May 9, 2011 - MSNBC

Sexual orientation could play a role in cancer and quality of life after cancer treatment, according to a new study.

Researchers found that gay men are 1.9 times more likely than straight men to report having had cancer. They also found that lesbian and bisexual women are more than twice as likely as heterosexual women to report fair or poor health after having cancer.

However, the findings do not necessarily mean that being gay, lesbian or bisexual increases risk of cancer, said study researcher Ulrike Boehmer, of the Boston University School of Public Health.

Rather, access to care, support from others, other diseases and lifestyle are likely factors that could explain the findings, Boehmer said.

For health professionals, the findings suggest that different actions must be taken for male and female patients, she said.

"Because more lesbian and bisexual women than heterosexual women with cancer report poor health, health professionals may be best advised to carefully evaluate their lesbian and bisexual cancer patients," Boehmer told MyHealthNewsDaily. "Their evaluation should determine why lesbians and bisexual women perceive their health as poor and provide services or referrals to services that would be helpful for the specific issues the patient identified."

The study was published online today (May 9) in the journal Cancer.

Differences in health

Researchers collected health data from the California Health Interview Survey from 2001, 2003 and 2005 from 7,252 women and 3,690 men who were diagnosed with cancer as adults.

Researchers did not find a difference in cancer cases between lesbian and straight women, but did find that gay men were nearly twice as likely as straight men to have had cancer.

Researchers also found that lesbian and bisexual women were 2 to 2.3 times more likely to report "fair" or "poor" health after surviving cancer than straight women. However, there was no difference in self-reported health after cancer among men, they said.

More cancers?

While the study did not examine the causes for these results, there are a number of possible explanations, Boehmer said.

For example, gay men are more likely than straight men to be HIV positive. Therefore, HIV-positive gay men are at a higher risk for anal, lung and testicular cancers and Hodgkin's lymphoma than people who are HIV negative, she said.

Another possible reason is that smoking rates are significantly higher among homosexuals than heterosexuals, said Ronit Elk, director of cancer control and prevention research at the American Cancer Society, who was not involved in the study.

"There's a whole lot of variables, but we know that smoking is huge," Elk told MyHealthNewsDaily. Smoking increases the risk of a number of cancers, including lung and throat cancer.

In fact, a study published in 2009 in the journal Tobacco Control showed that 37 percent of homosexual women and 33 percent of homosexual men are smokers, compared with 18 percent of heterosexual women and 24 percent of heterosexual men.

Next, Boehmer said more studies are needed to see if the finding that more gay men report a cancer history stems from more gay men receiving cancer diagnoses than straight men, or if they are surviving cancer more than straight men.

Quality of life after cancer

As for the poorer quality of life reported by lesbian and
bisexual female cancer survivors, "minority stress" could be a large contributing factor, Boehmer said.

"Minority stress" suggests that people in a minority group — including women who are lesbian or bisexual — experience discrimination, prejudice or violence that could negatively impact their psychological health, she said.

However, there was no specific information in this new study that examined experiences of discrimination, so more research is needed to confirm this factor, Boehmer said.

"It's been my experience that the lower quality of life that lesbians report after a cancer diagnosis does not reveal as much about the particular diagnosis, but more about our life experience in general, particularly when confronting a major life crisis" like a cancer diagnosis, a relationship change, or a job loss, said Linda Ellis, executive director of the Atlanta Lesbian Health Initiative in Georgia, who was not involved with the study.

It's not that lesbian or bisexual women walk around more depressed than their straight peers, Ellis said. But coming out to each new person, whether it's the new nurse in the chemo clinic or the members of the cancer support group, takes a lot of energy, she said.

"For some, it's easier to stay silent, or to not avail themselves of the support offered, for fear that they will be met with a negative reaction," Ellis told MyHealthNewsDaily.

In addition, it's not unusual for lesbian or bisexual women to have severed ties with family, so a person's natural circle of support may be weakened, she said. Single people surely have friends who can act as a support system, but there is not necessarily someone at home day in and day out to make things easier, Ellis said.

And even "if you are partnered, then the extra steps of making sure that you've got all the financial and legal necessary to recognize your partner's role in your life in place and with you in each new encounter take their toll," she said.

Financial reasons could also play a role – lesbians are more likely than straight women to be underinsured or uninsured because they do not have access to domestic partner health benefits, Ellis said. "The added financial strain adds another weight."

While there are some hospitals, like in Atlanta, where sexual orientation non-discrimination policies exist for hospitals and insurance companies, the study shows "the work is not done yet," she said.
Take Action:
  • Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck - Fox News.  Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights. Update: Boycott Successful: Update 4/7/2011: Beck has been fired by FOX NEWS!  Radio stations dropping Beck as well in several locations
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers.  Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well?  Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of  "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities.  A remedy: Demand Republicans to  support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians.  Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores.  Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech!  STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores.  A huge PR Disaster for TARGET!  Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays.  Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although,  Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act).  ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of  LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet.   The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC, CNBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops!  The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and now blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric.  Remember how poorly Trump  treated Rosie O'Donnel?  Now we know why he did that!  It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is bigot.  Unforgiveable!  Dump NBC because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"!  Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (who is unfortunately leaving).
  • NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone,  Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight.  This is a step in the wrong direction.
  • Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011:  Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, rumored to have them remain in some foreign stores.  This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to  the entire LGBT community around the world.  How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as  by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting.

Gay rights papers shown at US library
By BRETT ZONGKER - AP - Forbes - 05.09.11

WASHINGTON -- Documents from gay rights history are on display for the first time at the Library of Congress as part of an exhibit on the nation's constitutional history and civil rights protections.

The documents come from gay rights pioneer Frank Kameny, who was fired as a government astronomer in 1957 because he was gay. The library is showing Kameny's 1961 petition to the U.S. Supreme Court, contesting his firing.

Though it was denied, Kameny's was the first petition to the high court for a violation of civil rights based on sexual orientation. He argued the government's actions toward gays were an "affront to human dignity."

"This inclusion is an epic milestone in the telling of gay history because it places gay Americans' struggle for equality where it belongs - in the story of the Constitution itself," Charles Francis, a founder of the Kameny Papers Project, told The Associated Press.

The library quietly placed the documents on view at the end of April in an exhibit called "Creating the United States," which traces the evolution of the nation's founding documents and legal framework. Organizers of the Kameny Papers Project, which donated about 50,000 items to the library in 2006, announced the display Monday.

From the title of the exhibit, Kameny, now 85, said he can claim a new title for himself.

"I suppose you can say at this point, I have become one of the creators of the United States, which I never would have imagined in 1961," Kameny said with a chuckle. "All I can say is from the long view, 50 years, we have moved ahead in a way that would have been absolutely unimaginable back then."

The library also is displaying a 1966 letter from the head of the U.S. Civil Service Commission under President Lyndon B. Johnson, justifying the firing based on the "revulsion of other employees." It was introduced last year as evidence in the battle over gay rights in California to show a long pattern of treatment by the federal government.

In 2009, Kameny received a formal apology for the "shameful action" of being fired solely based on his sexual orientation from the successor to the Civil Service Commission, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

"So in a sense, it took 50 years, but I won my case," Kameny said.

Yale Law Professor William Eskridge, an expert on the history of gay rights, said the Kameny papers show how the government's reasons for excluding gay rights shifted over time while Kameny's position was consistent. They are the work of the initial protester, strategist and leader of a major social movement, he said.

"Frank Kameny was the Rosa Parks and the Martin Luther King and the Thurgood Marshall of the gay rights movement," Eskridge said.

"That's why it's important that his papers are available because they're the innermost workings of this great strategist and leader - and they're, of course, archival records of the movement itself," he said.

Library spokeswoman Jennifer Gavin said the Kameny papers were chosen for the exhibit because they deal with civil rights issues.

"They are simply pertinent to the issue," she said.

The papers are part of a rotation of hundreds of documents placed on view since the exhibit opened in 2008 and will likely be on view at least four months.

Kameny, now 85, began fighting for gay rights more than a decade before the Stonewall riots in New York City. The Stonewall rebellion in 1969 proved to be a defining moment as gays and lesbians fought back against police raiding a gay bar. It's celebrated with an annual gay pride march.

In 1965, Kameny was the first to stage a gay rights protest in with about 10 others in front of the White House and later the Pentagon and elsewhere with signs that read: "Homosexuals Ask For the Right to the Pursuit of Happiness," among other messages. He also took on the American Psychiatric Association to successfully argue that being gay or lesbian shouldn't be defined as a mental illness.
