Weight-Loss Tips for Fibromyalgia Sufferers

By Linda Melone, May 02, 2011

The crippling pain and fatigue you feel with fibromyalgia can leave you inactive and overweight. Other symptoms and even your medication will too - up to 30 pounds for some sufferers. And that only makes ailments worse. It's not your fault, and you can regain control. Here's how to battle that bulge.

You know fibromyalgia comes with muscle pain, depression and headaches. Excess weight may be another symptom - or the reason why you're sick.

"It's a chicken and egg situation," says Kent Holtorf, M.D., a leading fibromyalgia specialist and founder of Holtorf Medical Group, San Francisco."We don't know if the fibromyalgia causes weight gain or vice versa."

Where does all that weight come from? It's not just from lack of exercise. Several aspects of fibromyalgia contribute to these excess pounds.

When you have fibromyalgia, the appetite-signaling hormone leptin may be out of sync. That sends inaccurate hunger messages to the brain, making you eat more, says Holtorf.

Or your thyroid, which regulates metabolism, could be dysfunctional. That can slow the body's ability to burn calories. Plus, the condition itself causes a metabolic slowdown.

"Fibromyalgia patients have a 25% lower metabolism, on average, than someone without fibromyalgia of the same age and body weight," Holtorf says.

That's 500 fewer calories burned per day, the equivalent of eating two dinners every night.

Some fibromyalgia medications, such as Lyrica (pregabalin), also increase appetite.

This combination of factors make many people with fibromyalgia gain weight – as much as 30 pounds or more, says Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., medical director of the national Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers and author of From Fatigued to Fantastic! (Avery/Penguin Group).

But don't despair. You can still take control of your weight. And you should.Obesity can make symptoms worse, according to a recent University of Utah study.

The hard part, when you're exhausted and sore, is getting started. Here, experts offer proven techniques to overcome common weight-loss obstacles.

1. You hurt all over.
Fibromyalgia pain can vary daily and travel to different areas of the body. Some days, you may not feel like moving at all.

When your whole body hurts, it's hard to believe you'll feel less pain if you're more active. But it's true.

Light, consistent workouts help you move better throughout your day, says Rae Marie Gleason, executive director of the National Fibromyalgia Association.

"It won't reduce fibromyalgia pain itself, but exercise makes it easier to function with less pain while doing daily activities."

The key is sticking with a regular program. If you start and stop exercising, your muscles have to "rebound" with each new beginning.

The solution: Exercise in a heated pool, says Gleason. Warm water relieves muscle pain.

Find warm-water pools in your area, or look on the Arthritis Foundation's website for warm-water exercise classes.

When you're working out on land, take a hot bath or shower first to warm up muscles, recommends Gleason. To avoid straining muscles, never stretch without warming up thoroughly first.

2. Exercise leaves you too sore.
If you were unable to move after the last time you worked out, you might be afraid to try again.

"If you do too much in the beginning, you'll be wiped out for days," Holtorf says. The solution: Start slowly and gradually increase. Short, daily workouts – even for just three minutes a day to start – work better than longer, more aggressive workouts fewer days a week.

If you're unsure of how to start exercising safely, find a personal trainer, physical therapist or "physiatrist" (a medical doctor trained in diagnosing and treating pain) experienced in working with fibromyalgia patients.

Or, check out the Fibromyalgia Information Foundation, a website developed by a nurse practitioner featuring videos of exercises specifically designed for and performed by people with the illness.

Working with people familiar with fibro helps you watch your limits.

"You want to push a little but not so much that you can't move for the rest of the week," Holtorf says.

If you go too far, therapeutic massage (before or after exercise) from a qualified masseuse can ease muscle pain.

It helps loosen muscles, reduces trigger points (tender areas) and relieves muscle spasms, according to the National Fibromyalgia Association.

3. You're exhausted from lack of sleep.
Many women with fibromyalgia fall asleep and wake up several times during the night, leaving them wiped out the next day.

Restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea (both common with this disorder) are likely causes.

The solution: Ask your physician to refer you to a sleep lab to identify the underlying problem.

Look for a lab run by a neurologist (most are run by pulmonologists – doctors specializing in lungs and the respiratory system – looking for breathing problems).

To determine correct treatment, a neurologist will check your brain patterns using an electroencephalogram (EEG) test, which records electrical impulses.

4. You're too depressed to exercise.
Muscle pain and other symptoms of fibromyalgia can leave you feeling like your life has been turned upside down.

"Chronic pain eventually leads to frustration and depression," Gleason says.

When you have fibromyalgia, feel-good brain chemicals such as dopamine and norepinephrine are also likely out of whack, which can play a role in depression.

Exercise helps by releasing endorphins. These neurochemicals block pain and stress, improving your mood, says Gleason.

The solution: Find a health care professional who recognizes depression as part of the symptoms of fibromyalgia and prescribes medication, if necessary, says Gleason.

Since the stress of the disease can make depression worse, try mind-body practices such as yoga, which offers the dual benefits of stress reduction and exercise. Find instructors experienced in working with fibromyalgia patients.

And be patient. Easing into an exercise program means it may take weeks before you can exercise hard enough to feel the mood-lifting effect of endorphins, says Gleason.

5. You constantly crave sweets.
Do you turn to comfort food packed with carbohydrates, refined sugars and sweets as a way to self-medicate against the pain of fibromyalgia?

These foods release insulin, a hormone that packs on fat, says Teitelbaum. And sugar often becomes addictive, making you crave even more.

A deficiency of vitamins or minerals, including B-vitamins, magnesium and chromium, may also cause food cravings and reduce your metabolism, says Teitelbaum.

The solution: As a preventative measure, take a complete multivitamin to keep energy levels up.

And ditch the sodas, substitute fruit for sweets, and read labels carefully. Avoid ingredients ending in "-ose," such as sucrose and fructose, says Teitelbuam.

6. You feel headachy and groggy.
Do you often walk around in a daze? Brain fog is common with fibromyalgia. And a dysfunctional thyroid is often to blame.

"More than 26 million Americans suffer from an underactive thyroid [hypothyroidism], and less than one third are properly diagnosed or treated," Teitelbaum says.
You could also have an iodine deficiency.

Low iodine levels contribute to decreased energy, says Teitelbaum. "And when you get tired, muscles tighten."

Think of how your neck and shoulders feel after sitting at a desk all day. A tight neck and sore shoulder muscles can then lead to headaches, says Teitelbaum.

The solution: Seek out a physician familiar with fibromyalgia to check your thyroid levels for the hormones T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine).

Treating the thyroid will fix your metabolism. "Without it, long-term weight loss is almost impossible," Teitelbaum says.

Ask your doctor about supplements such as alpha lipoic acid (an antioxidant) and D-ribose (a sugar molecule), which may boost metabolism.

"Ribose is the heart of energy production in the body," Teitelbaum says. Alpha lipoic acid also gives you more drive by turning blood sugar into energy.

7. You're not sure how to eat better.
For many people, sticking with fruits and vegetables and eliminating processed foods reduces fibromyalgia symptoms.

But some experimentation is necessary.

"Studies have yet to find a specific diet beneficial to those with fibromyalgia," says Joseph G. Skender, M.D., director of rheumatology for Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. The solution: Strip out all foods with preservatives or colorings.

A clean, all-natural diet helps you stay healthy, according to Dawn Weatherwax, R.D., CSSD, LD, owner of SportsNutrition2Go.

Here's a good start: Replace sugars and artificial sweeteners with natural agave nectar or honey. Stick with hormone-free chicken and meats, grass-fed beef and organic fruits and vegetables.

And drink plenty of water, which helps rid the body of toxins.
Take Action:
  • Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck - Fox News.  Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights. Update: Boycott Successful: Update 4/7/2011: Beck has been fired by FOX NEWS!  Radio stations dropping Beck as well in several locations
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers.  Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well?  Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of  "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities.  A remedy: Demand Republicans to  support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians.  Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores.  Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech!  STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores.  A huge PR Disaster for TARGET!  Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays.  Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although,  Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act).  ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of  LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet.   The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC, CNBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops!  The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and now blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric.  Remember how poorly Trump  treated Rosie O'Donnel?  Now we know why he did that!  It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is bigot.  Unforgiveable!  Dump NBC because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"!  Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (who is unfortunately leaving).
  • NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone,  Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight.  This is a step in the wrong direction.
  • Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011:  Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, rumored to have them remain in some foreign stores.  This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to  the entire LGBT community around the world.  How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as  by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting.

And Now, Our War of the Fittest!

This group is called "Peckers Pics."  The English -  slang definition of "pecker" is to pluck at the truth. Therefore, we peck at items such as Gay Men's Health, Male Fitness, Gay (LGBT) Politics & Issues.  In this section you may peck at each photo in order to decide the winner of the "war of the fittest!"  Whereas, you should select the guy that may inspire you to exercise and "get fit!"   Warning: This may stoke you!

Donald Trump Demeans Gay Marriage By Comparing It To His Taste In Golf Putters
Think Progress - May 2, 2011 - By Zack Ford

On the tails of being the brunt of many jokes at the White House Corresspondents' Dinner, Donald Trump offers a new collection of jocular political positions in a New York Times profile. Among them is a new explanation for his opposition to marriage equality for same-sex couples. Declaring himself a "traditionalist," Trump compares same-sex marriage to long golf putters:

TRUMP: It's like in golf. A lot of people - I don't want this to sound trivial -- but a lot of people are switching to these really long putters, very unattractive. It's weird. You see these great players with these really long putters, because they can't sink three-footers anymore. And, I hate it. I am a traditionalist. I have so many fabulous friends who happen to be gay, but I am a traditionalist.

This is what he thinks makes for a "conservative with a big heart"? Generally, individuals who demonstrate that they have values -- even billionaires -- actually bother to consider the lives other people live. There are severe long-term consequences for same-sex couples deprived of the rights and protections of marriage equality, but Trump thinks a golf metaphor does justice to the issue despite the fact he took two mulligans on marriage himself.

Trump can only see things in the world as attractive or unattractive, and he has no time for anything he finds "very unattractive." Just ask the many girls he objectifies and humiliates when they enter the Miss USA pageant. His taste is a minefield of sexism bunkers and LGBT sand traps that have little to do with improving other people's lives. Trump's campaign hasn't even teed off yet, but he's already shanking his approach.

If anything, Trump should see long putters as an enticing investment opportunity, considering a majority of the population now supports marriage equality. But then again, who is really praising Trump for his business sense anyway?

Gay 9/11 hero's mom reacts to bin Laden death
May 2, 2011 - Washington Blade - By Chris Johnson

The mother of a gay hero during the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks said Monday the death of Osama bin Laden is a time for Americans to feel proud of the intelligence community and U.S. military.

During an appearance NBC's "Today Show," Alice Hoagland, the mother of Mark Bingham, who was gay and slain during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks after United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pa., reflected on the demise of the terrorist leader.

"I think it is a point in time of which the American people can be very proud, which we can take stock in and realize how very valuable our intelligence community and our military are," Hoagland said.

Bingham, along with other passengers on Flight 93, was among the passengers who tried to storm the cockpit to prevent members of al Qaeda from using the plane to kill additional victims during the terrorist attacks in D.C. During the 2008 presidential campaign, then-Republican presidential nominee John McCain, who delivered a eulogy at Bingham's funeral, told the Washington Blade he identified Bingham as one of his gay heroes.

Hoagland said during her "Today Show" appearance that she continues to be proud of Bingham and other passengers in their work in redirecting Flight 93 from its intended target.

"I'm very proud of what Mark did along with his fellow passengers," Hoagland said. "A little group of guys in the back of a pitching 747 that took a vote and decided they were going to run forward armed with nothing more than their fists and whatever they could find on board to fight real evil -- people who were determined to kill them and anyone else they could on the ground."

Additionally, Hoagland praised both President Obama and former President George W. Bush for their work into attempting to find bin Laden and bring him to justice.

"Barack Obama has been real friend to the 9/11 families and he's working hard to fulfill the promises that he has made," Hoagland said. "And George W. Bush deserves a great deal of credit. He promised the 9/11 families that he would not relent in his effort to find the perpetuators of the bloodshed of 9/11," she said.

Hoagland added that she would have liked to have seen bin Laden stand trial from his crimes, but said she's lost faith in the Article III courts because she said "certain liberal groups following their own agenda have taken the essence 9/11 struggle out of the hands of the families, and that is a travesty."

Controversy has ensued over whether to try the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist suspects in military or civilian courts, although U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has recently said the suspects would be tried in military tribunals.

"The short answer is, in some way, I'm really relieved [bin Laden] has no one to face now except his God," Hoagland said.
Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
