The birth of the 'gay plague' myth

In the first part of our new series Noel Halifax looks at how Aids was used to push homophobia

It started as an unknown illness, first noticed in New York around 1979 and 1980 in a community that generally took care of its health: gay men.
 
The media called it "gay cancer" and then "gay plague". Medics at first called it GRID (Gay-Related Immune Deficiency).
 
We now know that this was the HIV virus-a virus passed on by the exchange of bodily fluids, specifically blood, semen and vaginal fluids.
 
It has since been discovered that it has been around for some time.

It was found in the corpse of a British sailor who had died in the 1920s, for example.
 
But at the time, the condition seemed new, untreatable and without any known cause.

And because it was first observed in gay men, it became the basis of a wave of an anti-gay backlash so harsh that it is difficult to believe today.

"GRID" arrived in Britain in 1981.

Even though by then it had been renamed Aids, the media stuck to names like "gay plague" and "the gay killer bug".
 
It whipped up a wave of fear and hatred against gay people.

This became a full-scale assault on the gains and the acceptance of difference that had been won in the 1960s and 1970s.
 
Homosexuality had only been decriminalised 14 years before-and it was less than a decade since the NHS had stopped classifying being gay as an "illness".
 
Now the rights that people had fought for were at risk of being rolled back.
 
This was happening against a background of right wing victories, from Margaret Thatcher's election victory in 1979 to the defeat of the miners in 1985.
 
As there was no known cause or cure, the media spread the idea that Aids could be passed on in the air-or by kissing, or touching, or just being near a gay person.
 
They kept spreading these myths long after they were proven to be untrue.
 
Aids was said to be the "revenge of god", the product of "permissiveness"-the result of accepting homosexuality and rejecting "traditional family values".
 
This scapegoating of gays became lethal. By the mid-1980s there was an average of two killings a week in "queer-bashing" attacks. Gangs laid in wait outside gay clubs.
 
Public opinion polls showed that over 60 percent believed that gays and lesbians should be barred from teaching-or having any contact with children.
 
Funeral directors refused to handle anyone who had died of Aids, or even anyone who was known to be gay.
 
Socialist Workers Party branches found meetings cancelled by pubs or halls if they tried to hold a meeting on the subject.
 
Even the unions fell prey to the panic. The Fire Brigades Union in 1985 advised its members not to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to anyone they suspected might be infected—and stated members would no longer carry out any safety inspections of gay clubs.
 
How far the frenzy went would seem unbelievable to many young people today.
 
In 1985, Tory health minister Kenneth Clarke enacted powers to detain people with Aids in hospital against their will. The media talked of opening camps for the infected-and people "suspected" of being infected.
 
The first World Aids Day was held in 1988. But the Princess Royal opened it by saying that the "real tragedy" was the "innocent victims"- "people who have been infected unknowingly, perhaps as a result of a blood transfusion".
 
She didn't include gay people in that category.
 
That same year, the infamous Section 28 was made law in Britain. It banned the "promotion of homosexuality" in schools.
 
This set the tone for homophobic and transphobic bullying right through to the present day. It damaged generations by forbidding openness about sexuality.
 
But the anti-gay backlash did not go unopposed.
 
It was in the height of the backlash that Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners won the NUM miners' union to supporting gay rights.

The fight for gay rights continued inside the trade unions and won TUC support in 1985.
 
Meanwhile, in LGBT communities a new movement grew up to fight the attacks-with the birth of ACT-UP, AIDS-Coalition, Queer Nation, Rainbow Coalition and the battle against Section 28.
 
In the next column I will look at how this fight grew and developed over the next decade.

A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people. Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays!
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC renew the clown's show after he pulled all such low-class shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Dump NBC because they re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! NBC, Really? Update June 1, 2011: Trump now claims that Obama's long form, original birth certificate is fake. And NBC keeps this hater? NBC, You Kidding Us?

Prop. 8 ruling: gay judge didn' need to recuse himself
Backers of California's anti-gay marriage initiative, Prop. 8, argued that the judge who declared the law unconstitutional should not have taken the case because he is gay. A federal judge rejected that argument Tuesday.

Los Angeles -- A US judge refused to vacate a decision last year that declared California's anti-gay marriage Proposition 8 unconstitutional. Backers of Prop. 8 had wanted the decision thrown out on the grounds that the judge who made the decision is gay and therefore should have recused himself from the case.

Chief US District Judge James Ware said that requiring a gay judge to recuse himself from a case about gay marriage would have set a dangerous precedent.

"The fact that a federal judge shares a fundamental characteristic with a litigant, or shares membership in a large association such as a religion, has been categorically rejected by federal courts as a sole basis for requiring a judge to recuse her or himself," wrote Judge Ware.

The decision means the ruling of US District Judge Vaughn Walker remains in effect. Prop. 8 backers have appealed that ruling to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Ultimately, the case could end up before the Supreme Court, many legal analysts say.
 
Lawyers for the sponsors of Prop. 8, which declared that marriage should be between only one man and one woman, argued that Judge Walker stood to gain personally from his own verdict. Walker revealed the a 10-year relationship with another man publicly after stepping down in February.

But Theodore Olson, a lawyer for two same-sex couples who sued to overturn Prop. 8, argued that expecting judges to reveal portions of their private lives when hearing gay-rights cases could open a Pandora's box.

"What would a judge do who was Mormon, knowing the Mormon Church took such an active role" in campaigning for Prop. 8, Mr. Olson asked, according to the Associated Press. "What would a judge who had a nephew or niece or son or daughter who was gay or lesbian do? We have an unlimited number of permutations of what a judge might be asked to disclose."

Legal experts said that Ware's decision is not a shock given that efforts to remove Hispanic judges from immigration cases or to dismiss women judges from gender-discrimination cases have failed.

In this way, the ruling can be seen as a valuable "teachable moment" for those outside the legal field, say experts.

Walker's "sexual orientation was not a basis for his needing to recuse himself any more than a woman judge of reproductive age is disqualified from hearing a challenge to an abortion law or an African-American judge is disqualified from hearing a race discrimination case," says constitutional scholar Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the University of California at Irvine Law School, in an e-mail.

Pro-same-sex marriage groups said the request to vacate the decision was a veiled attack on Walker's sexual orientation.

"If the argument is valid that Walker necessarily acted out of self interest because he was in a long-term, same-sex relationship, it follows also that a married, heterosexual judge would also act of self-interest [to protect heterosexual marriage] and would have to be disqualified," says Jim Carroll, interim executive director of Equality California, a nonpartisan group which works to secure legal protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. "To vacate Walker's decision would have meant dismissing all the legal arguments in his 135-page decision for the sole reason that he is gay."

The group that filed the challenge, ProtectMarriage. com, said it would appeal and "continue our tireless efforts to defend the will of the people of California to preserve marriage as the union of a man and a woman," according to AP.
