J&J, Gilead Sign Deal For Combination HIV Therapy

--J&J, Gilead in talks to expand HIV partnership dating to 2009

--FDA currently reviewing one combination HIV product from companies

--Deal seen extending Gilead's dominance, aiding J&J's expansion in HIV

Gilead Sciences Inc. (GILD) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) agreed to develop a new combination HIV drug, and are in talks to further expand their partnership on drugs for the virus causes AIDS.

The companies plan to develop a single-tablet combination of J&J's Prezista drug with Gilead's experimental drug cobicistat.

Prezista, which has been on the market since 2006, is a so-called protease inhibitor designed to treat HIV infection and is taken with the drug Norvir, in combination with other antiretroviral agents.

Gilead has been testing cobicistat as a "boosting agent" to enhance blood levels of certain other HIV drugs. The companies plan to combine Prezista with cobicistat in a single table that can be taken once daily.

J&J will be responsible for the formulation, manufacturing, registration, distribution and commercialization of the combination drug worldwide. Gilead will retain sole rights to manufacture, develop and commercialize cobicistat as a stand-alone product and for use in combination with other agents.

Gilead will receive a flat royalty as a percentage of net sales of the combination product, if it reaches market, minus the supply price of the cobicistat active ingredient contained in those net sales, said spokeswoman Erin Rau.

In addition, J&J and Gilead are negotiating terms for the development and commercialization of a single-tablet regimen combining several components: Prezista, Gilead's Emtriva and Gilead's experimental drugs GS 7340 and cobicistat.

Piper Jaffray analysts said the new deal was a modest positive for J&J as it builds a franchise in HIV medications. They said it's difficult, however, to assess the financial impact on J&J until the negotiations on the single-tablet regimen are complete and terms are disclosed.

For Gilead, the deal further extends the company's dominance in HIV therapies, according to Lazard Capital Markets analyst Joel Sendek. Gilead's HIV drug Atripla had sales of $2.93 billion for 2010, while Truvada sales were $2.65 billion.

The moves would expand a partnership between J&J and Gilead formed in 2009. Under that deal, the companies developed a combination of Gilead's Truvada HIV drug and J&J's Edurant.

Earlier this year, Gilead re-submitted an application for U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of the Truvada-Edurant combination, after the FDA said the initial application didn't contain sufficient information. An FDA decision is expected by mid-August. The FDA approved Edurant as a stand-alone drug in May.

Shares of Gilead rose 2.3% to $41.10, while J&J was up 1.3% at $66.09 in recent trading.

A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?

  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

Gay weddings mean big business

Gays and lesbians are not the only ones celebrating the recent passage of same-sex marriage legislation in New York.

Companies big and small are gearing up to what they hope is going to be a bonanza in new business from the expected deluge of gay and lesbian wedding ceremonies once it becomes legal.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg -- always the businessman -- announced Monday a splashy ad campaign promoting New York as a great place for gay and lesbian couples to get married.

The soon-to-be-launched ad campaign called ''NYC I Do'' will be put out by the city's tourism agency NYC & Company.

The campaign ''will create hundreds of millions of dollars'' for New York City, said an NYC & Company spokesperson.

Indeed. An updated impact study by former Comptroller William Thompson in May 2009 said that same-sex weddings could bring the city as much as $210 million in three years.

Another study by Senate Democrats said the same-sex wedding industry could bring in as much as $500 million statewide, according to The New York Daily News.

"It's hard to know how big the market will grow,'' said Kathryn Hamm, president of gayweddings.com, a national website catering to same-sex couples looking to marry. "We just hope that it is as big as some of the projections we have been hearing.''

Gayweddings.com is one of several small businesses featured here that are expected to benefit from the burgeoning gay and lesbian wedding industry.
