Get Off That Towel: The Benefits of Beach Workouts

Lounging around on the shore is easy, but it won't burn any calories. With temperatures rising and summer just around the corner, now is the time to chuck that lawn chair and discover how much fun you can have with beach workouts.

If you want a low-key exercise, simply walk on the sand - you won't even have to get your hair wet! Because sand offers more resistance than a concrete sidewalk, walking along the shore increases your calorie burn and maximizes your workout benefits. Pushing off of the sand with every step will tone your butt and legs, and it's not bad for your cardiovascular fitness either.

To really get your heart rate up and improve your cardiovascular health, take it a step further by turning your leisurely walk into a heart-pumping run. If you bring a group of friends to the beach, challenge them to a game of volleyball, which will tone your upper back and arm muscles as well as provide you with a great cardio workout.

No net in sight? Jump in the water. Throw a ball to a buddy, catch some waves on a boogie board or simply splash around. Like sand, water offers tons of resistance, so practically any movement you do in the waves will help you build muscle and stamina. If you're feeling playful, copy the kids. Get down and dirty and build a sand castle, because scooping up armfuls of sand can be great exercise. Build your sand castle close to the water and make a game out of running away from the waves.

Beach workouts are so much fun that you'll forget you're exercising. Once you realize that you can tone your whole body while breathing in fresh air and being serenaded by ocean waves, you'll never want to go to an indoor gym again!

  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people. Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays!
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC renew the clown's show after he pulled all such low-class shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Dump NBC because they re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! NBC, Really? Update June 1, 2011: Trump now claims that Obama's long form, original birth certificate is fake. And NBC keeps this hater? NBC, You Kidding Us?

GLAAD not off the hook yet

Following the resignation of Jarrett Barrios as president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation on Saturday, gay activists are calling for reassessment of the group's policies and for more heads to roll over its backing of AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile.

GLAAD's board of directors will discuss by telephone on Sunday night whether to formally accept Barrios's resignation.

Barrios offered his letter of resignation Saturday amid a growing backlash in the gay blogosphere over GLAAD's letter of support to the FCC for AT&T's proposed $39 billion purchase of wireless rival T-Mobile. The letter was signed by Barrios, on behalf of GLAAD, and also by Justin Nelson, president of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

An article in POLITICO earlier this month pointed out that GLAAD was one of several liberal-leaning groups supporting AT&T's bid that had received donations from the telecom giant -- in GLAAD's case $50,000.

GLAAD and Barrios did not respond to requests for comment regarding his offer of resignation.

Influential members of the gay community say they believe Barrios's resignation is a positive for GLAAD, but that the organization may need to further clean house and revisit its advocacy for causes unrelated to gay rights.

"GLAAD certainly has an AT&T problem that isn't going to go away when Jarrett leaves," John Aravosis, editor of AMERICAblog and a leading gay rights advocate, told POLITICO.

Aravosis called for the resignation of another GLAAD board member, Troup Coronado, a former AT&T official and lobbyist. Coronado's bio on GLAAD's website said that from 2008 to 2010 Coronado worked as AT&T's vice president for external affairs in Los Angeles. AT&T had identified Coronado as a lobbyist for the company as recently as 2006, but the company said in its 2008 filing that he was no longer representing AT&T as a lobbyist.

Coronado is "going to have to pack his bags and get on the same train Jarrett is taking," Aravosis said.

Coronado could not be reached Sunday.

But when former GLAAD board co-chairwoman Laurie Perper appeared on Michelangelo Signorile's Sirius XM radio show earlier this month, she alleged that Barrios had traded favors with Coronado for his support and then backed the AT&T/T-Mobile deal in return.

GLAAD immediately condemned Perper's comments during the show, calling them "factually inaccurate, uninformed and misleading."

"We are saddened and shocked that Laurie Perper would distort the truth to this degree," the organization said in a statement.

Many gay activists say that the wireless mega-deal wasn't an issue that GLAAD and other organizations should have been supporting and that the resignation of Barrios is a step in the right direction following the public outcry.

"It was the best thing for the organization and certainly for the LGBT movement after all of the controversy over the support for the merger," Signorile, the Sirius XM radio show host, told POLITICO. "I think it was distracting for the group and all of the activists that work there. It really was something egregious that a lot of people don't expect GLAAD to be involved in and supporting on behalf of the community."
 
The writing had been on the wall for Barrios.

After GLAAD publicly backed the acquisition, a storm erupted on the gay blogosphere over the organization's position. Kindling was only added to the fire when it was revealed that Barrios sent a letter to the FCC in January 2010 that questioned the agency's net neutrality rules and appeared to mirror AT&T's talking points on the hot button policy issue. Barrios later asked for that letter to be withdrawn from the public record and told the FCC it was submitted without his knowing or permission.

After POLITICO's June 10 article that pointed out GLAAD was one of several groups that backed the AT&T/T-Mobile deal after having taken donations from AT&T, a spokesman for the organization swatted away claims of a quid-pro-quo scheme with the telecom giant. "We do not make policy decisions based on what's best for our corporate sponsors," Rich Ferraro, a GLAAD spokesman, told POLITICO at the time, noting that the organization did not support Comcast's merger with NBC.

However, gay rights advocates also acknowledge that GLAAD isn't the only public interest organization backing the acquisition. Several civil rights groups, such as the NAACP, have come out in favor of the AT&T's bid after having received funding.

With the economy sluggishly recovering, it's hard for nonprofit organizations to turn away corporate money that's the lifeblood behind their advocacy work, they say.

"GLAAD isn't the only organization [in which] AT&T has purchased so much influence," said Bil Browning, editor in chief of The Bilerico Project, a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender group blog. "These huge corporations have been able to turn around and fund civil rights organizations by influence."

The unraveling of Barrios's tenure at GLAAD over support for the acquisition should serve as a lesson to other civil rights and advocacy organizations when they get involved in policy issues that affect their corporate donors, according to Public Knowledge President Gigi Sohn.

"I hope it sends a sign to other organizations that normally don't participate in telecommunications issues that if you reflexively take the corporate position, you run the risk of being flushed," Sohn said. "You'll be found out and you'll be exposed. People need to be aware of that and not take these reflexive positions without being thoughtful about it."
