Health - Wellness - Exercise - Reflections:
HIV testing is crucial to ending U.S. epidemic

By Shirley L. Smith, Health News Examiner -  June 26, 2011

Despite the significant strides that have been made over the last 30 years in the testing, treatment and prevention of HIV, the deadly virus that causes AIDS, the majority of Americans have never been tested for HIV, putting themselves and their partners at risk for premature death, said Janet Cleveland, deputy director for Prevention Programs in the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Since 1981 when the U.S. epidemic began, 617,025 people in this country have died of AIDS, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).  Yet, more than half of  U.S. adults, age 18 to 64, still have never been tested for HIV, said Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of the CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention.

"There are about 1.1 million people in America who are living with HIV, and about 240,000 of those persons don't know that they are infected.  That is one in five of all Americans with HIV," Cleveland said.  "HIV testing is the first critical step to ending this epidemic in America."

It does not matter if you are heterosexual, gay, single, married or in a long-term, committed relationship, everyone should know his or her HIV status, Cleveland said.  "HIV has many different faces.  Love does not stop HIV, and HIV is nondiscriminatory."

The CDC along with other government and private organizations in the United States and its territories will offer free HIV testing on Monday, June 27, which is National HIV Testing Day.  To find a testing site near you, call 800-CDC-INFO or visit www.hivtest.org and enter your zip code.

"The CDC recommends that Americans 13 to 64 years of age get tested as a regular part of their medical care.  Gay and bisexual men and others who are at high risk, for example anyone with new or multiple sexual partners, should get tested at least once a year," Cleveland said.

The CDC also recommends testing for all pregnant women, because antiviral therapy can improve the mother's health and greatly lower the chance that an HIV-infected pregnant woman will pass HIV to her infant before, during or after birth.

Most people experience flu-like symptoms for a brief time shortly after HIV infection.  However, NIAID officials say people can have HIV, which destroys the immune system, for eight to 10 years without manifesting any symptoms, and they can unknowingly infect others with the virus.

Although more black people are getting tested, HIV continues to run rampant in the black community.  While black people comprise about 13 percent of the U.S. population, the most recent statistics from the CDC show that nearly half, or about 510,100, of all people living with HIV in the United States are black.  Additionally, nearly half of new infections each year occur among black people.  Sixty-five percent of newly infected black people are men and 35 percent are women.

CDC data also show that, "Black women, the majority of whom are infected through heterosexual contact, are far more affected by HIV than women of other races.  The rate of new HIV infections for black women is nearly 15 times as high as that of white women, and nearly four times as high as that of Hispanic women."

Research indicates that a range of social and environmental factors put communities of color at greater risk for HIV including lack of access to health care, poverty, higher rates of STDs and drug use.  Cleveland said some African Americans are reluctant to get tested because of confidentiality concerns, misperceptions about their personal risk and the fear of being stigmatized as a homosexual.

"One of the barriers to testing is that some people have a fear that they would test positive, and if they test positive it would be a death sentence for them," Cleveland said.  This is particularly true for African Americans, she said.  However, unlike the early 1980s when people died within weeks or months after diagnosis, today the NIAID reports that due to advancements in drug treatment, HIV-infected people who are diagnosed early and treated can have a healthier life and live for decades.

"Recent studies show that for heterosexuals who get treated right away, it reduces their chances of infecting their partners by as much as 96 percent," Cleveland said.

One of the major problems in the African American community, CDC officials say is that one-third of African Americans with HIV are diagnosed late in the course of the infection when treatment is less effective and after many opportunities to prevent the spread of the virus have been missed.  In an effort to change these grim statistics,  the CDC launched a $111 million, three-year initiative in 2007 to expand access to HIV testing in 25 of the U.S. areas most affected by HIV.  The initiative, which focused on non-Hispanic black people, provided about 2.8 million HIV tests and diagnosed 18,432 people who were unaware of their HIV infection.  African Americans accounted for 60 percent of the tests performed and 70 percent of new HIV diagnoses.

HIV is transmitted through the blood, semen or vaginal fluid.  When someone is infected with HIV, the immune system produces certain antibodies.  CDC advises people who have engaged in unprotected sex or other risky behavior to wait about three months before getting tested, because it can take that long after infection for the virus to become detectable through HIV antibody testing.  Some people may develop HIV antibodies sooner or as late as six months, but that is rare.  To be safe, individuals who take an HIV test within three months after possible exposure and test negative should get retested in another three months.
Take Action:
  • Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck's radio show and his quest spots on Fox News. Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights. Update: Boycott Successful: Update 4/7/2011: Beck has been fired by FOX NEWS! Radio stations dropping Beck as well in several locations. Now, tell FOX to stop having Beck as a Guest.
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

Gay Marriage: The Issue Is Respect
Huffington Post - Jun 26, 2011 - Marianne Mollmann

Earlier this year, a student in a human rights seminar I was teaching declared her conviction that gay parents damage their children by virtue of being gay. I explained as gently as I could why this is a discriminatory notion, incompatible with human rights standards, and moved on. My student sat as if stunned for two minutes, then gathered her books and left the class.

She later confronted me outside the classroom, and I was astonished to see just how fervently she insisted that her opinion was both based on science and respectful of rights. Neither is true. As New York State joins the ranks of countries and other jurisdictions recognizing same-sex marriage, it's worth reflecting on rights and respect.

The fact is that thousands of human beings are subjected to violence across they globe simply because they are suspected of being gay. In Brazil alone, over 2,500 men were murdered between 1997 and 2007, ostensibly for being gay. In the United States, the It Gets Better Project has highlighted the sustained violence and bullying young people suffer just because they aren't straight. This month, the United Nations Human Rights Council for the first time condemned violence and other human rights violations based on a person's sexual orientation or identity.

Of course, those who oppose same-sex marriage in New York State and elsewhere are not saying they support violence against LGBTQ people. Nevertheless, the same basic proposition lies at the root of both: the notion that you are somehow a different -- lesser -- type of human being if you are not, or are not seen to be, straight, and that society is justified in rejecting you.

For too many people it is only a short leap from seeing homosexuality as offensive to justifying physical harm. In this way, for example, the ban on inter-racial marriage in this country coexisted with societal acceptance of violence against people of color. Many times, inter-racial couples suffered violence precisely because they dared to break the ban.

But perhaps the deepest-held notion is the one that was expressed so vehemently by my student: that all children brought up by LGBTQ persons are psychologically damaged. Fortunately, it is increasingly recognized that it is not exposure to diversity but rather to bigotry and prejudice that is damaging to kids. In 2008, the European Court on Human Rights held that France was not allowed to deny the adoption application of a women just because she was a lesbian. And in February, the High Court in the United Kingdom barred a couple from becoming foster parents because their anti-gay views were held to be potentially harmful to the children who would be in their care.

In fact, research shows that children with gay parents are just as likely to be well-adjusted as children with straight parents, and that the key to childhood adjustment is good relationships between parents and children and between the parents themselves.

Marriage, of course, does not guarantee good relationships. But where family leave and other benefits depend on marital status, children are disadvantaged if their parents are not allowed to marry. The vote in Albany this week is significant because it is another step toward guaranteeing children and adults the rights and respect they are entitled to.
Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
