Study: LGBT Bullying Has Long-Term Effects

Hightstown High School lacks a Gay-Straight Alliance, but officials say they're not opposed to one

By Geoffrey Wertime - June 23, 2011 - East Windsor Patch

It's many kids' worst nightmare: getting teased, pushed around or even beaten up at school. It's a problem that's particularly prevalent among members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, and a recent study shows that sort of bullying has negative, long-lasting effects on its victims.

As reported by our partners at the Huffington Post, a study last month by the Family Acceptance Project at San Francisco State University determined that students experiencing slights like hearing "that's so gay" up through those who are physically attacked is linked to long-term problems in health and development. Entitled "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Adolescent School Victimization: Implications for Young Adult Health and Adjustment" and published in the Journal of School Health, the study found targets of LGBT-related bullying in school face increased risk of adult depression, suicidal thoughts, social adjustment issues and risky sexual behavior.

Those who reported high levels of victimization, as compared to those who reported lower levels, were found to be 5.6 times more likely to report suicide attempts, twice as likely to report being clinically depressed and more than twice as likely to report a diagnosis of a sexually transmitted infection by young adulthood.

"The power of this research is that it can help the educators, staff and administrators understand that this is serious, it has long-term effects. It is not just something that, 'Oh, everybody says those things and we're not going to pay attention to that.' People have to take that seriously," said Carol Watchler, co-chair of the Central Jersey Chapter of the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

"Being name-called one time, no matter what it's about, maybe people would say they'll get over that. But to know that this is happening in social situations for youngsters', just over and over again…" she continued.

"I asked people yesterday how many have heard the term 'that's so gay' within the recent past. Every hand in the room goes up and they know this is being used as a put-down. That's the little stuff, where we have to start to step up, because it's easy to make changes with that; it's hard when it starts to become bullying directed at somebody specifically and then becomes even physical stuff. We've got to start working on it with the level of casual comments and change those casual comments so that an atmosphere of respect is just in the air, it's what people expect."

Watchler noted that New Jersey's new anti-bullying law, adopted in the wake of the highly-publicized September 2010 suicide of Ridgewood's Tyler Clementi and signed by Gov. Chris Christie in January, now requires schools to look into reports of bullying.

Since Clementi's suicide and a spate of others by LGBT teens that received widespread media attention, bullying has also become a topic in popular culture. Syndicated columnist Dan Savage started the It Gets Better Project, in which adults post videos online encouraging young victims of LGBT bullying to stick it out and telling them that their lives will improve. The Fox TV show "Glee" recently featured a storyline where a gay teenager, Kurt, was bullied by a classmate, and Watchler said things like that can do a lot to help LGBT kids out.

"I think it gives them just a little boost of confidence to know people are talking about it," she said. "People are able to see the connection and we need to keep pointing out to them the long-term deleterious effects, and in some cases very serious actions being taken right now.

Another source of comfort to LGBT teens are Gay-Straight Alliance groups in schools, which GLSEN supports with resources when students ask. Watchler says the Central Jersey region has "a lot" of GSAs, but not one at Hightstown High School, and she said GLSEN would be happy to help set one up there. "We feel that it would be very helpful, and sometimes it just takes the right combination of students stepping up and a potential advisor knowing that that need is there and is coming together. Somehow or other this has not happened at Hightstown High School apparently right at the moment, and we're just hoping students who are willing to step forward and make that request of the administration will do so."

Hightstown High School Supervisor of Counseling Jessica Cotignola acknowledged the school lacks a GSA, but said it's not due to any institutional opposition.

"From my understanding, several years ago there was a club at the high school called Allies of Diversity," she said. "In the past few years, the faculty member who oversees the club has offered to hold meetings, but the club has not generated any interest. I would welcome the opportunity to work with GLSEN, and I have worked with Carol in the past in a previous school district I worked in. If our students wished to begin the club, I would whole-heartedly support it, and I'm sure that all the counselors (and staff members) would support the work of the club as well."

Even without a GSA, Cotignola said the district is working to bring its policies in line with the new anti-bullying law. District elementary, middle and high schools also have anti-bullying efforts, she said, noting, "All of these anti-bullying efforts include a focus on creating a safe environment for LGBT students."

After Clementi's death, Cotignola said she personally trained the staff of Hightstown High School on suicide prevention, including the LGBT teen's high suicide rate and "the extra sensitivity and risk these students have."

Overall, Cotignola said she believes the school district community is relatively accepting of LGBT students. "It is my opinion that our LGBT population generally feels comfortable among their peers, as we do not have many reported incidents of sexual orientation bullying," she said.

Watchler said it's up to everyone in the community to take a stance against bullying.

"Every one of us has a role, every person in our community has a role in watching our own language, that we're not putting out those little bits of disrespectful anti-gay language and modeling that for our youth, because that's what's going to make difference," she said.

"It doesn't matter what people's backgrounds say about being gay or lesbian, it's just that everybody deserves respect, and these disrespectful things [that bullies say] are used to put everyone down whether they're gay or not gay.

"People who are LGBT or questioning or care about somebody or are affected in any way by these questions, when you hear that stuff over and over again, it's just terribly discouraging," she added.
Take Action:
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! In conclusion, O'Reilly expressed out-right Hatrad of the LGBT Community.
  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people. Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays!
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC renew the clown's show after he pulled all such low-class shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Dump NBC because they re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! NBC, Really? Update June 1, 2011: Trump now claims that Obama's long form, original birth certificate is fake. And NBC keeps this hater? NBC, You Kidding Us?

Pressure On Obama As NY Considers Gay Marriage OK
by The Associated Press - NPR - June 23, 2011 - Julie Pace

President Barack Obama's "evolving" stance on gay marriage was headed for a high-profile test Thursday as he prepared for his first-ever fundraiser for gay donors just as New York lawmakers maneuvered toward a historic vote legalizing gay nuptials.

The outcome of the negotiations in Albany, the state capital, remained uncertain, but the vote could occur just hours before Obama's event Thursday evening in New York City.

The coincidence of timing and place was shining an unavoidable spotlight on the piece of Obama's record that causes greatest consternation for the gay community: his failure to endorse gay marriage.

Activists announced plans to protest outside Thursday's gala at a Manhattan Sheraton, where as many as 600 guests were paying up to $35,800 each to attend Obama's first fundraiser geared specifically toward the gay community.

Activists say Obama got off to a slow start as president on their priority issues, but he won many over by repealing the ban on gays serving openly in the military and by instructing the Justice Department to stop defending in court a federal law defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

His stance on gay marriage remains a sore spot. The president endorses civil unions but not marriages for gay and lesbian couples, although he's also said his views on the issue are evolving -- as are the country's as a whole.

Despite that evolution, the president did not plan to announce a new stance Thursday on gay marriage, said spokesman Jay Carney. But Carney said Obama did plan to address the developments in Albany, which could make New York the sixth and largest state to legalize same-sex marriage -- a momentous development for the president's Thursday night audience of gay and gay-friendly supporters.

"He will mention it and I think make the point as he always has that he believes that this is something that states should be able to decide," Carney told reporters traveling with Obama to New York Thursday aboard Air Force One.

"He's not going to make any new declarations of position," Carney said.

Even so, given the nuances of the president's stance, his words were certain to be carefully parsed.

"I do not think that he is going to articulate a new position on Thursday, but I do think that the timing of what we think will be a big win in New York ... does up the pressure on him to do something and might just create enough of a political magic moment to bring about a surprise," said Richard Socarides, head of the advocacy group EqualityMatters.

If Obama were to endorse gay marriage, it would give a jolt of enthusiasm to his progressive base and perhaps unlock additional fundraising dollars from the well-heeled gay community. It's not clear it would get him too many additional votes in 2012, though, because the Republican field's general opposition to gay rights gives activists no alternative to Obama.

At the same time, supporting gay marriage could alienate some religious voters the politically cautious White House might still hope to win over for Obama's re-election campaign.

Obama has said decisions on marriage should be left up to the states and has indicated support in the past for states allowing gay people to marry. As a presidential candidate, he even went so far as to congratulate gay couples in California who married during the short period when gay marriage was legal in that state before voters shut it down.

The president also signed a questionnaire in 1996 as a candidate for Illinois state Senate saying he supported gay marriage, something the White House hasn't fully explained.

In a December news conference where he made his most recent public comments on gay marriage, Obama talked about having friends in gay and lesbian relationships.

"My feelings about this are constantly evolving. I struggle with this," he said. "My baseline is a strong civil union that provides them the protections and the legal rights that married couples have. And I think that's the right thing to do. But I recognize that from their perspective it is not enough, and I think (it) is something that we're going to continue to debate, and I personally am going to continue to wrestle with going forward."

For some gay supporters, Obama's nuanced stance is a source of frustration, because it smacks of political calculation -- but also of hope, because most believe he will end up endorsing gay marriage.

"It's embarrassing to watch almost all of the absurd rhetoric around this issue that's coming out of the White House," said David Mixner, a longtime activist. "You're either for it or you're against it. You've got all the facts. Everybody's given you time to evolve. ... Enough already."

Public sentiment is moving in the direction of supporting gay marriage. Depending on the poll, people are now about evenly split or narrowly in favor.

"There's been a noticeable shift the last couple of years," said Carroll Doherty, associate director of the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. In March, the center found that 45 percent of those surveyed favored gay marriage and 46 percent opposed it. That was the first time that the survey found an essentially even split instead of majority opposition.

"There's still a hard core of intense opposition, but the broader public is becoming more supportive of gay marriage," Doherty said.

That's something the president has noted, telling liberal bloggers last October that "it's pretty clear where the trend lines are going."

The question is when, how, and if the president goes there, too.
Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
