Do You Have Job Burnout?

by Kiera Aaron - July 8, 2011 - Men's Health

Are you overworked, unrewarded, or underchallenged at the office? Then you might be on the fast track to burnout at work, according to a recent Spanish study.

Researchers sent a questionnaire to university employees in different fields in order to categorize different burnout types; they narrowed it down to three. Can you relate?

The Frenetic Burnout

The signs: Workaholics, beware. If you're so ambitious that you sacrifice your health and personal life for success, exhaustion is in your future. The study found that those working more than 40 hours a week were most likely to say that they overlook their own needs to meet work demands, compared to those working fewer than 35 hours a week. (Yes, a duh--but one you can probably relate to.)

The fix: "Put your personal life and health first," says lead study author Jesús Montero-Marín, Ph.D., professor at the University of Zaragoza in Spain.

Sure, easier said than done, so how's this for motivation: Prioritize fitness and you can be even more productive. In fact, cardio can make you 15 percent more productive, as we reported in The Aristocracy of Cardio. In theory, this means you can accomplish in an 8-hour day what would otherwise  take you 9 hours and 25 minutes--leaving even more time to spend with your family.

The Underchallenged Burnout

The signs: You feel indifferent and can't find personal fulfillment in your position, says Montero-Marín. The study found that those in administration jobs were most likely to have this type of burnout, compared to teachers and researchers.

The fix: If you're plugging numbers in to Excel all day, try to take on more challenging tasks. "If you feel stuck in an unsatisfying job, try to take on a variety of projects to make it more interesting," explains Greg Marek, senior director of marketing at MarketTools, Inc. "Try to improve your current job while looking for a new one," he told us in Quit Your Crappy Job. "You might surprise yourself and want to stay."

The Worn-Out Burnout

The signs: "You feel like you have little control over results," says Montero-Marín, "and your efforts go unacknowledged." People working for more than 16 years were more likely to be worn out, when compared to those working less than 4 years. (Sixteen years and no recognition?! Who wouldn't feel like crap?)

The fix: Are you going above and beyond? If not, that's the first step. "Volunteer to take on more work when people go on vacation," says Paul Powers, Ph.D., the author of Winning Job Interviews. "Take on work from another department so that other people take notice of your strengths."

But if you're really miserable, start taking on side projects outside of work, he says. What do you really want to do? Be proactive by volunteering, starting a website, or networking with the right people. "You'll feel better as soon as you think you're moving in the right direction," says Powers.
Take Action:
  • Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck's radio show and his quest spots on Fox News. Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights. Update: Boycott Successful: Update 4/7/2011: Beck has been fired by FOX NEWS! Radio stations dropping Beck as well in several locations. Now, tell FOX to stop having Beck as a Guest.
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

Bachmann's Wacky Porn Pledge
The Daily Beast, July 8, 2011

In recent weeks Michele Bachmann, a candidate deeply rooted in the religious right, has adopted a mildly libertarian tone.

At the Republican primary debate in June, she said that she wouldn't interfere with state laws allowing marriage equality (though she later contradicted herself, saying that she supported an anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment.) Later that month, she responded to a question about homosexuality from Face The Nation by saying she wasn't "running to be anyone's judge."

But those who follow Bachmann's career know that her evangelical commitments are even stronger than her fierce hostility to government. On Thursday, she demonstrated that once again, becoming the first Republican presidential candidate to sign a pledge that commits her to fighting not only gay marriage, abortion, and "quickie divorce," but also "all forms of pornography." The pledge goes on to imply that African-American families were in some ways better off under slavery than they are today, and argues that homosexuality can be cured.

The pledge is the work of Bob Vander Plaats, an Iowa religious right kingmaker who runs an organization called The FAMiLY LEADER. (The lowercase 'i' is meant to emphasize individual submission.) Though Vander Plaats has repeatedly failed in his attempts to become Iowa's governor, he nevertheless has a strong following among the state's hard-right evangelicals. He was the Iowa chair of Mike Huckabee's 2008 presidential campaign, helping his candidate score an upset victory in that state's caucuses. Last year, he led the successful effort to oust three state Supreme Court justices who voted in favor of same-sex marriage.

Vander Plaats has sworn not to endorse anyone who doesn't sign his pledge, titled "The Marriage Vow: A Declaration of Dependence upon MARRIAGE and FAMiLY." (The italics and capitalizations are, naturally, his.) If Bachmann is to triumph in Iowa, she'll need his help. The alliance isn't assured, since he's reportedly been talking to Rick Perry.  It's not surprising, then, that Bachmann rushed to put her name on his document.

"The Marriage Vow" begins on a racially charged note. "Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA's first African-American president," it says. It continues by denouncing the "anti-scientific bias" which treats "non-heterosexual inclinations" as innate and irreversible.

To remedy the "great crisis" in the institution of marriage, the pledge demands a number of steps. Signers promise to support a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and to protect soldiers from "intrusively intimate commingling among attracteds," a roundabout attack on gays in the military. There's a commitment to protect women and children from "seduction into promiscuity" as well as from porn, although it's unclear what such protection would entail. Further, in a vaguely eugenic phrase, signatories swear to recognize the benefits of "robust childbearing" to American "demographic, economic, strategic and actuarial health and security." It also demands the rejection of "Sharia Islam" which it labels a form of "totalitarian control."

It will be curious to see how other candidates respond. The thrice-wed Newt Gingrich is in a bind - to sign a document pledging "personal fidelity to my spouse" and "[r]espect for the marital bonds of others" would highlight his hypocrisy, but so would not signing. Tim Pawlenty, too, is in a tough spot. He needs to do well in Iowa, but promising such far-reaching intrusion into Americans' private lives probably wouldn't help him in a general election. Among the religious right, combining economic libertarianism with social authoritarianism seems natural, because the movement holds that only a society run according to a strict Christian morality can properly govern itself and avoid the crushing imposition of socialism. To much of the country, though, the idea of defending what the pledge calls our "exceptional and free society" by limiting citizens' freedoms might not make quite as much sense.
