CDC: Gay and Bisexual Men Comprise 61% of New HIV Infections

More than 30 years into the HIV epidemic, an average of approximately 50,000 people in the United States still become infected each year, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) first multiyear estimates from its national HIV incidence surveillance. The estimates were published August 3 in PLoS ONE.
 
"While we're glad it's not increasing, it's not good enough," said CDC director Thomas Frieden, MD, during a press conference this week. "The number of HIV infections remains far too high."
 
The number of new HIV infections in the United States hit a high of 56,000 and a low of 47,800 between 2006 and 2009. The incidence estimates are based on direct measurement of new HIV infections with a laboratory test that can distinguish recent from long-standing HIV infections.
 
More needs to be done to prevent HIV, he said. Already an estimated 1.2 million people in this country are infected. Of those, about 1 in 5 don't know they're infected, he noted. "If you don't know you're positive," he said, "you can't get treated."
 
Gay and bisexual men continue to account for a disproportionate share of new infections, according to the new estimates. While men who have sex with men (MSM) make up 2% of the US population, they represented the majority (61%) of all new HIV infections in 2009.
 
New Infections in Black MSM Surged
 
Young MSM (ages 13 to 29) were most affected, representing more than 1 in 4 (27%) of all new HIV infections nationally in 2009. Although young MSM of all races are affected, black MSM were the only group to see a statistically significant jump in new infections over the 4 years studied. Between 2006 and 2009, new HIV infections among young black MSM surged by half (48%), from 4400 infections to 6500 infections.
 
"CDC is very concerned about this increase," said lead author of the report Joseph Prejean, PhD, from the HIV Incidence and Case Surveillance Branch, CDC Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. "While we don't have all the answers about what might be driving this trend, we do know that individual risk behaviors alone do not account for it."
 
Previous CDC research has shown that black MSM have fewer sex partners, are less likely to use illegal drugs associated with HIV risk, and are no more likely to report unprotected anal intercourse than white MSM. Instead, CDC experts believe that more complex factors are at work. For example, young black men have higher rates of syphilis than their white peers, which can increase the risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV. Previous research has also shown that black MSM are more likely to have undiagnosed infection than MSM of other racial/ethnic groups. As a consequence, they are at greater risk of unknowingly spreading the virus to their partners, he said.
 
Structural factors including the following may also explain the trend:
•The stigma of HIV and homosexuality, which may keep black MSM from using HIV prevention services;
 
•Limited access to healthcare, HIV testing, and HIV treatment;
 
•Increased probability of having older sexual partners, who are more likely to be infected with HIV than MSM of other racial/ethnic groups; and
 
•Underestimated personal risk for HIV.
Racial and Ethnic Divide
 
The estimates also reflect a racial and ethnic divide. "Despite overall stability [in the number of new infections] among African Americans and Latinos, HIV remains one of the most glaring health disparities among African Americans and Latinos overall," Dr. Prejean said.
 
Blacks are disproportionately affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Although they make up 14% of the total US population, they accounted for 44% of new HIV infections in 2009, according to the new estimates. The HIV infection rate among blacks in 2009 was nearly 8 times as high as that of whites. Black men have the highest HIV infection rates of any group by race and sex — more than 6 times that of white men. And black men represent about 70% of the new infections among blacks.
 
The new data also reveal that black women bear a much heavier burden of HIV than women of other races. Black women have a new HIV infection rate 15 times that of white women. However, the HIV incidence from 2006 to 2009 did not change significantly for black men or black women.
 
Latinos are another group that is disproportionately affected by HIV. Although Hispanics represent about 16% of the US population, they accounted for 20% of new HIV infections in 2009. Their infection rate was nearly 3 times that of whites. Hispanic men represented 79% of new HIV infections among Hispanics. Most are MSM. Hispanic women have an HIV infection rate that is more than 4 times that of white women.
 
When asked what physicians can do to help drive the HIV infection rate down, Dr. Prejean said they could ensure that HIV testing is routine. "When testing is done as a routine, rates of testing go way up," he said. Physicians also need to help patients gain access to care. Approximately one third of people who test positive do not enter into care promptly after testing positive.

  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people. Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays!
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC renew the clown's show after he pulled all such low-class shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Dump NBC because they re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! NBC, Really? Update June 1, 2011: Trump now claims that Obama's long form, original birth certificate is fake. And NBC keeps this hater? NBC, You Kidding Us?

Pawlenty to sign NOM [Anti-gay] marriage pledge

A day after refusing the sign a pledge from the National Organization for Marriage to oppose gay marriage, Tim Pawlenty changed his mind.

"After reviewing the pledge, the governor wanted to sign it and we sent it to them this morning," said Pawlenty spokesman Alex Conant.

The five-step pledge asks candidates to commit to steps to "protect marriage nationally." It includes supporting a federal marriage amendment defining marriage as the union between one man and one woman, defending the Defense of Marriage Act in court and appointing Supreme Court justices who will "not invent a right to gay marriage."

On Thursday Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney all signed it. And Maggie Gallagher, chairman of the board of NOM, expressed her disappointment about Pawlenty to The Wall Street Journal:

"Pawlenty's communications director Ann Marie Hauser, personally informed me on Tuesday that Tim Pawlenty would not sign NOM's marriage pledge," she said. "Like many people, we are scratching our heads wondering why Gov. Pawlenty, who has been a champion for marriage in Minnesota, would not commit to doing so for America."

NOM quickly launched a campaign to single him out. In an email to supporters on Thursday, NOM head Brian Brown asked, "What happened with Governor Pawlenty? I have to be honest with you: I do not know."

"If you live in Iowa, please call up Tim Pawlenty's campaign manager in Iowa and ask Pawlenty to sign NOM's marriage pledge," Brown wrote. "I know you will be polite and civil. But he needs to hear from you that marriage is not just one of many issues; it's a key issue as you consider voting for the presidency in the first of the nation's caucuses, in Iowa."

UPDATE: Team Pawlenty chalks it up to a misunderstanding.

Conant emails: "They had a deadline that we couldn't meet because of the Governor's travel schedule, so we told them that. When the Governor reviewed it, he wanted to sign it and we told the group that, even though their deadline had passed."
