The Worst Place to Keep Your Cell Phone

Some experts say there is no conclusive evidence that cell phones are dangerous. Others are convinced cell phones will follow in the footsteps of asbestos and tobacco--substances we thought might be dangerous, but for years couldn't quite prove were harmful.
 
Since you can't hop into a time machine to see the effects cell phones have had on all of us (or not) 50 years from now, what should you do? One word: Hedge.
 
"There are simple precautions you can take to protect yourself from cell phones," explains Devra Lee Davis, Ph.D., MPH, author of Disconnect and founding director of the Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology at the U.S. National Academy of Science.

Davis is in the camp that believes cell phones pose serious health risks. She points to numerous studies that have linked cell-phone use--and specifically the microwave radiation that cell phones emit--to brain cancer, tumors, and sperm damage.

The risks of microwave radiation are hotly debated. But studies indicate such radiation can damage DNA, weaken the blood-brain barrier, and increase markers identified as risk factors for cancer, Davis says.
 
Despite her concerns, Davis is a realist. She knows you're not about to toss your iPhone in the garbage. And even skeptics will agree that there's no harm in taking simple measures to limit your potential risks. Here's what Davis suggests:
 
Distance Is Your Friend
Use a wired hands-free device whenever you talk on your phone. Or use your cell's speakerphone function--anything to keep the phone away from your body.
 
"For every millimeter you put between yourself and your phone, you reduce your body's absorption of microwave radiation by 15 percent," Davis explains.

That rule is doubly important in rural areas, where your phone pumps out more microwaves in an attempt to locate a signal, Davis says.
 
Out of Pocket
The worst place to keep your phone: in your pants or shirt front pocket.
 
Even when you're not on a call, your cell phone is still transmitting microwaves, Davis explains. And unlike your head, where a thick skull offers your brains a protective barrier, your gonads are basically defenseless.
 
"Cell phone instruction manuals tell people never to keep their phones against their bodies. But people don't read the fine print," Davis says.
 
Start rocking a hip holster. If that's not your style, a backpack or briefcase is even safer.
 
Bedroom Buzz
Never install wireless phones or Internet routers in your bedroom. Like a cell phone, other wireless devices emit microwaves, Davis says. And wireless routers and phones often put out even more microwaves then cell phones. For that reason, you don't want to position those devices in the same space where you spend one-third of your time.

  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! In conclusion, O'Reilly expressed out-right Hatrad of the LGBT Community.
  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people. Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays!
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC renew the clown's show after he pulled all such low-class shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Dump NBC because they re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! NBC, Really? Update June 1, 2011: Trump now claims that Obama's long form, original birth certificate is fake. And NBC keeps this hater? NBC, You Kidding Us?

Romney Signs Anti-Gay Marriage Pledge, Pawlenty Doesn't

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R., Minn.) and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum have signed a pledge from the National Organization for Marriage to oppose gay marriage at several levels of the federal government.

But former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who has sought to burnish his credentials as an evangelical Christian, declined to sign it, possibly putting him at odds with the social conservatives he is trying to court in Iowa. The National Organization for Marriage is running a four-day Iowa bus tour leading up to the Aug. 13 straw poll in Ames.

"Pawlenty's communications director Ann Marie Hauser, personally informed me on Tuesday that Tim Pawlenty would not sign NOM's marriage pledge," said Maggie Gallagher, chairman of the board of NOM. "Like many people, we are scratching our heads wondering why Gov. Pawlenty, who has been a champion for marriage in Minnesota, would not commit to doing so for America."

Mr. Pawlenty's spokesman said the former governor and his wife "chose to express their commitment to the institution of marriage using their own words in a video about their values and faith. We appreciate the opportunity but respectfully decline to sign the pledge."

Earlier this summer, Mr. Pawlenty declined to sign an anti-gay-marriage pledge pushed by Iowa activist Bob Vander Plaats, saying that "rather than sign onto the words chosen by others, I prefer to choose my own words, especially seeking to show compassion to those who are in broken families through no fault of their own."

Mr. Romney also refused to sign the earlier pledge, calling it "undignified and inappropriate." Mr. Santorum and Ms. Bachmann did sign that pledge.

The National Organization for Marriage is running a four-day Iowa bus tour leading up to the Aug. 13 straw poll in Ames.

Candidates who sign the National Organization for Marriage pledge promise to support a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as being between a man and a woman, defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court, appoint federal judges who don't see a legal argument for gay marriage and establish a "presidential commission on religious liberty" to protect gay marriage opponents.

The pledge also calls for a referendum on gay marriage in the District of Columbia.

Pledges have proliferated this early primary season, covering topics from taxes to Sharia law.
