    Relationships 101

    By John H. Sklare, Ed.D / May 11, 2012

On a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 meaning horrible and 10 meaning blissful, how would you rate the level of happiness with your current relationship?

If you're like most people and are being totally honest, I'm guessing few of you would choose a 9 or 10. I say that because, whenever I've asked this question in the past, I seldom get those high marks. Why? Because regardless of how good your current relationship is, it could always be better.

The best advice given on relationships can be summed up in the following word… communication.

The two kinds of critical communications are verbal and non-verbal. When combined, they create the deepest, most satisfying and healthiest kinds of relationships.

Some people are great at saying "I love you" verbally, but are poor at showing their love behaviorally.

For example, take the partner who easily says "I love you" all the time but never makes themselves available to help you when you need assistance or can't seem to offer you that all important hug when you want it most.

Then there are those who will break their backs physically demonstrating how much they love you through actions, but can never bring themselves to say those words. They're always right there when you need something physical - like helping with the housework or providing the hug I mentioned earlier - but you'll never hear "I love you" from their lips. If you need to hear those words, a partner who isn't verbally communicative can be frustrating and disappointing. And if you need to see physical demonstrations of your partner's love and they never show it, you also find yourself unhappy and feeling disconnected. Even though I generally feel that showing you love someone is more important than saying it, a healthy combination of both is needed in most relationships.

Let me ask you to again return to the 10-point scale I referred to earlier. I want you to rate yourself and your partner on the following two questions (10 means Always and 1 means Never):

    Performance regarding showing love verbally:
    YOU ______     YOUR PARTNER ______
    Performance regarding showing love non-verbally:
    YOU ______     YOUR PARTNER ______

If you answered those questions honestly, you may now have some insight that you didn't have before. By making these two subjective assessments, you can identify the areas where improvement can be made.

If you're brave enough, ask your partner to answer these questions too. This is a fun and non-threatening way to gently introduce this subject to your spouse or partner. I also think you'd find it enlightening to see how your partner views you on these two forms of communication. After seeing and discussing your scores, you and your mate both should make a conscious effort to improve those areas where communication is weak and become a better partner for the other. Your relationship will grow deeper and much stronger as a result.
    Take Action:
    • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
    • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
    • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
    • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
    • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
    • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
    • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
    • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?

Romney defends marriage and faith in Liberty University speech
By Holly Bailey / Yahoo News / May 12, 2012

Mitt Romney doubled down on his position against same sex marriage, telling graduates at Liberty University Saturday that marriage between "one man and one woman" is an "enduring institution" that should be defended.

Coming just days after President Obama endorsed the right of gays and lesbians to marry, the comment earned Romney a standing ovation from the crowd of more than 30,000 people--the largest crowd Romney has ever addressed as a political candidate--but it was his only mention of the hot button social issue.

Instead, the presumptive Republican nominee used his commencement address at that evangelical university to emphasize the importance of faith and family--and take some slight digs at President Obama's handling of the country, though he didn't name his 2012 opponent.

"Lately, I've found myself thinking about life in four-year stretches. And let's just say that not everybody has achieved as much in these last four years as you have," Romney said. " But that's a theme for another day."

Indeed, Romney touched only fleetingly on issues that could be potentially controversial. His visit to Liberty, a Christian university founded by the late televangelist Jerry Falwell, was an overt appeal to social conservatives who have been wary about his White House bid. But his appearance had generated protests by some Liberty students, where the curriculum has described Romney's Mormon faith as a "cult."

Romney did not use his Saturday address to specifically defend his Mormon faith. But he did speak at length about the importance of faith in his own life--a riff that was clearly an attempt to discourage suspicion about his personal beliefs. He argued that people, no matter what they believe, could agree on faith and moral service to the country.

"People of different faiths, like yours and mine, sometimes wonder where we can meet in common purpose, when there are so many differences in creed and theology." Romney said. "Surely the answer is that we can meet in service, in shared moral convictions about our nation stemming from a common worldview."

He argued that faith and belief in God was more important than "trivial things"--but acknowledged that he, like others, had occasionally lost sight of that. He urged the graduates to always turn back to faith.

"What we have, what we wish we had--ambitions fulfilled, ambitions disappointed; investments won, investments lost; elections won, elections lost--these things may occupy our attention, but they do not define us.  And each of them is subject to the vagaries and serendipities of life," Romney said. "Our relationship with our Maker, however, depends on none of this…The best advice I know is to give those worldly things your best but never your all, reserving the ultimate hope for the only one who can grant it."

While Romney aides insisted the former governor's remarks would not be a "policy" speech, he gave a shout out to his former rival Rick Santorum, saying that he agreed that America's greatness was defined by its "culture" and "values."  And he also argued for the protection of "religious freedom," saying it's become a "matter of debate."

"It strikes me as odd that the free exercise of religious faith is sometimes treated as a problem, something America is stuck with instead of blessed with," Romney said. "Perhaps religious conscience upsets the designs of those who feel that the highest wisdom and authority comes from government. "

On a lighter note, Romney paid homage to Truett Cathy, the founder of the fast food chain Chick fil-A, who was given an honorary degree just moments before Romney took the podium.

"The Romney campaign comes to a sudden stop when we spot a Chick-fil-A," the Republican candidate said. "Your chicken sandwiches were our comfort food through the primary season, and there were days that we needed a lot of comforting. "
