    Dieting and the Squeaky Wheel

    I'd like to begin my reflection today with a little psychological mind game called "The Word Association Test." That's where I say a word or phrase and then you tell me the first thing that pops into your head. Ready? The two words are…weight loss!

    If you're like most people, I bet those two words produced some interesting thoughts or perhaps even generated some angst and a curse word or two. The thought of dieting and weight loss can strike fear and anxiety into the hearts and minds of even the bravest of those among us.
     
    Having spent my professional life working in the dieting field, I have a good idea about what it takes to succeed and the typical pitfalls along the way. I see people constantly tying themselves in all kinds of emotional knots trying to break old and unhealthy weight-gaining habits.

    The main reason most weight-loss attempts end in failure can be attributed to something that I will call the squeaky wheel phenomenon.

    I'm sure you're all familiar with that old phrase the squeaky wheel gets the grease. It simply means that those people who make the most noise or complain the loudest are usually the ones who get the most attention.

    With that said, let me share with you what I believe to be the major reason that most people fail at weight loss. In the context of the example that I just gave, it's the squeaky wheel that gets the food and interferes with weight loss.At the heart of my approach to weight loss is a concept that I've created and written about for years called The Family Feud. It's an emotionally motivated tug-of-war that's waged inside your head every time you make an eating decision.

    Pulling hard on one end of the rope in this invisible tug-of-war is the responsible adult within you. This is the part of you that wants to look and feel better, lose weight and live a healthier life.

    Pulling at least equally as hard on the other end of this rope, however, is the compulsive child within you. This is the part of you that doesn't care a bit about how you look, what you weigh or how healthy you are. This demanding and relentless part of you simply wants what it wants... NOW!

    Now let's return to concept of squeaking!

    If you want to hear the squeaky voice of the compulsive child within you, just close your eyes and listen to your thoughts the next time that you're trying to fight off an overwhelming urge to eat junk food. You'll hear loud and clear that little voice inside your head trying to convince you to eat whatever you're trying to avoid: Oh go ahead! One little bite isn't going to hurt you! Or, Go ahead and eat it. You've been so good all week!

    The squeaky wheel is the child and the grease is the junk food.As most struggling dieters will tell you, the child usually wins this battle. The responsible adult within you simply gets overwhelmed and beaten down by the persistent whining and begging, and reluctantly decides to grease the proverbial wheel just to find some peace.

    However, greasing (feeding) this particular wheel (inner child) adds more pounds to your body and only makes matters worse, as it weakens your willpower and leaves you feeling defeated.

    So the key to winning the weight-loss battle lies in learning how to resist greasing this particular squeaky wheel. Once the child learns that they'll not be rewarded for their outburst, the squeaking magically ceases!
    Take Action:
    • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
    • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
    • Pass a LGBT friendly ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
    • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
    • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
    • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
    • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
    • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans?

    And Now, Our War of the Fittest!

    Former Stanford gymnast Josh Dixon has taken the next step in trying to qualify for the London Games. This summer he hopes to become the first openly gay U.S. gymnast to compete at the Olympics.

    He's considered a long shot to make the team, but his recent results have been promising.

    On Saturday he qualified for the Visa national championships, June 7-10, in St. Louis, where he hopes to then advance to the U.S. Olympic trials. The trials, held in his hometown of San Jose on June 28-July 1, will help determine the U.S. Olympic team. Only five men will be named to the Olympic team for London.

    Dixon recently spoke for the first time to Outsports.com about coming out to his teammates at Stanford, where he's a seven-time All-American. He says he never had a negative response from his college teammates or from other gymnasts training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, where he now resides.

    During his junior year at Stanford, he says he started dating another varsity athlete. He said the response from his teammates when he told them was, "Oh that's cool."

    Dixon, who graduated as a science, technology and society major, says he's not worried that coming out publicly would hurt him in a sport that is scored by judges.

    "This would never affect how I'm judged or my position on the U.S. Olympic team," he told Outsports. com.

    Dixon's all-around score at the U.S. Men's Qualifier in Colorado Springs on Saturday was the second-highest in the competition behind national team gymnast John Orozco. Dixon, who tore his Achilles last spring, tied for the top score on floor exercise and horizontal bar.
