Young Gay Men in Serious Relationships Need to Practice Safe Sex Too

A new study from Northwestern Medicine research suggests that while efforts to educate young gay men about safe-sex may be getting through, young gay men in serious relationships may not realize the need to keep using condoms and are in fact six times more likely to have unprotected sex even though they may still risk contracting HIV.

The study findings dovetail with recent Centers for Disease Control data showing the majority of HIV transmissions occur in serious relationships. Being in a committed relationship more strongly influenced whether a gay man had unprotected sex than using drugs with a partner, the latter doubling the risk. A new shift to focus research on committed gay couples is partly a result of the burgeoning same-sex marriage movement, Mustanski said.
 
The Northwestern study looked at the behaviors of a diverse population of 122 young men (16 to 20 years old when the study began) over two years in Chicago and the suburbs. The men are a subset of participants in Mustanski's ongoing longitudinal study on the sexual and mental health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. The study, named Project Q2, is the longest running longitudinal study of LGBT youth ever conducted.

"Being in a serious relationship provides a number of mental and physical health benefits, but it also increases behaviors that put you at risk for HIV transmission," said Brian Mustanski, associate professor in medical social sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and lead author of a paper on the research, published online in the journal Health Psychology. "Men who believe a relationship is serious mistakenly think they don't need to protect themselves."

This is likely because committed gay men feel they are no longer at risk of contracting HIV if they and their partner believe they are HIV-negative due to a history of practicing safe-sex. However, because relatively few people undergo HIV checks frequently, they may still be at risk.

Estimates suggest that around 80 percent of young gay men who are HIV positive are unaware of that fact because they do not go for regular checks. "It isn't enough to ask your partner his HIV status," Mustanski said. "Instead, both people in a serious, monogamous couple relationship should go and receive at least two HIV tests before deciding to stop using condoms."

As such, the study points out a need for greater outreach to young male couples who traditionally are not targeted in safe-sex campaigns where the focus tends to be on men who have multiple sexual partners. "This is one population that has really been left behind." Mustankski comments. "We should be focusing on serious relationships."

In order to reach that population, Mustanski plans to create two new video campaigns aimed specifically at gay youth that will offer advice on healthy relationships and HIV prevention.

  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

Chicago gay couples celebrate civil union ceremonies

Dozens of gay couples turned out for a mass ceremony in Chicago's Millennium Park on Thursday, which was the first day same-sex couples in Illinois can have their civil unions officiated.

The ceremonies took place the day after civil union licenses were first made available in Illinois. Scores of same-sex partners across the state applied for licenses under a new Illinois law that recognizes them as couples for the first time. According to state law, couples must wait until the day after they secure licenses to have a civil union ceremony.

A civil union may not offer all the same legal perks as marriage. But with a string quartet, roaming photographers and the obligatory pre-ceremony jitters, it sure felt like a wedding to some couples in downtown Chicago.

"It's funny, this morning, as I was getting dressed, I thought 'Why am I so nervous?'" said Robert Hunt. Hunt and his partner, Frank Baiocchi, were one of 35 couples united by Cook County judges. Hunt says they are hoping for full gay marriage, but will still enjoy their new civil union. "This is something that I never thought was gonna be possible in my life," Hunt said.

Meanwhile, Erica Peterson said legal rights such as hospital visitation are long overdue for committed couples like her and her new bride, Wanda McDaniel.

"In my mind and in my heart, it was like we're already married. But this makes it more official," Peterson said.

Illinois now joins five other states that have legalized civil unions for gay couples. Civil unions offer couples many of the same legal benefits as marriage, such as parental and hospital visitation rights. But they do not allow for others, such as filing a joint federal tax return.
