He's right, there is a lot to be done. We have to get the remaining 44 states overturning those mini DOMAs. I feel that if the federal DOMA is unconstitutional then that may strengthen the case for the states to overturn theirs and some like MO, who passed theirs w 70% of the vote, may need the Supreme Court to weigh in on it and overturn it nationwide. I think that some state courts however, will overturn theirs since most of them were passed in 04 and 06, and they have to prove that it furthers a governmental interest

Eating Healthfully on a Lean Budget

Everyone is trying to cut back on spending these days, but the good news is that you can still eat healthfully and keep your diabetes in check! The foundation of a good diabetes meal plan – beans, rice and whole-grain breads – are some of the most inexpensive foods in the market, says the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Here's how to supplement those basics with some healthy add-ons that won't break the budget:

For snacks, lean toward inexpensive foods, like popcorn, pretzels and cereal.

Buy vegetables and fruits are in season. In-season items are always cheapest. Plus, learn to cook meals with the changing of the seasons, such as squash in the fall or strawberries in the spring. It will give your diet a lot of color and nutritional variety throughout the year.

Visit a local farmers market. Not only will you get better prices, you will also get pesticide-free and organic options most of the time (just ask the grower). Plus you'll probably meet new friends and be able to share some cooking tips.

Use fat-free dry milk for cooking and baking. It's inexpensive and stays fresh for a long time if the box is refrigerated.

Make and chop your own. Instead of buying more-expensive precut and pre-stirred items, purchase foods whole and prepare yourself – you'll always get more value. For example, buy cheese in blocks and grate it yourself. Or buy (or make) plain yogurt and add your own fresh fruit. It takes a little more time, but saves you money.

Make meat a side dish. You can maintain a healthy (sometimes healthier) diet by making meat the smallest part of the meal and filling up on veggies and grains. You can also factor in a meatless meal a few times a week, or make sure you have soup at least once a week.

Minimize expensive alcohol, sweets and fats. It will be better for your diabetes... and pocketbook.

  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! Boycott Fox's Owner "Rupert Murcoch" and get him thrown in jail for illegal - political donations, corruption, greed, bribery, hacking!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

Report: Half the country without LGBT protections

Compiling data from LGBT organizations nationwide, the Movement Advancement Project (MAP) released a comprehensive report that illustrates that more than half the country is still without LGBT protections.

The Colorado-based think tank released its biennial "Momentum Report" Aug. 3.

According to the report, high-profile triumphs for LGBT communities in the past two years have had little impact on policies in 28 states, where protections for LGBT people are almost non-existent.

"You realize how far we have to go," said Ineke Mushovic, executive director of MAP.

The report compiles data from major LGBT organizations nationwide as well as first-hand research by MAP to create a comprehensive picture on progress in the U.S. on mainstream gay issues. Those issues include partnership recognition, adoption laws, employment protections, HIV/AIDS rates, anti-bullying policy, immigration rights, the ability to serve openly in the military, hate-crimes laws and the financial health of LGBT organizations, among other things.

The report chronicles significant victories for gay rights movements over the past few years.

Since 2009, it notes, ten states plus Washington D.C. now offer relationship recognition to same-sex couples, more than half of Americans (56 percent) think that same-sex relationships are morally sound, gay people will soon be able to serve openly in the military and the federal government lifted the travel ban on people with HIV/AIDS.

Such progress, said Mushovic, is both the product of a change in popular opinions about LGBT people and the passage of years-old legislation finally making its way through government process.

"I really think that the amount of progress at this point is remarkable," said Mushovic.

That progress has also slowed since 2009 when democrats held more political power. While the report illustrates growing support from republicans for LGBT rights issues, Mushovic said that LGBT-positive legislation still tends to advance more quickly in democratic political environments.

The report also goes well beyond policy issues. According to findings, the number of lesbian, gay and bisexual characters on primetime television has nearly quadrupled since 2001, with 23 LGB characters portrayed to date.

"In the past, if you did have an LGB character, it was usually a pretty campy stereotypical portrayal," said Mushovic. Representations of gay people are increasingly more diverse, she said.

None of the characters on prime time, however, were reported to be transgender.

Transgender statistics offered a particularly grim reality, with 90 percent of transgender people reporting employment discrimination (as opposed to an estimated 15-43 percent for LGB people). In many parts of the report, such as advancements for LGB military service people, transgender people were left off altogether because no advancements have been made.

Transgender people enjoyed at least one significant win this year, however. Last June, the federal government stopped requiring transgender people to undergo sexual reassignment surgery in order to change the gender markers on their passports.

One area where LGBT advancement suffered was in the financial health of organizations, which continued to be outspent by anti-gay activists. MAP found that just four percent of LGBT Americans donate the LGBT groups. Part of that, said Mushovic, can be explained by the fact that 2011 is not an election year, but organizations also struggled in the poor economy.

Still the most startling statistic was perhaps that less than half of the nation's states offer any kind of protection to LGBT people whatsoever. According to the report, just 22 states offer some form of protection to LGBT people. In many states, people can still be fired for being gay.

Those numbers are troubling, said Mushovic and not just because LGBT advancements have skipped over major parts of the country.

"I think there's a false believe by well-minded Americans that we're almost done," said Mushovic, adding that the majority of Americans were unaware that in many places, LGBT people can still be systematically denied a myriad of rights.

"We're seeing this two-tiered America," she said, one where LGBT rights are rapidly advancing away from states now left in the dust. "There is a ton to celebrate but don't think that our work here is done."
