What Is Folate and How Can It Help?

People with diabetes are at risk for heart and blood vessel disease, so be sure to pay attention to the amount of folate in your diet.

Why?

Because research has shown that 400 micrograms of folate may reduce the risk of heart attacks by lowering elevated levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that can be toxic to blood vessels in excess amounts, says the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

So how do you get folate?

It comes in supplements and can also be found naturally in several foods. If you would like to take a supplement, talk to your doctor and registered dietician about whether a folate supplement might be right for you.

You can also increase the amount of folate naturally by eating more of the following foods:
 
Spinach (1/2 cup has 130 mcg)

 Cooked navy beans (1/2 cup has 125 mcg)
 Wheat germ (1/4 cup has 80 mcg)
 Avocado (1/2 has 55 mcg)
 Orange (1 medium orange has 45 mcg)
 Bread (1 slice, fortified has 40 mcg)
 Dried peanuts (1 ounce has 30 mcg)

It is a simple blood test.  May cost about 100.00.   Please note, this test is not covered by Medicare.  What most people do:  Take a supplement of Folate, also known as Folic Acid.  If your Prescription Insurance Company will cover it, take Foltx, of Folbee tab.   • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! Boycott Fox's Owner "Rupert Murcoch" and get him thrown in jail for illegal - political donations, corruption, greed, bribery, hacking!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

Rudolf Brazda dies at 98; survivor of Nazis' persecution of gays
Rudolf Brazda was sent to the Nazis' Buchenwald concentration camp. He survived with the help of SS guards.

Reporting from Paris -- Rudolf Brazda, one of the last known survivors of Nazi Germany's persecution of gays who later called his three years in a concentration camp a descent into hell, has died. He was 98.

A German gay rights group said Brazda died Wednesday, but it did not provide details.

Brazda was among thousands of gay men deported to the death camps during World War II because of their sexual orientation. Adolf Hitler's Nazis saw homosexuals as an aberration and a threat to the Aryan race.

They were known as the "Pink Triangles" because of the pink triangle they were forced to wear on their clothes.

"After everything I have been through, I have no more fears," Brazda said in an interview with German journalists two years ago.

Brazda was born in 1913 in Meuselwitz, Germany, the last of eight children to Czech parents who had emigrated to Saxony in the southeast, where his father worked in the coal mines.

As a young man, Brazda had wanted to work in the local gentlemen's outfitters shop. When he failed to get an apprenticeship, he trained as a roofer.

In Germany in the early 1930s as the Weimar Republic came to an end, male homosexual acts were still outlawed under Paragraph 175 of the German Criminal Code. But there was a climate of relative tolerance in which Brazda lived openly, meeting other homosexuals and cohabiting with his partner in a room they sublet from a Jehovah's Witness landlady.

Then the Nazis came to power and enforced the laws against homosexuality.

Brazda, who was arrested and eventually sent to Buchenwald, knew a prisoner's hold on life in the camp was tenuous. One day, after giving an SS guard the wrong answer to a question, the guard attacked him, knocking out three teeth and ordering his execution. But another guard, who was infatuated with Brazda, stepped in to convince his superiors that Brazda was a vital worker, and he was given a reprieve.

"Others died, but I came through," he would say later, recalling the horror of the camps.

When the Nazi regime collapsed and SS guards set off with prisoners on long marches, costing the lives of many, Brazda survived because a guard hid him for three weeks and gave him food. American troops liberated the camp April 11, 1945.

After the war, Brazda settled in Alsace, France, near the French-German border. He met his partner, Edi, in 1950, and they remained together until Edi's death in 2002.

In 2008, when Brazda learned that a memorial was to be unveiled in Berlin to homosexual victims of Nazism, he made himself known. In April 2011, he was awarded the French Legion d'Honneur for promoting awareness of the deportation of homosexuals.

When he traveled to Germany to see his records from Buchenwald, Brazda noted that millions were broken by the Nazi regime.

"But they were never able to destroy me. I am not ashamed," he said. "I have made my peace with the past."
