  • Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck - Fox News.  Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights. Update: Boycott Successful: Update 4/7/2011: Beck has been fired by FOX NEWS!  Radio stations dropping Beck as well in several locations.

  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers.  Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well?  Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of  "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities.  A remedy: Demand Republicans to  support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform! 
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians.  Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores.  Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech!  STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores.  A huge PR Disaster for TARGET!  Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays.  Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although,  Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?  
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.    
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act).  ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of  LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet.   The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community. 
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • NEW: Boycott Donald Trump (Tune Out Trump), The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC, CNBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and his other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops!  The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and now blacks with his birther remarks and anti-fay rhetoric.  Remember how poorly Trump  treated Rosie O'Donnel?  Now we know why he did that!  It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is hater.  Unforgiveable!  Dump NBC because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"?  Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
  • NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone,  Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight.  This is a step in the wrong direction.
  • Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011:  Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, rumored to have them remain in some foreign stores.  This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to  the entire LGBT community around the world.  How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as  by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting.

Is Gay the New Black in Tennessee?

One might consider gay the new black in Tennessee. A couple of years ago, there was a ruckus about whether or not gay is the new black, and historical and political theoretical analyses suggests that there is a comparison to be made.

HISTORICAL ANALYSIS

The Tennessee Republican Party has taken homophobia from Lifeway's (the Southern Baptist Convention's commercial arm) employment application and is trying to legislate discrimination against GLBT people in much the same way that the 1870s Tennessee Democratic Party took racism from farmers' employment requirements and successfully legislated discrimination against black people.

A friend recently emailed me a .pdf file of an article from the Tennessee Historical Quarterly titled "Tennessee and Twentieth-Century American Politics," authored by Dr. Dewey W. Grantham. She had to read it for a Tennessee History class.

She pointed-out to me that Grantham included in his article a piece from Harper's Weekly of October 21, 1876.

In 1876, the Tennessee Democratic Party was entirely racist, and Tennessee's slaves had been emancipated. The Radicals (then thought to be radical because they supported voting rights for black Tennesseans) opposed the Democratic Party and had controlled Tennessee politics during Reconstruction.

The caption in the Harper's Weekly piece included the text from a well-known 1876 Democratic Party newspaper titled the State. The State reportedly published, in all capital letters, the following statement: "Let it be known before the election that the farmers have agreed to spot every leading Radical negro in the county, and treat him as an enemy for all time to come. The rotten ring must and shall be broken at any and all costs. The Democrats have determined to withdraw all employment from their enemies. Let this fact be known."

I could not help but take my friend's suggestion to provide a comparative analysis of the State's 1876 statement and of the strategic statements of Republican Representative Glen Casada, a source's recounting of Casada's participation in a secretive meeting at the Southern Baptist Lifeway building in January 2011, and Lifeway's employment discrimination statement.

Joey Garrison of the Nashville City Paper wrote about the source's recounting of the meeting to overturn Nashville's Contract Accountability Ordinance that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, "Also of note, the source relayed how organizers discussed the advantage of framing the debate as a business issue rather than a moral, Christian one."

Garrison also quoted Rep. Casada, who said, "I am going to do this. It's more than Nashville. My concern is every city in this state having a hodgepodge of laws related in business, in this case, to transgender - that kind of thing. I don't want every little local community putting these regulations in place on our small businesses and even medium-sized companies."

Lifeway, the commercial arm of the Southern Baptist Convention and the location for Rep. Casada's secretive meeting to fight equal opportunity for GLBT people, has a policy of firing anyone who they spot as an enemy to their anti-homosexual agenda and of not hiring anyone whose "conduct" is homosexual. The Lifeway application reads, "Conduct which brings embarrassment to LifeWay or impedes its credibility with constituents is unacceptable. Conduct or other actions inconsistent with that normally expected of Southern Baptist denominational employees and other Christians are unacceptable. Similarly, conduct or other actions perceived as inconsistent are unacceptable. Examples of such conduct are involvement with alcohol, illegal drugs, pre-marital or extra marital sex, cohabitation apart from the marriage relationship, homosexuality, and outside interests and pursuits which would normally be considered incompatible with LifeWay's mission."

There is a clear comparison between the 2011 Southern Baptist goal of eliminating GLBT employees from the workplaces that they control and the 1876 State's representation of a goal to eliminate any Radical blacks from the workplaces that its constituent farmers controlled.

POLITICAL THEORETICAL ANALYSIS

Furthermore, Tennessee gays have long been acculturated and expected to wed opposite-sex partners and to procreate with them. In fact, the Southern Baptist Convention's guiding code of religious laws, last codified in 2000 and referred to as the Faith and Message, states that regarding homosexuality, the duties of men and women are to procreate. The Faith and Message says in Article XVIII that the scripture is clear on a man and woman being the only acceptable form of marriage, citing procreation.

I have met many gay men who have been forced by society's standards to have sex with women against their natural attractions. This physical and psychological captivity at the hands of what Hannah Arendt would call "The Social" (another term for society) can be compared and contrasted with the captivity of black slaves.

Hanna Pitkin problematizes Hanna Arendt's concept of "The Social" in her book The Attack of the Blob: Hannah Arendt's Concept of the Social. After all, how could one compare the abuses of a slave's master to the abuses of "society"? Does "society" even have agency in the comparative sense of "agency"?

Hanna Pitkin likened Arendt's conceptualization of society as similar to "The Blob" from an old movie about a blob that is alien to the human condition and that assumes an agency of its own so that it can disempower individuals. Pitkin almost ridiculed the notion of "The Social" with this comparison, and I should suggest a different simile to express Arendt's concept of society based on her biographical adumbration of Rachel Varnhagen's life and times as a parvenu, or a person who is striving to "fit" into society's expectations of normalcy.

Based on my reading of Arendt's concept of "The Social," society is not a foreign object without an existential origin. Indeed, there is an ontological question that Pitkin does not answer: if there is no obvious origin for the existence of society, then where would Arendt have suggested that society originated?

To answer this question, I suggest a comparison of the Wizard of Oz, from the movie The Wizard of Oz. In the movie, Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tinman, along with Dorothy's dog, approach a specter of the Wizard of Oz that appears as a projection in front of them. While the Wizard of Oz appears alien to the human condition, and as such inspires fear in all of Dorothy's party, Dorothy's dog reveals the true source of the apparition: a man behind a curtain, pulling levers and pushing buttons.
 
The man behind the curtain is an excellent tool to exemplify the true nature of society's, or as Arendt would call society, "The Social's," force of power upon diffident individuals. Like a fish out of water, Dorothy has tears in her eyes as she realizes the true source of the Wizard of Oz–an old, frail man behind a curtain, and this man behind the curtain can be compared to voters in voting booths for a political theoretical interpretation.

Clearly, society as a political construct of voter preferences and voting outcomes does have a source in human capacity. People are voting in every election cycle, and they are empowering men and women to enact laws that create social norms and dictates for behavior. In this way, society is a resultant abstract form that originates in individual behaviors that create a web of social expectations. Additionally, the men who pieced together the books of the Bible and who wrote the books of the Bible before our time exert a power over those who abide by its the inerrancy of its literary significance in our lives. And, the men who wrote the Southern Baptist Conventions' Faith and Message in 2000 still exert a power over the lives of Southern Baptists who have faith in the infallibility of the interpreters of scripture for their denomination.

Thus, while Hanna Pitkin poses a valid contestation to Arendt's concept of the social, or society, and while such contestation seems to problematize comparing the contemporary plight of GLBT people to the historical plight of blacks, a new approach to denoting society as Arendt saw it suggests possibilities for interpreting the lives of GLBT people as entirely restricted, oppressed, repressed, and enslaved by individuals who vote to elect individuals who write laws or letters that become a tangled web of social norms and dictates–or, the tangled web we weave and call society.

CONCLUSION

While skin color and sexual orientation are in no way the same, there are similarities in the ways in which men of power have historically and socially controlled marginalized people based on these traits. In order to form a more egalitarian society in terms of employment opportunity, people must converse about history and the political theories that explain how a people could and still can be enslaved by society's codes of behavior. It is through this conversation and dialogues that truths can be reached, and the real truth concerning Rep. Glen Casada's media framing of the nondiscrimination ordinance as a question of economics should be noticed: efficiency of businesses is enhanced by equal opportunity, and discrimination based on qualities or immutable traits of characterization that are irrelevant to job performance are a hindrance to economic progress. If Tennessee is to become a leader in the 21st century, the people who are writing the legislation in our General Assembly must do the right thing.

It seems as though all of these Southern Baptist theocrats who are trying to write discrimination into our laws are "forgetting the lyrics." Because it is Easter Sunday, and they clearly celebrate this holiday, I will close with the lyrics from a popular Christian song and pose some poignant questions.

"Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so."

The question is the following: If you have not forgotten these lyrics, and you are a Southern Baptist who is attempting to dictate the norms of our society in Tennessee, does Jesus love all of God's children, or just the heterosexual ones? Would Jesus hire a gay man?
