A Handy Trick for Fighting Dehydration

They come in all shapes and sizes, are sold at both your local fitness store and coffeehouse and are easily one of the best and inexpensive health tools available. In fact, you may have one sitting next to you right now (and if you do, congrats). We're talking about reusable water bottles. These may seem relatively unimportant at first glance, but the fact of the matter is that most adults are chronically dehydrated because they rarely have water within reach.

Instead, we drink soda, coffee and other caffeinated beverages. These deplete the body of much needed H20 and, unfortunately, comprise most of the average adult's fluid intake. Fortunately, studies show that people who keep a refillable water container with them during the day are most likely to drink plenty of water.

You can easily become one of these bottle-toting people. Invest a few bucks in a sturdy water bottle that's dishwasher safe and let chronic dehydration become a thing of the past. With proper hydration, you'll notice a marked improvement in your overall energy levels and athletic performance, as well as in the condition of your skin.

  • Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck - Fox News.  Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights.
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers.  Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well?  Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of  "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities.  A remedy: Demand Republicans to  support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform! 
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores.  Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech!  STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores.  A huge PR Disaster for TARGET!  Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays.  Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people.  Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays! 
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.    
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act).  ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of  LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet.   The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: Boycott Donald Trump, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC, CNBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and his other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops!  The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred. He is a birther as well and bring out all the Bigets!  Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel?  Now we know why he did that!  It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is hater.  Unforgiveable!  Ready to dump NBC because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"?  Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (Real News that is Fair).
  • NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone,  Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight.  This is a step in the wrong direction.  Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011:  Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, rumored to have them remain in some foreign stores.  This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to  the entire LGBT community around the world.  How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as  by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting.  Still "no comment" from APPLE!

Strange encounters in Texas between Gavin Newsom, anti gay marriage politicos

AUSTIN, Texas -- Molly Ivins once described the Texas Legislature as the best form of free entertainment in a city that bills itself as the live music capital of the world.

From quips about shrinking government to the point where you can fit it in a uterus, to an amendment to a budget bill that would have require 10 percent courses offered by universities to focus on Western Civilization, the Texas Legislature has managed to live up to that billing once again this session.

Adding to the theater over the past couple of days: A visit from a delegation of conservative California Republican Assemblymen, conservative business groups... and Democratic Lt. Gov Gavin Newsom, the liberal former mayor of San Francisco.

Yesterday, the California delegation met with Texas Republican (and Tea Party backed) Governor Rick Perry and some of his top advisors to talk business climate. Today, the group used a committee room in the basement extension of the Capitol to hear testimony from Texas and California businessmen about how they would go about jumpstarting the California economy.

The message today -- mainly from groups lobbying for additional tort reform in California -- was the same as Thursday: Lowering taxes, handcuffing trial lawyers and a "business friendly" (or lax) regulatory climate were the keys to Texas success and could be the keys to boosting the California economy.

As far as news value, there wasn't a whole lot there. Everyone said what people pretty much expected them to say. What made the event notable (if not hysterical) was the context surrounding the rather rote verbiage.

When Rick Perry was running for re-election for his second term as governor he hitched his wagon to Proposition 2, which banned gay marriage or anything like it in Texas. The issue surfaced again in 2010 when The Texas Tribune reported that Perry was linking the issue of gay marriage to job creation.

"There is still a land of opportunity, friends -- it's called Texas," Perry said. "We're creating more jobs than any other state in the nation. ... Would you rather live in a state like this, or in a state where a man can marry a man?"

Perry styles himself as a cowboy. He's given names to the boots he wears; one he dubbed "Freedom" and the other he calls "Liberty." In the spirit of that sort of West Texas bravado, Perry likes to sit back in his chair, throw his arm around whatever is chair or person is closest to him, and squint at whoever is talking.

Thursday was no different. While listening to someone speak, Perry sat back in his chair and threw his arm around his neighbor -- except this week, unlike every other time before, Perry found his arm behind the chair of Gavin Newsom, the former San Francisco mayor who attempted to legalize gay marriage.

There was another one of those moments at the hearing room in the Capitol's basement today.

It's not uncommon for members of the Legislature to wander into hearings for committees they're not on and sit up at the dais. About halfway through the hearing, in strolled Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, who took a seat on the end of the dais next to Wall Street Journal columnist John Fund.

Chisum's made a name for himself at the Legislature over the past two decades for leading the Christian conservatives in their fight, has a particularly lengthy record in battling against gay rights.

In 1993, Chisum led the fight to have Texas laws that banned sodomy reinstated in an account that is best offered by liberal columnist Molly Ivins:

The seventy-third session (1993) of the Texas Legislature is pretty much typified by the following Warren Chisum story, Representative Chisum being the Bible-thumping dwarf from Pampa who has added such je ne sais quoi to the proceedings this year.

The Texas Senate had a rare moment of courage early in the session when it voted to remove homosexual sodomy from the revised version of the penal code. All were astonished.

Their vision made its way over to the House, where Chisum promptly rose and introduced an amendment to reinstate the damn thing. The Housies were afraid everyone would think they were queer if they didn't vote for Chisum's amendment, so they did.

Then some scholar explained to Chisum that unless he reinstated the ban on heterosexual sodomy as well, the law would be declared unconstitutional. So Chisum promptly got up and did just that.

Whereupon we had one of the more bizarre debates in the history of the Lege, with assorted avant garde members rising at the back mike to say, approximately, "Uh, Warren, uh, suppose I am in bed with my lawfully wedded spouse and I, like, kind of misaim and wind up in the wrong hole. You don't want to send me to prison for that, do you?"

Chisum would stoutly reply, "Yes, I do. It's against nature and The Bible."

So the Housies were afraid everyone would think they were perverts if they didn't vote for it, and they did.

Just a year after that hilarious battle on the House floor, the Houston Post (which was to the Houston Chronicle what the Examiner was to the SF Chronicle) reported that Chisum had invested more than $200,000 in life insurance policies that paid out when AIDS patients died. From the article (sorry, no link available to the Houston Chronicle's internal library):

Investors nationwide are paying terminally ill patients 50 percent to 80 percent of the actual value of their life insurance policies. Patients reap the benefit of needed cash for the remainder of their lives. Investors as beneficiaries are paid full policy value after death.

"My gamble is it'll make not less than 17 percent and sometimes does considerably better," said Chisum, who owns six policies. "If they die in one month, you know, they do really good."

Chisum, who's on the Texas House Environmental Regulation Committee, answered a few questions while he was sitting on the dais today. Visiting California Assemblymembers wanted to know how long it took to get a permit to drill an oil well in Texas (answer: three days).

Sitting just a few chairs away at the same dais was Gavin Newsom, who didn't say a word during the entire hearing after the conclusion of introductions.
