Room service is the epitome of convenience. There's nothing quite like settling into your hotel room for the night in an unfamiliar city and, when a knock comes on the door, your cheeseburger is here.
Unfortunately, convenience is the enemy of dieters everywhere. Easy decisions are often the ones you want to avoid, like getting candy bars from vending machines, a milkshake in the drive-through and, of course, room service at a hotel. Not only are you ordering food from a room-service menu rather exploring the neighborhood for healthier eats, but people rarely make nutritious dining choices from the confines of their hotel room. Even though better choices are usually available, it's cheeseburgers, Caesar salads and pizza that eventually make their way onto the tray.
Put down the phone, get out of your room and see the sights! While you're out, find something healthy to eat.

- Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
- Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
- Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people. Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays!
- End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
- Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
- Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
- BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
- BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
- Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
- NEW: Boycott Donald Trump [Tune Out TRUMP], The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC, CNBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and his other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred. He is a birther as well and bring out all the Bigets! Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is hater. Unforgiveable! Ready to dump NBC because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"? Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (Real News that is Fair).
- NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone, Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight. This is a step in the wrong direction. Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011: Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, rumored to have them remain in some foreign stores. This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to the entire LGBT community around the world. How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting. Still "no comment" from APPLE!

Our view: Schools must do more to protect the safety of their gay, lesbian and transgender students

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among all teenagers, but it is the No. 1 cause of death among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender teens, who often are so driven to despair by the rejection of peers, parents and other responsible adults that they see no alternative except to take their own lives. Such deaths are doubly tragic because many of these young people might still be alive had their teachers, principals and school board officials done a better job protecting them from the vicious schoolyard bullies who tormented them. Yet while Maryland has adopted relatively tough policies against bullying and harassment, too often those rules haven't translated into safe and secure environments for LGBT students in the classroom.
Across Maryland, parents of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender children say that while school officials give lip service to protecting their children from anti-gay bullying and harassment, they have done little to enforce those policies in practice. They cite incidents in which teachers who witness incidents of verbal or physical abuse have refused to reprimand those responsible, or even blamed the victim for the problem. One parent said when she complained that her 14-year-old gay son was afraid to walk to and from school because of the harassment, a vice principal at his middle school told her the boy had brought it on himself by refusing to conceal his sexual orientation.
The importance of the school environment was underscored in a recent report by Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. In the study of 32,000 11th-grade students in Oregon, LGBT students overall were five times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. But the study also found that LGBT students living in supportive situations were still 25 percent less likely to attempt suicide than those living in less supportive social environments.
Among the factors contributing to a supportive environments, the researchers cited school anti-bullying policies specifically aimed at protecting LGBT students; schools with student organizations such as gay-straight alliances, which work to make their school community safe and welcoming to all students regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity; and anti-discrimination policies that included gender identity as well as sexual orientation.
The latter is particularly important because transgender students often have an even more difficult time finding acceptance than their gay and lesbian peers. The suicide last year of Aiden Rivera Schaeff, a student at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Montgomery County, was attributed by friends to the relentless hazing he endured over having openly identified himself as a boy after entering ninth grade as a girl. Even though school officials there were supportive of Aiden's new identity, they apparently were unable to protect him from the repeated physical assaults and verbal harassment of the school's bullies. Aiden hung himself on April 22, 2010, a month shy of his 18th birthday.
The need to protect such students is more urgent now that young people are declaring their sexual orientation at much earlier ages than in previous generations. Today, the average age at which gay teenagers come out of the closet is just 13. That means they will spend a considerable part of their adolescence being openly gay -- and suffering the consequences of anti-gay bigotry and discrimination -- rather than hiding who they are until they go away to college or enter the work world.
Local advocates for LGBT students who have banded together in groups such as Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN) say that Maryland's anti-bullying and harassment laws are a good start, but the state education department needs to go further by requiring additional training for all teachers, administrators and support staff so they can recognize and prevent anti-gay bullying and harassment. The state board should also require all Maryland middle and high schools to set up gay-straight alliances to promote tolerance and respect for others, and it must strictly enforce the anti-discrimination laws protecting LGBT students.
Students have a right to a learning environment that is free from harassment, intimidation and violence. But they won't get it unless state and local officials make it clear that they're serious about holding teachers, principals, administrators and school boards to account for the safety of all the young people in their charge, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
