Prescription Copays Too Expensive?

You have insurance and, supposedly, it covers your medicines. However, you still get stuck with a portion of the bill that the insurance company calls a "copay". In some cases these copays can run more than $150/ month per medication (e.g. Enbrel). If you are on more than one of these expensive, branded medications the copays can really add up. What are your options?
 
1. Generic Alternative-  Always always always, ask your doc if there is a reasonable generic alternative. This is ALWAYS the best option for you in the long run. However, if there truly is no generic medication that comes close, then check into either (or both) of the next two options.

2. Drug  Specific Copay Programs- These programs are run by the manufacturers of the drugs, aka Big Pharma (BP). Usually, these discounts are given to all patients, regardless of income.  But make no mistake, it is a way for BP to circumvent your insurance company's cost control mechanism for prescriptions. By picking up part or all of the cost of your copay, BP trying to make their product more attractive to you and to your physician. But when (and note I didn't say IF)  the manufacturer stops offering the copay discount programs you will be back to square one. However, if according to your doctor, you must be on one of these drugs, then by all means, take advantage of the savings while they last. In the case of Enbrel, their Enbrel Support Card Program picked up the tab for six months worth of copays. To find out more info on whether such a program exists for your medication, there are many websites out there, including the manufacturer's site. However, I found the following two websites particularly useful:

Internetdrugscoupons.com-  This website shows you all available drugs that have coupons, copay and otherwise,  associated with them. It's an ugly little site, and ignore the annoying ads for a prescription savings card. But it couldn't be simpler to use. And all the coupons I clicked on were still valid- so it seems like the folks behind it keep it up to date. According to the mission statement on the website "[The founder] assembled this database of drug coupons to make it easy for people like my elderly parents to save money on their medications."

RxAssist.org- This is a super slick website that allows you to look up your medicines, albeit individually, to see what deals are offered. When you see a deal you click on the medicine and you are directed to the manufacturer's website. According to the About section of the website, RxAssist.org was established in 1999 with funding from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Apparently they also must get a big old pile of money from Astra Zeneca-- since its logo is smack dab in the middle of the home page.
 
2.  Disease Specific Copay Programs- There are many organizations that offer patients with specific diseases, such as cancer and HIV/AIDS,  assistance with their prescription copays. These programs often require financial ability-to-pay information from you to qualify for assistance. Disease Specific Copay Programs is a very comprehensive list of copay and other assistance programs compiled by a BP-funded site called Partnership for Prescription Assistance, aka PPArx.org.
Take Action:
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers.  Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well?  Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!  In conclusion, O'Reilly expressed out-right Hatrad of the LGBT Community. 
  • Boycott Arizona the home of  "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities.  A remedy: Demand Republicans to  support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform! 
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores.  Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech!  STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores.  A huge PR Disaster for TARGET!  Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays.  Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people.  Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays! 
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.    
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act).  ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of  LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet.   The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: Boycott Donald Trump [Tune Out TRUMP], The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC, CNBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and his other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops!  The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred. He is a birther as well and brings out all the Bigots!  Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel?  Now we know why he did that!  It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is bigot.  Unforgiveable!  Get Ready to dump NBC & NBC NEWS because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"!  Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (Too Bad, Katie is leaving).
  • NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone,  Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight.  This is a step in the wrong direction.  Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011:  Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, rumored to have them remain in some foreign stores.  This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to  the entire LGBT community around the world.  How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as  by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting.  Still "no comment" from APPLE!

Dear Donald Trump,

You're an a-shole.

Maybe you're not used to hearing it, seeing as how you're about as detached physically, morally, economically, and emotionally from 99% of Americans as humanly possible, but that's the truth. We all hate your f--ing guts, we're sick of seeing the beltway media suck up to you like a stillborn calf nipping desperately at the teat of life, and we're sick of this new brand of neo-racism and anti-proletariat agenda that you've been all too eager to champion as of late. Forcing the President of the United States, in the midst of struggling to pull this country out of a crippling depression against hateful, morally bankrupt opposition from the Republicorporate Party and Tea Klux Klan, to have to defend himself against such base, pathetic criticism is a new benchmark for exactly how embarrassing our country has allowed itself to become.

It really must drive you crazy that some working class Joe Schmo from Chicago managed to work his way up from a modest upbringing into the highest political office in the land. Your caviar and cigar smoke filled cranium must be buzzing day and night, trying to figure out how such a thing could ever be possible… After all, you simply inherited everything from your daddy, Fred Trump, and never had to work a real job like the rest of us. It's a great cosmic irony that you've become most famous for firing people, when in reality, you've lived such a pampered, spoiled life, that you've never even had to experience what it's like to be hired or fired. So the idea that a young, non-trust-fund-baby black man has more clout and socio-political influence than you do… wow, yeah, that must really flip your wig.

Let me tell you a short story about a young kid4 from little old Trenton, Michigan, who worked really hard in school (often at the expense of a normal, teenage social life) and decided to go to the very prestigious and expensive New York University. The boy's parents were decent, hard working people who didn't make a whole lot of money, and couldn't afford to help out their son financially. But they believed in him, in his will to succeed and his strive to do something meaningful with his life. And so, that kid went to NYU… and he graduated with honors… and--because he'd had to work a full time job while taking 18 credit hours a semester just to put food in the half-size refrigerator--eventually was forced to move back home with his parents, unable to find a job in his chosen field with such a pithy, paling in comparison resume.

I voted for Barack Obama in 2008 because I recognized myself in him, I saw the same humble, working class roots that informed everything about me. I saw a genuine human being, not some stuffed shirt, Wall Street spoon-fed, elitist yuppie prick who'd always speak up for those who needed it the least. When I look at you, however, I only see everything that's wrong with this country. I see greed, racism, homophobia, immorality, self-interest, and a general disinterest or disdain for the lowest common denominator. I see a washed up, pathetic fossil of the bloated, economically devastating 1980s, one that would sell out his own mother for a few extra dollars. I see a disgusting caricature of the ultra-radical Right Wing of the country, one that won't rest until every poor, black, immigrant, gay, atheist, or in any way non-ultra-conservative citizen of the United States is wasting away in financial squalor while businesses control not only our government and elected officials, but our schools, our homes, and even our most inner, private thoughts.

That's what I see when I look at your dumb f--king face, and I, for one, am getting sick and tired of other news outlets treating you like a serious political personality. You're not a politician, you're not a leader -- you are just another vapid, pathetic reality television "star." You have about as much business running this country as Kim Kardashian's waxed twat. It's an insult to thinking people everywhere that you would even suggest that running for president is a viable, meaningful pursuit for your crumbling, pathetic personage. Who do you think would actually vote for you? I can tell you right now, anyone with a 75+ IQ score would surely drown their only child in bathtub filled with rusty razor blades before checking your name on a ballot. As much as I'd love to see you feebly attempt to have a serious, adult conversational debate with Barack Obama, a (hopefully) hypothetical scenario that, in my mind, would most likely resemble a rocket scientist trying to reason with a retarded ape rubbing fly-ridden sh*t all over its face… I'd much rather you just disappear, just crawl back into whatever multi-million-dollar penthouse you insult with your presence these days and just stay out of my daily news feed.

It's bad enough sharing the same country with all these ignorant, knuckle dragging mouth-breathers… I don't need people like you getting them (and me) all riled up.

In summation: you're an a-shole, a pampered little trust fund brat who doesn't have any clue what it's like to work and live in this country, a back-door racist, a hater of middle and working class men and women, and you don't have any business even pretending to think about maybe sorta kinda wanting to run for President of the United States.
