Does Exercise Make You Lazy?

After you hit the gym, do you collapse on your couch? We know the feeling. You're less likely to walk, do chores, and other non-exercise activities after a hard workout, previous research has shown.

But here's the good news: A moderate workout can make you more active a few days later, a new study suggests.

A recent Australian study had 16 overweight men do two different workouts: One hour-long treadmill walk at 4 mph, and one week later, the same bout with the treadmill incline turned up.
 
Researchers expected that exercise would decrease daily activity because of exhaustion, but the results actually proved the opposite. People's activity level showed no significant difference during the two days after working out, but then surged on the third day for those who walked with the incline�by a 25 percent increase in regular activity compared to the day they worked out, according to accelerometer readings.

Why the delay? "The bout of exercise could act like a stimulant and trigger the hedonistic regions of the brain," says James Levine, M.D., Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic endocrinologist. "It basically causes a high--an exercise high--which may addict you to movement."

A 2007 review in the journal Obesity found similar results. Those authors explained that people may have a feeling of productiveness after hitting the gym, which in turn could motivate the person to be more active.

However, several studies have shown that exercise can decrease non-exercise movement. Why? The obvious answer: Muscle soreness, since those studies had subjects do harder workouts. They also only looked at 24 hours after exercise, possibly missing out on any delayed benefit.

Slumping into your couch after a workout might not seem like the biggest crime, but consider this: Someone who is more active outside of exercise can burn up to 2,000 more calories a day than someone who's inactive, suggests a Journal of Internal Medicine review.

The bottom line: If you're just starting out, small steps count. For overweight guys, an incline treadmill will give you control over your intensity level and be easy on your joints. (Click here for a beginners' weight-loss plan.) "Even the slightest exercise may get you hooked on continued activity," says Dr. Levine.

And for workout veterans trying to battle soreness, down 25 grams of whey protein after sweat sessions. A 2010 Australian study found that sedentary men who drank protein-fortified water after exercising had relieved soreness after 6 hours.

  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

ONLY ON THE BLOG: Answering today's six OFF-SET questions is Lt. Dan Choi,West Point graduate and LGBT activist.
 
In March 2009,  Lt. Choi announced that he was gay on a cable-TV news program (Rachel Maddow Show, MSNBC) and one month later, he was notified that the Army had begun discharge proceedings against him. He was one of only eight soldiers from his graduating class who majored in Arabic. A military board discharged Lt. Choi for violation of "Don't Ask Don't Tell." He had served openly in his infantry unit for over a year while publicly pushing for the repeal of the policy.

On March 19, 2010 Lt. Choi handcuffed himself to the White House fence with fellow gay veteran Captain James Pietrangelo II. The two were arrested and spent the night in prison. They repeated the action on April 20, 2010 with four other veterans including a transgender Navy veteran, Petty Officer Autumn Sandeen. After release, Choi and Pietrangelo pleaded not guilty and a White House stay-away order was imposed until trial. In July 2010 they stood trial and all charges were dropped.

Lt. Choi has served as Grand Marshal of the San Francisco, New York City, Miami, and Wichita LGBT (Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender) Pride Parades. He serves on the boards of Marriage Equality USA and the American Foundation for Equal Rights. He is a graduate of the US Army Scout Leaders Course, Air Assault School, Parachutist School, and is currently pursuing graduate studies at Harvard University.

On Saturday, May 28, 2011, you and other gay rights leaders staged a rally near the Kremlin in response to the Russian government banning a gay pride parade. First, why did the government ban the parade?

Well, I don't speak for Putin or Medvedev as much as they don't speak for my community or the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Russian government's decision to silence a peaceful, non-violent expression by their citizens for six years now sends a loud message to the entire world that they oppose the openness and freedom invoked in their official speeches.

There were Russian citizens opposed to the rally. One person ripped up a picture of Elton John?

The week before our planned pride rally, a group of hateful citizens, allied with neo-Nazis, held an anti-gay demonstration in Moscow.

Their messages of homophobia spurred a small group of extremists to violence and remind the Russian people of a bygone era when Nazis turned groups of citizens against each other and sent many communities to death camps.

The several times I was punched in my face I saw both civilian and uniformed agents throwing the punches. When I was kicked I couldn't see the perpetrator. At one point I fell and temporarily lost consciousness but I remember thinking, "These civilian thugs look a lot like military dudes." It is common practice for the police to use civilian agitators to do their dirty work and it is no surprise the anti-gay demonstration had full government support.

So you and others were arrested and detained by Moscow police. What happened? Will you face charges?

No. Unlike in Washington DC, I was not charged, handcuffed, or forced to relinquish my personal effects. In the Washington DC jail, I wasn't able to keep my phone, I couldn't call a lawyer, they confiscated my West Point Ring, they tore off my American flag insignia, and they taunted me.

The Moscow police were physically harsh, and the 18 of our community members have bruises and bleeding to prove it, but the legal penalties were not as harsh as the charges I face in US federal court this summer. The Russians arrested with us will not face charges either.
 
You're calling on Hillary Clinton to say something about the Russian ban on this freedom of expression. Given all of the international problems the U.S. is facing at the moment, what do you want from the Secretary of State?

I demand consistency. I denounce hypocrisy. We as Americans cannot pretend that our particular form of democracy is perfect while we silence ourselves on matters of basic human dignity in Russia.

When we protest injustice abroad, we show a mirror to the foreign government in order that they might better understand the ugliness of their actions. We also show the ugliness reflected by our own government, as if the mirror were two-sided.

Our democracy is not perfect, and I am mindful that flying back toAmericadid not renew any sense of full citizenship or equality under American law for me. But I am honored to stand with Russians in solidarity against our shared oppression because our battle is for justice, and "justice is not just us."

How repressive or open is Russia to LGBT life today?

On Monday morning, while waiting at downtown Moscow intersections, five guys gave me thumbs up with broad smiles. All of a sudden I didn't feel my bruises and scars but felt a sense of great dignity.

The thousands of gay Russians who filled the Moscow clubs and bars the night we were released form jail might confuse the outside observer: most members of our community in Russia are not openly gay and they avoid controversy for fear of punishment.  But as controversial as the Gay Pride Marches have been these past 6 years, they did open a public dialogue that would never have occurred if closeted gay elite strategies were the only myopic avenue for progress.
 
Like Americans, Russian citizens come from many different identities, but the commitment to values of integrity and honesty must always shine brighter than the values of personal gain. That being said, I predict the first government-sanctioned Pride Celebration inMoscow will bring at least a million tourists. I have a feeling that STOLICHNAYA or ABSOLUT Vodka would likely play a major role in organizing that event, as they do for so many of the celebrations in our country.
 
For those who have been trying to follow your military career, where is your case now–and your chances of serving again?

Don't Ask Don't Tell is still in full effect, as the bill mandated an insulting and unnecessary "certification process" which holds up full repeal until President Obama signs the certification. Soldiers are still getting fired for their honesty.

Until this administration fully repeals the law, I will not be allowed to sign up for duty. I also haven't heard from the White House whether they intend to forcibly collect or absolve my $2,500 DADT Discharge Fee.

Still, I do intend to rejoin as soon as I can, and serve in whatever capacity my country needs me, because I am proud to be an American and I am proud to fight for justice.
