Keep Those Kidneys Healthy!

Kidney problems can affect people with diabetes because kidneys tend to overwork with high blood glucose. The kidneys have to flush out the excess sugar and, eventually, may become overworked and can stop functioning. Kidney dialysis or kidney transplant are then required to remove toxins from your body.

To avoid kidney complications, there are a few things you can do:

•Keep your blood glucose under control. This is always the best way to prevent complications.

•Have a urine test to check for microalbumin (a small amount of leaking protein) every year if you have type 2 diabetes and after you've had type 1 for more than five years. Be sure it's a microalbumin test and not an ordinary test for urine protein (which does not show microalbumin), says the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Using 24-hour urine collection is the most accurate test, but that's not always necessary.

•If you have microalbuminuria, with or without high blood pressure, use an ACE inhibitor to protect your kidneys from damage, recommends the ADA.

•Control high – even mild – blood pressure. The recommended blood pressure goal is 130/80. ACE inhibitors treat high blood pressure and have a beneficial effect on your kidneys.

•Follow your doctor's advice about how much protein and salt to eat.

•Don't smoke.
Take Action:
  • Boycott advertisers of Glenn Beck - Fox News.  Glenn Beck is anti-gay rights.
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers.  Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well?  Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida!
  • Boycott Arizona the home of  "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities.  A remedy: Demand Republicans to  support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform! 
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores.  Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech!  STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores.  A huge PR Disaster for TARGET!  Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays.  Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people.  Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays! 
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.    
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act).  ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of  LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet.   The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: Boycott Donald Trump, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC, CNBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and his other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops!  The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred. He is a birther as well and bring out all the Bigets!  Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel?  Now we know why he did that!  It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is hater.  Unforgiveable!  Ready to dump NBC because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"?  Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (Real News that is Fair).
  • NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone,  Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight.  This is a step in the wrong direction.  Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011:  Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, rumored to have them remain in some foreign stores.  This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to  the entire LGBT community around the world.  How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as  by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting.  Still "no comment" from APPLE!

False alarm: DADT repeal not so bad

Condolences to all former husbands and former wives whose marriages have been ruined as the encroachment of gay rights erodes the institution of marriage. I know all of you would still be married today if it weren't for the rise of civil unions and the fall of "don't ask, don't tell." These ghastly trends toward tolerance certainly boost the divorce rate much higher than, say, adultery, alcoholism, spousal abuse, financial hardships, bowling leagues and poker parties.

Last week, I went searching for explanations of how the American way of life is being torn asunder by these trends. I was drawn to a story in The Washington Post on Monday that began: "Congressional Republicans -- still seething from last year's repeal of the military's 'don't ask, don't tell' policy -- are hoping for a progress report Thursday from the military's top service chiefs about training programs designed to inform the rank and file about ending the ban on gays (serving openly) in the military."

Oh, goody! Let's bring in the top brass before the House Armed Services Committee, have 'em tell us how much they miss DADT and then let's correct that awful decision made by Democrats last December.

Uh, it turns out that particular GOP strategy backfired. Gen. James Amos, commandant of the U.S. Marine Corp, told the House panel: "I'm looking specifically for issues that might arise coming out of the training, and the reality is that we've not seen them. I've asked for feedback … the clear majority of it is very positive."

This was particularly noteworthy because Amos last year had been one of the most vocal opponents of the repeal of DADT.

As for the Air Force, Gen. Norton Schwartz told the panel: "I'm more comfortable than I was on the 22nd of December, but we still have a ways to go, and it requires the constant attention of all of us to bring this home."

Adm. Gary Roughead, chief of naval operations, said: "I'm very comfortable. I was very comfortable in making the recommendation last December and it's consistent with what I continue to see in the Navy today."

Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Chiarelli said Army commanders "have indicated no issues so far" in the first two of three phases of training.

- States are weighing in

Well, gosh, that hearing certainly didn't go as well as the House's new GOP majority had planned. Perhaps I might find some evidence among the various states that the gay-rights genie could be coaxed back into the bottle.

In our own Washington, Gov. Chris Gregoire on Tuesday signed a bill that extends to out-of-state same-sex marriages the same rights and protections given to registered domestic partnerships in this state.

On Thursday, the Delaware state Senate by a 13-6 vote (why does Delaware have 19 state senators?) passed a bill that would allow same-sex couples to enter into civil unions. That measure now goes to the Delaware House.

Overall, it's looking like this genie won't be subdued. Earlier this year, a poll conducted for ABC News and The Washington Post showed that 53 percent of respondents support same-sex marriage. That's up more than 20 points from 32 percent eight years ago. Back in 2004, gay marriage had majority support of people younger than 30, but now majority support is seen among people in their 30s and 40s.

Civil unions and domestic partnerships are two parts of a larger trend. Gay marriage has been legalized in Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Iowa and the District of Columbia.

As for the diminishing ranks of gay-rights opponents, you can still cling to a few planks of bigotry floating in the rising sea of equality. There's always the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which protects at least two lingering injustices: Binational couples still face the fear of deportation of the noncitizen spouse because of DOMA, and same-sex couples in states that recognize such marriages still must file separately with the IRS.

Nevertheless, the inexorable march to a more civilized society continues. And some day, our descendants will shake their heads and wonder why it had to proceed at such a plodding pace.
