I agree Blake was a good host, but I was also put off at his shot at Jake. I thought it was very unbecoming a man of Blake's character, I saw Broke Back Mountain and thought the movie was very tastefully done and that Jake did a very good job in that role.

New Alzheimer's Genes: Why They Matter, Even If They Don't Change Patient Care

Genes are a gateway to understanding disease, and Alzheimer's is certainly no exception. In recent years, researchers have grown the list of known genes associated with the most common form of the condition, which affects memory and brain function the elderly. But the question is, How do these discoveries help patients?
This week, two groups reported in the journal Nature Genetics that they had identified five new genes linked to an increased risk of late-onset Alzheimer's - doubling the total number of genes known to contribute to the risk of the neurological disorder. Researchers were particularly excited by the discoveries, because they implicated new biological pathways - such as inflammation, cholesterol and cell transport systems - that had been suspected to play a role in Alzheimer's, but had never been confirmed to do so.

The findings uncover brand new targets for potential treatments for the disease, whether they may be drugs, behavioral changes or other therapies.

But as the list of known risk genes grows, doctors' ability to act on the new information remains relatively stagnant. Knowing a patient's genetic profile doesn't change his or her prognosis nor does it change treatment options for Alzheimer's patients -- at least not yet.

So what should the 5.4 million current Alzheimer's patients do with this stream of new information about their condition? Jennifer Williamson, a genetic counselor at Columbia University, one of the centers that contributed to the new gene discoveries, says it's important for those concerned about Alzheimer's to put the breakthroughs in perspective.

The identification of genes that may, when altered, confer more or less risk of developing the disease is only the first step in a long journey toward a test or a drug from which patients can benefit. Think of such genetic studies as reconnaissance missions -- their goal is to survey the genetic landscape and identify possible weaknesses or areas of interest that set the DNA of Alzheimer's patients apart from that of healthy controls.

These genetic variants will then have to be tested in larger populations to confirm how they contribute to processes like amyloid and tau formation or to symptoms of memory loss and cognitive decline -- the hallmarks of Alzheimer's. From there, scientists will have to scan thousands of chemical compounds for their ability to modify the effects of these genes, and more trials in patients will have to verify whether these effects have an impact on the symptoms or progression of the disease.

That's a long but optimistic road toward scientific discovery, says Williamson, yet one on which many of the patients she counsels are willing to embark. "We take pains to be very honest with participants in our trials, and the people realize the enormity of the task at hand of trying to figure out this complicated illness," she says. "A lot of my job is explaining to people the limitations of what we understand and what we don't understand, and that there are a lot of incremental steps toward having a better understanding of this disease."

Alzheimer's gene trials can sometimes be a hard sell for potential volunteers, since they know up front that they will not benefit in any way from the knowledge emerging from the studies. "A lot of people understand that there isn't much that they can do about their disease," says Williamson, "so my job is to help them understand the facts and deal with their feelings of anxiety and worry, not just about their own health but about not wanting their children to be a in a position of caregiving when they become ill."

The only action many patients can take is to join clinical trials in order to help researchers uncover the causes the disease, and help future generations. While that might seem like poor consolation, Williamson says that rather than frustrating patients, the string of innovations occurring in the field in recent years has actually galvanized them, as well as others who are at high risk for the disease.

Along with the identification of new genes, researchers have also discovered new ways of using imaging techniques, such as MRI, blood tests or spinal fluid tests, to predict who is more likely to progress to advanced stages of Alzheimer's. These advances have inspired more people to volunteer for clinical trials. "They really have an interest in figuring this disease out," says Williamson. "They realize they can be part of the solution, and that we can't understand this disease without having more patients participate in studies."

And the more people volunteer, she says, the more researchers can learn and eventually, someday repay their contribution by developing treatments that may help future generations stop the disease in its tracks.

  • Boycott Arizona the home of  "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities.  A remedy: Demand Republicans to  support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform! 
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores.  Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech!  STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.    
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act).  ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of  LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet.   The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: Boycott Donald Trump, The Apprentice and NBC Network! Trump stated he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice running - when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any building with Donald Trump's name!  The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred.  Remember how poorly he treated Rosie O'Donnel?  Now we know why he did that!  It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is hater.  Unforgiveable!  Ready to dump NBC because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"?  Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
  • NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone,  Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight.  This is a step in the wrong direction.
    Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011:  Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, possibly not from foreign stores.  This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to  the entire LGBT community around the world.  How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as  by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting.  
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!

Blake Shelton Called Jake Gyllenhaal Gay During ACMs

Blake Shelton took a crack at hosting the other night at the ACMs (American Country Music Awards).

If you ask us and some others, though, he overstepped a few boundaries with a few of his jokes. The frustrating part of it was that he WASN'T that bad as a host, which confuses us as to why he'd have to stoop down low with a few of his lines.

Other than the jab at LeAnn Rimes and the circumstances around her marriages, we're referring to Jake Gyllenhaal being called a gay man, all because he is no longer with Taylor Swift, and spinning it as if it would be a bad thing if it were true!

Here's the joke:
"Don't make jokes about Taylor Swift. If you make her mad, she'll write a song about you. She writes songs about guys who break up with her. Which I don't understand in the first place. She's beautiful, she's talented, she's sweet. What in the world was Jake Gyllenhaal thinking anyway?

Wait a minute, he was in Brokeback Mountain."
You're right, he could have said much more offensive things at the sake of the same joke, but we just think it's in bad taste regardless of severity.

We're a little disappointed, Blake. You did fine without that kind of stuff!
