'Fabulous' duo tout veggie gardening

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - If you watch the Planet Green channel, it's a good bet you're familiar with its most "fabulous" program.

The Fabulous Beekman Boys, that is.

A gay couple from New York City - a doctor who used to work with Martha Stewart and an ad man and best-selling author who used to work as a drag queen - buy a weekend place in Upstate New York and try to make a go of farm life.

But the simple life, they discover, is anything but. To keep their farm - a near-million-dollar home known as the Beekman Mansion on 60 acres several hours north of New York - they start making specialty soaps and cheeses. Before they know it, they have 80 goats, a pig, some chickens, and a temperamental llama.

Cue the hilarity.

The show not only is a hit, it has also spawned a national effort to encourage people to plant vegetable gardens. The stars - Brent Ridge, the doctor, and Josh Kilmer-Purcell - are now partnering with Williams-Sonoma to sell their line of Beekman 1802 heirloom vegetable seeds.

At a book-signing last month to promote the effort, Steven Quade, an Overland Park, Kan., chiropractor, praised the program.

"The whole concept is a reality show, but you have a point to it," he said. "The closer to the source you are, the more wholesome your food. And for all of us to take responsibility for our health we have to lead lifestyles that promote that health. So what you're doing is amazing."

Kilmer-Purcell smiled.

"We really believe in that philosophy," he said. "But we also see a lot of dogmatic green thinking. When some people decide to go green and go off the grid they get really harpy about it. We wanted to show that you can lead that same healthy lifestyle, and it can be fun."

As the show's second season gets under way (it's on at 10 p.m. Tuesdays on Planet Green), we asked the boys about their newfound rural life in front of the lens.

Question: How long have you been partners, and how did you meet?

Brent: Going on 11 years. And we met the old-fashioned way. Online.

Q: Did you buy the mansion and farm on a whim?

Josh: Yes. We call ourselves accidental goat farmers. We were going to pick apples when we stumbled on the farm (in Sharon Springs, N.Y.) and purchased it. It was going to be a weekend place. But a week later we got a letter from Farmer John. He was losing his farm, and he had 30 days to find a new place for his goats.

Q: Your show has been called the gay Green Acres. What do you think of that?

Josh: It's more serious than that. We're a couple who took a big chance, and we're struggling to build a business in tough times. A lot of people are living what we're living.

Q: What have you learned from running a farm?

Brent: It has made us value food more. That's a real problem today, and why so many small farms are going out of business. People don't value quality food. We're taught to want a new flat-screen TV and a new iPod. What we don't realize is that there are families who need to make a living. We need to value that more. Having our own farm and raising our own food does that.

Q: Have you been surprised by anything with the show?

Brent: What surprised us is how many wives e-mailed us and said, "We never would have watched a show with a gay couple in it, but now that we've seen your relationship it's just like ours and that's really changed our minds." We just wanted to entertain people. We didn't know it would have a sociological impact. But we're so glad that it has.

Q: How much were they asking, and how much did you pay for the mansion?

Josh: It was under a million dollars, but not much. We really scraped to put that money together.

Q: Tell us about your national garden project.

Brent: The project is called the World's Largest Community Garden. It's a partnership between our farm, Beekman 1802, and Williams-Sonoma. We grow 110 different varieties of heirloom vegetables. We've packaged 10 varieties of the heirloom vegetable seeds that are for sale at Williams-Sonoma. Our goal is to get 10,000 people to grow these vegetables.

Q: What's the community aspect?

Brent: We're building an online community around the gardens, where people can ask questions not only of us but of other gardeners, including gardeners in their area. And, if you happen to be an expert gardener already, we want you to share your advice through the website. Because we never present ourselves as experts. We're learners, and we want people to experience that learning process with us.

At the end of the season we are going to ask gardeners to weigh their produce so we can figure out how many tons of food the gardens generated.

Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform! 
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians.  Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores.  Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech!  STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.    
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act).  ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of  LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet.   The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community. 
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • NEW: Boycott Donald Trump, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and his other business's. Don't shop at any bulklding with Donald Trump's name!  The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred.  Remember how poorly he treated Rosie O'Donnel?  Now we know why he did that!  It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is hater.  Unforgiveable!  Ready to dump NBC because they air Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"?  Start Watching CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
  • NEW: Boycott "APPLE." For the current owners and the aspiring owners of the I-phone,  Apple allows an application, "The Gay App", which is supposed to help gay individuals turn straight.  This is a step in the wrong direction.
    Apple needs to know that the decision to allow this App on their products is a fallacious idea! Update: March 23, 2011:  Apple removed this app from USA stores; but, rumored to have them remain in some foreign stores.  This is offensive not just towards the LGBT community in the USA; but, offensive to  the entire LGBT community around the world.  How does anyone approve such a hateful, despicable app towards the LGBT community? Especially when Gay Teens are killing themselves after being harrassed by their church, parents, as well as  by bully's and teachers at school. The idea that this app was used, solicited is disgusting.

Wall Street Banks Come Out in Support Gay Employees
Investment Banker Todd Sears Brings His 10-Year-Old Idea to Fruition

Todd Sears had been openly gay as a student at Duke University in Durham, N.C. So he didn't expect the need to be secretive about being "out" after he graduated in 1998 to work on Wall Street.

But soon after he started his entry-level job as a financial analyst for an investment bank, he heard someone at a nearby desk say a derogatory word toward gays.

He soon learned the traditional Wall Street work environment, with its stereotypically rigid culture, was anything but welcoming to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

After eventually joining Merrill Lynch, Sears, 35, said, he conceived of the idea of gathering the major Wall Street banks in an event for the LGBT community.

This week, 10 years after Sears first had the idea, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays, Citi, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley participated in the inaugural Out on the Street LGBT Leadership Summit in New York.

"My goal was to hear experiences from senior business leaders, who are on the front lines with clients at these banks, and to have open and honest discussions about how Wall Street can continue to improve," Sears, now principal of Coda Leadership Consulting LLC and founding chair of the fashion benefit, Jeffrey Fashion Cares, said.

"I also wanted to shed light on some of the amazing commitment of these six banks to the LGBT community, because that's not always a story that is told."

Seth Waugh, chief executive of Deutsche Bank Americas, said his firm had at least two reasons to participate in the summit.

First, it wants to "make sure Wall Street is an attractive place for all people," Waugh said in his welcome remarks.

He said the second motivation was "commercial," alluding to LGBT clientele of financial services.

The LGBT community is about 5 to 10 percent of the U.S. population, according to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Census data also show that the LGBT community is generally more educated with higher incomes than the average U.S. population, according to Brad Sears, executive director of the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law at UCLA and no relation to Todd Sears.

Employees Who Are 'Out' Are More Productive
The buying power of the LGBT community in 2010 was estimated at $743 billion, up from $732 billion in 2009, according to Packaged Facts and Witeck-Combs Communications.

The Out on the Street event at Deutsche Bank Wednesday was invitation-only for executives in the financial services industry who are at the "vice president level and above" and employees of the hosting banks. With an expected capacity of 125 attendees, more than 170 people attended the event, with a waiting list of more than 50 people.

The participating banks together have a market capitalization of about $449 billion and 889,000 employees globally, Sears said during the conference.

"My vision for this event is that it's annual, with the hosting banks rotating each year," Sears told ABC News, adding that while all the banks expressed a "strong interest" in hosting for 2012, Bank of America Merrill Lynch will be next year's host.

"Having said that, I think there will be interim events and gatherings, because this group is too passionate and engaged to wait a full 12 months."

With President Obama's repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy in December and headlines about the prevalence of bullying LGBT youth, workplaces across the country have varying levels of acceptance of its LGBT staff and clientele.

But research has shown that LGBT employees who are "out" are more productive and satisfied with their job, and more likely to remain in their positions than those who hide their sexual orientation, said Sylvia Ann Hewlett, director of the Center for Work-Life Policy.

Being "in the closet," can lead to "isolation and disengagement," Hewlett said at the summit.

Selisse Berry, founding executive director of the nonprofit Out and Equal Workplace Advocates in San Francisco, said she founded the organization because people are their most productive and satisfied at work when they can bring all of themselves to the job.

"Discrimination is bad for business and that's why so many of the Fortune 500 companies have non-discrimination policies that cover sexual orientation [87 percent] and gender identity [43 percent]. And those numbers keep steadily rising," Berry said.

'Unique' Financial Needs of LGBT Community
When he had the idea for the summit 10 years ago, he wasn't quite sure it would work at the time. Homosexuality was an especially politically charged topic in 2000, in part, because Vermont had recently become the first state to introduce civil unions.

Now, a number of senior Wall Street executives are "out" and several of the major banks have staff that target LGBT clientele.

Bill Moran, a vice president at Merrill Lynch Private Wealth Management, said the LGBT has relatively more "unique needs" than other affinity groups, such as ethnic or other demographic groups, because of their the complicated and varying legal status of LGBT couples and families.

Sears, along with retired Gen. Colin Powell, also started the first Veteran's Network on Wall Street while at Credit Suisse.

Berry said same-gender married couples are denied tax breaks that heterosexual couples enjoy, and are taxed on the benefits their domestic partners receive. Out and Equal co-sponsored with Google this week a seminar for human resource professionals to close the income gap and bring equity in pay.

Moran is also director of Merrill Lynch's nationwide LGBT Financial Services team, the first such team on Wall Street that Sears established several years ago. Several other banks now have LGBT networks, including Deutsche Bank's "Rainbow Group."

Moran helps train other wealth advisers, many who are straight, to better serve his LGBT clientele.

"We have two straight wealth advisors in Dallas who own the market," Moran said at the summit.

But there is also a danger in stereotyping or clumping together any affinity group.

Brian McNaught, called "the godfather of gay sensitivity training" by the New York Times, said he hated the abbreviation, LGBT.

McNaught moderated a panel at the summit called, "Wall Street as a Workplace of Choice: Culture."

He said he instead prefers using the non-abbreviated words: lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered.

"You should never use an acronym with people," said McNaught, president of Brian McNaught & Associates.

The speakers at the conference were not just from the LGBT community. A large number were "several senior straight allies" who are trying to recruit and support the LGBT community at their workplaces, according to Sears.

'Senior Straight Allies'
"To me, the most amazing stories of the day came from straight allies, who are often overlooked in the struggle for LGBT inclusion," Sears said. "Several senior straight allies shared stories of gay children, gay siblings and how important this topic is to them as well on a personal level.

"How to better include and leverage their passion and energy was truly a great takeaway and something we will explore in discussions to come."

One such ally at the conference was an executive at Morgan Stanley who shared about the recent experience of having her 15-year-old daughter come "out" to her.

After learning that, she acknowledged, she had initiated "awkward conversations" with gay colleagues to try to learn how to become a better mother to her daughter.

Not only did she want her daughter to be true to herself but, she said, "we need our LGBT leaders to be authentic leaders."
