HIV breakthrough `significant'

People with HIV who take combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) can reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to their HIV negative partners by 96 percent, a new study has found.
 
The results of the multi-country clinical trial, sponsored by the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID in the United States), are being hailed by researchers as a significant breakthrough in HIV prevention.
 
National Association of People Living with HIV/AIDS (NAPWA) Executive Director Jo Watson said the result would be a boot to people living with HIV.
 
"These findings add to the mounting evidence that HIV treatments significantly reduce the risk of passing on HIV," Watson said.
 
"This is welcome news that will give positive people increased confidence and hope. It also adds to the demonstrated benefits of starting HIV treatments when it is appropriate for the individual to do so.
 
"The idea that HIV treatments could have an impact on the risk of HIV transmission is something that has been theorised for some time, and has been the subject of intense scientific debate in recent years.
 
"These findings add further weight to that theory and open up the prospect of new HIV prevention techniques that will benefit HIV-positive and HIV-negative people alike."
 
While the HPTN 052 study findings will be welcomed by positive people, NAPWA has cautioned that safe sex practices need to be maintained for HIV positive and HIV negative individuals alike. HIV treatments are specifically for people living with HIV to best manage their own personal health, and Watson said NAPWA would continue to support other ongoing research about the potential benefits of treatments across diverse populations.
 
The study, conducted since 2005 at 13 sites in nine countries, recruited 1,763 couples, 97 percent of whom were heterosexual, in which one partner was HIV-positive at enrollment. None of the HIV-positive partners had taken ART, and their CD4 cell counts, a measure of the immune system's health, were between 350 to 550.
 
Half the participants received immediate treatment, and the other half did not start [therapy] until their CD4 count dropped to 250 or they developed an AIDS-related symptom.
 
Analysis identified 39 new cases of HIV among the previously uninfected partners. In 28 of these cases, genetic analysis confirmed that one partner had infected the other. Of these 28 infections, 27 - or 96 percent - occurred among couples in which the HIV-infected partner did not start antiretroviral therapy immediately.
 
The couples were all counseled on safe sex practices, given free condoms and provided treatment for sexually transmitted infections.
 
"This new finding convincingly demonstrates that treating the infected individual – and doing so sooner rather than later - can have a major impact on reducing HIV transmission," NIAID Director Anthony Fauci said in a statement.
 
Watson noted that the study was conducted in heterosexual couples and that further research will need to be done to confirm its applicability to gay men.
 
"Gay men still make up the vast majority of people living with HIV in Australia and we look forward to seeing further research focusing on this population," she said.

Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people. Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays!

By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.

So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC renew the clown's show after he pulled all such low-class shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! Target Corp (TGT.N) announced a 20 percent increase in its quarterly dividend on Wednesday, but its shares hit an 18-month low on concerns that the retailer is not seeing enough shoppers buy the discretionary items that are a cornerstone of its strategy.

Target's growth in recent years came from selling a wide variety of higher-margin apparel and decorative home goods along with basics such as detergent. Lately, consumers -- or "guests" in Target's parlance -- have focused on buying the basic goods they need and little else.

Guests are focused on the "value end" of the price spectrum, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Gregg Steinhafel told shareholders at the company's annual meeting, held at its first store within Pittsburgh's city limits. The meeting was webcast.

Following his prepared remarks, discussion of Target's retail strategy essentially ground to a halt.

Instead, Steinhafel was peppered with questions about a $150,000 donation Target made in 2010 to MN Forward, a group that supported gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer. Emmer, who lost the race to Gov. Mark Dayton, supported a proposed amendment to Minnesota constitution to ban gay marriage.

Several shareholders and shoppers were disappointed after Target donated money to the group. Musician Lady Gaga, who supports gay rights, walked away from plans to sell a special album at Target in early 2011.

Bill de Blasio, New York City public advocate and trustee of the New York City employees retirement system, which holds about $50 million in Target shares, said on Tuesday that he is "deeply concerned" when he sees those pension investments used unwisely.

A number of shareholders at Wednesday's meeting echoed his comments, repeatedly asking Steinhafel about the donation. Target has changed its review process for donations since the MN Forward donation, but some shareholders would like to see a more explicit apology and broader change from the company.

"Last year was a great learning experience for us," Steinhafel said as he repeatedly suggested moving onto a different topic.

"Does anybody have a question relating to our business that is unrelated to political giving? I would love to hear any question related to something else," Steinhafel said.

Analysts have expressed concerns that the company is losing some of its cachet -- and profit margins -- as the economic malaise being felt by shoppers eats away at spending on clothing and other goods.

In May, sales at Target stores open at least a year rose 2.8 percent, at the low end of the company's expectations of a low-to-mid single-digit percentage increase. Fewer shoppers came in during the second half of the month, it said.

"Shareholders missed a golden opportunity to pepper management on why the stock is at the levels that it is," said Wall Street Strategies analyst Brian Sozzi.

Target shares plunged 21.7 percent from the beginning of 2011 through Tuesday. Shares of Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) fell just 10 cents, or 0.2 percent, over the same period, even though the company has not posted an increase in same-store sales at U.S. Walmart stores in two years.

Target's board declared a quarterly dividend of 30 cents per share, payable on Sept. 10 to shareholders of record as of Aug. 18. Target had paid a dividend of 25 cents per share during the previous four quarters.

The shares of Minneapolis-based Target were down 0.4 percent at $46.85 in afternoon trading after falling as low as $46.53, its nadir since December 2009, earlier in the session. (Reporting by Jessica Wohl; editing by Andre Grenon and Gerald E, McCormick)
