Elton John Urges Fla. Gov to Save HIV/AIDS Funding

Singer Elton John wrote to Gov. Rick Scott urging him to protect a program that helps low-income HIV/AIDS patients obtain medication needed to control the virus after learning the state is considering changing the income eligibility to participate, which could increase an already long waiting list.

John, founder of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, told Scott that changing the income eligibility could add 1,600 patients receiving medication to the waiting list.

HIV/AIDS patients earning 400 percent of the poverty level or below are eligible for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program. The Department of Health has held hearings around the state while it considers dropping that income level to 200 percent of poverty as a cost savings measure. The program now serves 9,600 people and has another 3,482 on a waiting list.

"Given that life-saving HIV/AIDS medications can cost between $10,000 and $30,000 per year, this proposal would put these low-income individuals with HIV/AIDS in the untenable position of being completely unable to afford treatment for an incurable, communicable disease," John wrote in a letter cosigned by foundation chairman David Furnish.

The state Department of Health believes, however, that it may be able to continue serving all its current patients and possibly reduce the waiting list if it gets the increase in federal funding it expects, said Tom Liberti, chief of the department's HIV/AIDS bureau.

The budget Scott signed last week keeps state money for the program at this year's level, or $9.5 million. The Department of Health is moving another $1 million into the program from other parts of its budget. And while he doesn't know the final figure, Liberti expects an increase in the $85 million federal grant now available for the program.

"We're working as hard as we can for Florida to help solve this problem and I think with some additional federal sources and the economy getting better I think that we'll start to make some progress very shortly, " said Liberti.

Once he determines the cost of continuing to help everyone now in the program and the final amount in state and federal money available, he'll make a recommendation to state Surgeon General Frank Farmer on whether to go ahead with the income eligibility reduction. However, Liberti said he is confident that the state should have enough to help all current participants and is hopeful that the waiting list can be reduced.
 
John's Foundation hopes that's the case.

"The Department of Health has formally issued a proposal to change ADAP eligibility requirements, held public hearings across the state, and all indications are that Florida is seriously considering this harmful rule change. We would welcome any information to the contrary, and we hope the governor and other state officials will immediately block this measure from being enacted," said Scott Campbell, the foundation's executive director.

  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost it's case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating to anti-gay marriage groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

Urban Outfitters Faces Boycott Over Gay Rights

Urban Outfitters, purveyor of super-tight pink skinny jeans and belly-button skimming v-neck tees for dudes, is coming under intense pressure from gay rights groups and Miley Cyrus. Is it time to boycott the hipster factory?

Urban Outfitters is having a rough press month. After being outed for ripping off independent jewelry designers, the Twittersphere has reawakened vitriol about the founder's anti-gay campaign contributions.

Even Miley Cyrus joined the online anti-Urban Outfitters chatter last week, pointing out that president and founder Richard Hayne donated $13,150 to the political campaigns of Rick "gay sex leads to man-on-dog love-making" Santorum. She even went so far as to call the retailer "#SHADYASHELL." Sharp words from the super-chill salvia-smoking teeny-bopper.

The one message uniting blog posts and Tweets aimed at Urban Outfitters is that it's time to boycott the company and its brands, Anthropologie and Free People.

This sounds like a difficult boycott to mobilize, due to the store's immense popularity. I shop at Urban Outfitters. While most of the clothing fits awkwardly and falls apart too quickly, the sale rack in the back is one of the few places where I can afford to buy a cute dress. It's also by far the most convenient. But it's worth pointing out that if everyone who supports gay marriage decided to collectively quit Urban Outfitters and its sister brands for just a few months, they could freak some people out.

According to Wikipedia, Urban Outfitters has over 140 locations, supports upwards of 75 Anthropologies, and rakes in yearly revenue to the tune of $1.83 billion. A recent Gallup Poll suggested that 53% of Americans support gay marriage, and one can assume that among the young, "hip," Urban Oufitters-wearing crowd that number is higher. If all--or even half-- of pro-gay rights customers committed to quit the brand for one quarter (3 months) they would draw substantial press and cut deeply into the store's revenue for 2011. Make it 75% of pro-gay shoppers for two quarters and the company would start bleeding all over their floral jumpsuits and rubbery braided belts.

Urban Outfitters is confusing. The store sells funky duds that seem to aim at liberal, urban youth. In 2008 U.O. sold the Obama Head tees like hot cakes, as well as an anti-Prop 8 t-shirt with the words "I Support Same-Sex Marriage." In what seemed like an effort to further confuse the customer, the latter tee was pulled from the shelves because "they weren't selling."

In 2008, ThisIsMoney.co.uk hit it on the head when they wrote, "Hayne must be the only retailer whose expansion plans depend on no one finding out who he really is."

Many supporters of gay marriage are frustrated by how little is achieved by casting a vote for a pro-gay candidate. If that representative is elected, he or she is sent to haggle for rights with Republican lawmakers who usually, though not always, object to gay rights, as well as Democrats who are slow as shit to get anything done.

If U.O. shoppers could organize (and they can), America's urban youth and older people who dress too young for their age could send a message to corporations and Washington.

Then, hopefully, we could all go back to buying semi-affordable, super-convenient shredded denim shorts and graphic tees.
