Diabetics Should Avoid Caffeine

A study published in the journal Diabetes Care reports that diabetics may want to avoid caffeine. According to researchers at Duke University Medical Center, caffeine caused the blood sugar glucose levels of type 2 diabetics to rise throughout the day.

While previous studies show that people who drank coffee had a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, the study by Duke researchers was conducted using a tiny glucose monitor embedded under the abdominal skin to continuously monitor glucose levels. On the days participants consumed an amount of caffeine equivalent to four cups of coffee, their average sugar level rose 8% compared to days they were given a placebo.

Caffeine triggers the release of hormone adrenaline, which can elevate blood sugar levels, says researchers. Additionally, caffeine may also interfere as glucose from blood is transferred into muscles and other cells to be burned as fuel.

Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

A First for Gay Couples: 131,729 Reported in Census That They're Married

Last year's U.S. Census was the first time gay respondents could report themselves as married to a same-sex husband or wife.

More than 130,000 did so, but experts estimate the actual number of gay married couples to be lower, around 100,000. They assume a discrepancy believing that some couples who are not legally married think of their relationship as a marriage, and might report it as such.

The number of Americans who said they were living with same-sex partners nearly doubled to 650,000 from a decade ago, showing a greater willingness of gay people to identify themselves as couples. But this figure is probably still lower than reality -- researchers estimate by up to 15% - as homosexuals still face social stigmas and some prefer not to divulge their true sexual orientation.

According to Census data, same-sex partners that are married or living together make up only about 0.5% of U.S. households. Same-sex couples were reported in every state, including some marriages in states where gay marriage is not legal. The total number of gay marriages now is expected to have well exceeded the reported 130,000, because of New York's legalization of same-sex marriage this year, after the Census was taken.

For the 2000 Census, citing the Defense of Marriage Act, the Bush administration ordered the Census Bureau to recode same-sex-marriage responses to instead be counted as unmarried partnerships. Obama reversed the decision in 2009. (via AP)

Occupy Wall Street spreads to San Francisco

As the Occupy Wall Street demonstration enters its 12th day in New York City – and as progressive activists protest in cities across the country – Bay Area residents are preparing for a mass mobilization on the streets of San Francisco tomorrow afternoon (Thurs/29), targeting financial institutions and other entities that they blame for the economic plight of the average American.
 
While the mainstream media has alternatively tried to ignore the uprising or scoffed at its wide range of complaints, the activists involved say it boils down to the powerful doing well at the expense of the powerless, and actively widening that divide. And the manifestations are many: layoffs and employee benefit cuts by profitable corporations, a worsening foreclosure crisis and lack of affordable housing, small businesses that can't get access to capital, political corruption that scuttled real fiscal reforms, deep cuts to government services made worse by the right-wing's refusal to tax rich corporations and individuals, shady corporate tax avoidance schemes, an education system under assault, refusal to seriously address global warming and economic injustice, and a litany of problems created by the same small group of power brokers.
 
"It's along the lines of saying: Look, these people are screwing us in every way they can," Alysabeth Alexander, the political director of Servie Employees International Union Local 1021, told us.
 
That union and many others are part of the broad coalition – a group that includes university students, social service providers, religious leaders, economic justice advocates, the online collective Anonymous, and others – that is organizing tomorrow's protests in San Francisco, which will peak between 3-6 pm at selected targets around the Financial District, such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, and Goldman Sachs.
 
"Big banks crashed our economy and destroyed our communities. Budget cuts threaten our schools, libraries, and social services. We bailed out the banks. Now they need to pay," organizers wrote in an event invite on Facebook.
 
One of those organizers is Sarah Page, who has been helping coordinate various Occupy San Francisco events, which begin tomorrow with a 7:30 am "wake-up call" at the "night camp" at Steuart Street near Embarcadero and continue through a 4 pm demonstration outside the Federal Reserve Building and into the evening.
 
Her group's week of protest began last Saturday with a General Assembly in Union Square and will end with another one there this Saturday at noon. "There's more people camping and they've gotten very organized. Every day it seems like there's more people showing up," she told us. "There aren't really leaders, the people at the camp are really organizing themselves."
 
The week of protests, dubbed the Refund California Week of Action, has also been organized and chronicled by the website Make Banks Pay California, which says that this week's protests throughout the Bay Area will be followed up next week by protests in Los Angeles.
 
Will the protests that began on Wall Street and trickled into cities around the country catch fire in the same way those in the Arab Spring have? I suppose that depends on who shows up and what happens tomorrow.
