Health - Wellness - Exercise - Reflections:
Water-Proof Your Exercise!

By Emily Battaglia, September 13, 2011

Whether you're headed to the gym, park or local running track, don't forget to pack a large bottle of water along with your Nikes. Your body releases sweat during exercise as a way to cool down and prevent overheating. Sweat loss equals water loss, and for every hour you exercise, your body can lose up to four cups of water in the form of sweat. If you don't replace this lost fluid with water, you face the risk of dehydration.

Your body's muscles need water to keep contracting and to make your workout more effective. Dehydration makes it difficult to concentrate and causes headaches, fatigue and muscle cramps, all of which decrease the productivity of your workout. Here are some water tips your body will be thankful for:

•Drink one cup of water per hour 2-3 hours before your workout.

•Fill a large thermos with a quart of water so you always have water on hand.

•Drink at least 4-8 fluid ounces of water every 15-20 minutes during your workout, and start drinking a sports drink after 90 minutes of exercise or sooner if you feel fatigued.

And above all, don't wait until you feel thirsty to guzzle H2O!
Take Action:
  • Update: DADT has been repealed. President Obama has kept his promise!
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! In conclusion, O'Reilly expressed out-right Hatrad of the LGBT Community.
  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customers. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard? Perhaps TARGET would better understand the issue if they cared about David Kato - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay! That is because Uganda wants to kill gay people. Again, TARGET invested in a political candidate that would Kill the Gays!
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating over 1 mIllion dollars to anti-gay marriage groups + serious history of employment discrimination of LGBT community.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • NEW: "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC renew the clown's show after he pulled all such low-class shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Dump NBC because they re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! NBC, Really? Update June 1, 2011: Trump now claims that Obama's long form, original birth certificate is fake. And NBC keeps this hater? NBC, You Kidding Us?

Movie review: 'We Were Here'
'We Were Here' is a moving documentary of how the AIDS epidemic devastated and transformed San Francisco's gay community.

By Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times Film Critic - Sep 16, 2011

"We Were Here" shows that a situation you think you know can be something you haven't known at all. That is the surprise, and the power, of this unexpected film.

An extraordinarily moving examination of how the AIDS epidemic both devastated and transformed San Francisco's gay community, this clear-eyed and soulful documentary brings us inside the contagion in a way that is so intimate, so personal, you feel like you're hearing about these catastrophic events for the first time.

It's not surprising that "We Were Here" comes from producer-director David Weissman and editor/co-director Bill Weber, the team responsible for 2002's "The Cockettes," one of the few documentaries about San Francisco in the deliriously countercultural 1960s that allows you to experience what it felt like to be there.

Rather than bring in a wide variety of experts, "We Were Here" has chosen to extensively interview a handful of exceptionally candid and articulate survivors, four men and a woman who experienced the crisis and, sometimes alone among all their friends, lived to tell the tale.

Death is always present in their stories, "an avalanche of death" in artist Daniel Goldstein's words, death to such a staggering extent that the film feels like a real life "Contagion," albeit one filled with much more heart and soul than Hollywood epics can manage.

For as much as the devastation, what "We Were Here" also emphasizes is the way San Francisco's gay community rose to the challenge, turning itself from a group singled out for its hedonism to one celebrated for its tenacious will to survive and a breadth of compassion that surprised everyone involved.

"It happened in this targeted community of people who were disenfranchised and separated from their families," says AIDS counselor Ed Wolf. "And a whole group of other people stepped up and became their families."

"We Were Here" starts not with the bad times but with the Castro Street-centered party atmosphere that began in the mid-1970s. The film's subjects, which include florist Guy Clark, political activist Paul Boneberg and nurse Eileen Glutzer in addition to Goldstein and Wolf, are delighted to reminisce about how good the good times really were.

Then, in 1981, came the first hints of an end to paradise. Wolf remembers seeing a small hand-lettered sign in the window of a Castro pharmacy that accompanied Polaroids of a man with big purple splotches on his body. "Watch out guys," he remembers the sign reading, "there's something out there."

In fact, the film tells us, the virus that causes AIDS had likely arrived in San Francisco in 1976 and had already infected 20% of the gay population there by 1981, a rate that rose to 50% by the time a test for the disease was in use.

"We Were Here" follows the entire course of the contagion, from its beginnings as a mysterious "gay cancer" to how 15,548 people in the city came to die before the disease was brought under control in the mid-1990s. We hear story after flabbergasting story, about research projects where no one survived, about passionate kisses at death's door, about a father more upset that his son was gay than that he was dying. "I don't need to be here," Goldstein says, recounting his suicidal state after a particularly horrifying experience. "I thought I was going to lose my mind."

By contrast Wolf, who admits to going against the stereotype by being a gay man who "was terrible at anonymous sex," found his vocation when the epidemic started and joined the Shanti Project, which provided human-services assistance to people with AIDS. "My way of being with gay men," he says, still not believing it, "suddenly was perfect."

Because of the nature of the story it tells, "We Were Here" can be difficult to watch at times. Photographs and movie footage of the infected and the dying make it clear exactly how ruthless the disease could be.

Yet experiencing that despair also allows us to understand how remarkable the resilience of the San Francisco community was. We hear from Boneberg about political activism by dying people, determined to help those still alive, and about the resolve of nurse Glutzer. "I didn't choose it, it chose me," she remembers explaining to her mother. "I couldn't turn my back to it."

Because of the selflessness so much illness brought out in so many people, "We Were Here" is easily more heartening than depressing, more uplifting than wrenching. "How did I get through it?" Goldstein asks rhetorically. "I don't know, you just do it. It's not heroic." Viewers of this enriching film will likely differ about that.
