For Better Or For Worse? How Your Spouse Impacts Your Diet

When you say "I do," you are not just signing up for a lifetime of togetherness -- you're also, apparently, signing up for shared eating habits.

Researchers analyzed the eating patterns of more than 3,000 participants in the ongoing Framingham Heart Study to determine whether social ties influence eating behaviors and exactly how they do so. They considered the role that spouses, friends, brothers and sisters played over the course of 10 years. Overall, the analysis, published Thursday in the American Journal of Public Health, found that couples had the greatest impact on one another's dietary patterns.

"The hypothesis is that your eating behavior is going to be affected by those around you," said Paul F. Jacques, D.Sc., director of the Nutritional Epidemiology Program at Tufts University and one of the study's authors.

"With spouses, it has a lot to do with the stronger shared environment," he added. "One person is probably preparing food for the other frequently."

But it wasn't just couples who influenced one another; friends also appeared to share certain eating patterns, particularly when it came to regular consumption of alcohol and snacks. (For purposes of analysis, the researchers grouped the individuals into seven distinct patterns, including meat and soda eaters, sweets eaters and those who avoid caffeine.)

Indeed, the researchers found that in terms of influential eating types, the "alcohol and snacks" pattern reigned supreme, influence-wise. Across all of the social relationship types, it was the most likely eating pattern to be shared.

According to the authors, one reason for this is that drinking and snacking tend to be more social in nature.

"Items in this food pattern are easy to share and often require less of a time commitment relative to meals," they write. "In addition, in American society, alcohol is culturally associated with sociability."

Conversely, the light eating pattern -- which consisted of lower average food consumption throughout the week, even of healthier foods like vegetables, fruits and grains -- was the least likely to be shared across the various social relationships.

Jessica Crandall, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietitian Association, said that research like this is important for people to be aware of so that they can monitor their own eating patterns.

Crandall explained that when she begins working with clients looking to lose weight, one of the first things she stresses is the importance of having friends, family and particularly a spouse on board. While this might not necessarily mean they adopt your new eating habits, they should be cognizant of, say, ripping open a bag of chips in front of you, or bringing you a muffin as a thoughtful gesture.

Crandall said her clients get the support they are looking for much of the time. One couple, she said, not only changed what they ate, they got off the couch and started square and swing dancing.

But about half of the time, she estimated, her clients don't get that support, which can make it difficult to change eating habits given the crucial role relationships can play.

"You get very accustomed to being in that environment of 'let's go grab a bite, or a coffee, or a drink," Crandall said. "When you try to change what your typical habits are, that can impact your spouse or friends, and they may not be ready to change."

  • Boycott Arizona the home of "hater" - U.S. Senator John McCain. Arizona's Hateful anti-Immigration Law - encourages racial profiling and increases hatred towards minorities. A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?

  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.

In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?

Gay Soldiers Demand Missing Pay

The Department of Justice wants a federal court to dismiss a class action lawsuit involving 142 people who were discharged from the military under "don't ask, don't tell," and are now receiving a reduced pay grade because of their discharge status.

The American Civil Liberties Union announced the lawsuit Thursday, looking for a total of $2.1 million. The organization said the policy dictating the service members' separation pay was not part of the "don't ask, don't tell" repeal, so there was no change once the ban was lifted on openly gay military personnel. However, the Department of Defense can change the policy on its own, without Congressional approval, according to the ACLU.

Justice Department attorney L. Misha Preheim did not argue the merits of the policy, but said the Department of Defense should determine separation pay, as opposed to a court.

"The government is too embarrassed to defend the constitutionality of its policy in open court, so it is inventing new reasons to deny these service members justice," ACLU staff attorney Joshua Block said Thursday. "These veterans served their country honorably and deserve the full recognition and benefits that are afforded to other service members. The sums they seek are small to the military, but make a huge difference when readjusting to civilian life."

Separation pay is given to service members who were involuntarily discharged after at least six years of service, according to CBS News. However certain discharges, like those based on alcohol or drug abuse and previously, "don't ask, don't tell," can cause that pay to be slashed in half.

The case was brought forward by Air Force Sgt. Richard Collis, who was honorably discharged in 2006 after coworkers reported that he had been spotted giving a kiss to his partner in a car 10 miles off base. At the time of the kiss, Collins was off duty, and was not in uniform.

He told CBS News that he and his partner had always been cautious in public. "That one time I just happened to lean over and kiss him on the cheek," he said. "He said something sweet."
