MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - Conventional wisdom might suggest living in the country would be healthier than the city, but that is often not the case, according to a study comparing relative health across cities, suburbs and rural areas.
"Some of these rural areas are quite depressed, impoverished, with poor social and economic factors -- and they have bad health outcomes," Patrick Remington of the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute said on Thursday.
Remington, who expanded the institute's annual statewide study to a national study in 2010, said some of the least healthy places in Wisconsin were small country towns.
The County Health Rankings takes a snapshot of an area's health using rates of premature death, low birth weight, disease and risk factors such as smoking, obesity, drinking and crime along with education and employment rates.
One of the main goals of the rankings is to raise community awareness. This year's study concluded that 48 percent of the healthiest counties were urban or suburban, while 84 percent of the unhealthiest counties were rural.
Suburban counties tended to have the best health outcomes, Remington said.
"Some cities have better health outcomes than what you would expect," Remington added, pointing to some densely populated boroughs of New York as ranking well.
Not all high population areas fared well. Wisconsin's most populous area, Milwaukee County, ranked last in the state.
The study helped to change some behavior in Genesee County, Michigan, which ranked last among the state's 82 counties in the 2010 rankings.
Flint is the county seat of Genesee, which is north of Detroit and has been buffeted in recent years by the downturn in both the Michigan economy and the U.S. auto industry.
As president and chief executive of the Greater Flint Health Coalition, Kirk Smith is familiar with the problems highlighted in the rankings, including the county's high rates of smoking, obesity and sexually transmitted diseases.
"We always knew we had problems like that, but when you come in last in diet, health, exercise and nutrition, it's a good tool to wake people up," Smith said. "It raised a lot of awareness. It was key to really starting to generate a lot of action around things like health behaviors in our community."

Gay Flight 93 passenger Mark Bingham remembered in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO -- The gay rainbow flag flew at half-mast on Sunday in San Francisco's Castro District, in honor of Mark Bingham, one of the many passengers on board Flight 93 who fought back against the terrorists and forced the plane to crash into a field.
His mother, Alice Hoagland, still grieves for her only son, who was 31 when he died that day.
He called her from the plane to let her know that something was terribly wrong, but that he and the passengers were going to fight.
"'Mom, this is Mark. I just want to tell you that I love you. I'm on a flight from Newark to San Francisco and there are three guys on board who have taken over the plane and they say they have a bomb,'" Hoagland remembers.
Hoagland told Patch. com that she had no qualms about telling the San Francisco Chronicle on Sept. 11, 2001, that her son was gay.
"Ten years on, I'm so glad I did and I'm so glad that Mark had the confidence and love for me that he wanted me to know something very important about himself."
Forty passengers and crew were killed when the plane crashed into the field in Shanksville, Penn.
Bingham graduated from the University of California-Berkeley with a degree in international studies. He helped lead their rugby team to numerous championships. When he died, he was working in public relations.
He was survived by his partner of six years, Paul Holm.

Campaign defies regime that punishes homosexuality with death by sharing personal stories online

Iran's gay and lesbian community is struggling to win some recognition by coming out in defiance of a regime that criminalises homosexuality.
A group of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Iranians have posted videos of themselves on Facebook in a campaign to highlight the discrimination against sexual minorities in Iran where homosexuals are put to death.
Hundreds of Iranians in and outside the country have joined a Facebook page, called "we are everywhere", which encourages members to share their personal stories online. Members of the campaign in Iran have posted audio messages or videos which do not reveal their identity while some outside talked about their sexual orientation freely.
"As a gay person, my biggest problem in Iran is that I cannot be my real self," said an Iranian gay man, only identified as Mehdi, who has posted a video online from inside Iran. "I always have to play a role. I always have to suppress my own existence and part of my identity and hide myself in fear from the society and potential problems that I might face."
In the video, Mehdi has shown his face from his mouth down. "Like this video, I always have to hide a part of myself from others in my life," he said.
Another video of an Iranian gay man, posted from outside the country, shows a man with his face out of the image, who has written his speech on a roll of kitchen towel which he scrolls down in front of camera. "I am an Iranian gay. I fear to show my real face, I fled Iran, I escaped from my own family, I was driven away from my country. Now, I am a gay refugee in Turkey and count the days, we are everywhere."
Turkey is home to many Iranian gay asylum seekers who have fled Iran through mountains. Many of them have complained that they have gone to Turkey to seek refuge but had been subject to homophobic attitudes from locals.
In recent years, Iranian homosexuals have founded at least two LGBT organisations outside the country. Some opposition media, such as the website of Radiozamaneh, an Iranian radio station based in Amsterdam, have devoted a specific section to the discussion of the homosexual issues.
Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
