Sure, you knew it did a number on your liver, not to mention your waistline. But heavy drinking has another consequence: trouble walking and balancing that lasts long after you sober up.
Researchers in Hawaii asked 152 alcoholics who had quit drinking and 52 non-alcoholic control participants to do a series of tasks that resembled sobriety tests. For example, people stood still with their arms crossed, walked heel-to-toe, and stood on one leg. Then, they did it all again, this time with their eyes closed.
Alcoholics who'd stopped drinking for a month or two had troubles with all the tests, according to the study in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. Even those who'd been sober an average of seven years did worse on the one-legged, eyes-closed test than those who'd never had alcohol problems.
"It's not apparent when you see people walking--but if you test them, you see persistent deficits in balance," says study author George Fein, M.D., of Neurobehavioral Research, Inc., in Honolulu.

Are You at Risk?
We know what you're thinking: Did all that boozing you did in college leave you permanently teetering? It's not yet clear, Fein says. Scientists have previously detected these problems in people who drank so much they were hospitalized for psychiatric problems, and the people in the new study met official diagnostic criteria for alcohol dependence--i.e., for at least one year, they had problems with alcohol that could include withdrawal symptoms and drinking more despite wanting to stop.
Researchers haven't yet pinpointed the exact amount of alcohol or duration of drinking needed to throw you off kilter. The specifics likely vary from person to person, depending on factors like genetics and tolerance, Dr. Fein says.
Fein cautions that even one brush with alcohol poisoning can damage parts of the brain involved with maintaining balance, including the cerebellum. "We've been studying long-term alcoholics who drank for 15 to 20 years, but that doesn't mean you wouldn't see these problems earlier," he says.
Test Your Stability
If you're worried, try the balance test used in the study. Close your eyes and stand on one leg for 30 seconds. If you can't--and you don't have diabetes, knee issues, or another health condition that might affect your balance--your drinking could be to blame, Fein says.
If it's booze that's turned you into a human wobbleboard, there's no way to reverse these effects except to stop drinking entirely. Eventually, Fein says, you should recover most if not all of your equilibrium.
Of course, many of us are balance-challenged without heavy alcohol use.

A remedy: Demand Republicans to support Immigration Reform (The Dream Act). Further, Senator McCain voted against ending DADT and Blocked Immigration reform!
- Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?

- Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
- Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
- BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
- BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
- Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
- Remember David Kato, Gay activist - Uganda, who was slain because he is gay!
- "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. Did Rick Santorum Hear Audience Members Booing Gay Soldier?

At the Republican debate on Thursday, a gay soldier asked candidate Rick Santorum via video whether he would reinstate the just-repealed "don't ask, don't tell" policy as president. Several audience members booed, and none of the nine candidates on stage said anything about it.
It was a moment on par with the one in a previous debate in which Texas Rep. Ron Paul was asked whether an uninsured person should just be allowed to die, and several audience members shouted, "Yes!" Unlike Santorum, though, Paul made a point to rebuke the hecklers, and he deserves credit for that.
But Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, just stood behind his lectern and answered Stephen Hill's question as though nothing had happened. Surely if it had been a group of anti-war activists doing the heckling, he would have condemned them immediately for disrespecting an American soldier.
Santorum's silence has become a minor scandal in the past two days, and he has been forced to account for it -- which he did by claiming he didn't hear the booing and would have responded to it if he had. No one will ever know if that's true, and it could be, but it seems dubious.
It is true that it was only a handful of people booing, but the sound carried well because of the acoustics of the room, and it was picked up by the microphones and very much audible on television. It should have been audible to the candidates as well.
Democrats are not the only ones criticizing Santorum. Jim Geraghty, a conservative writer, panned him just as badly, writing, "It is troubling, and revealing, that Santorum's answer entirely defined Hill as a gay man first and as a soldier second, if at all."
Santorum's answer to the Hill's question, after the booing stopped, was strongly in favor of "don't ask, don't tell," but not overtly homophobic. He argued that "sex shouldn't be an issue" in the military, period, and that repealing "don't ask, don't tell" was a "social experiment" to give gay soldiers special rights. That's an extremely misleading argument -- the repeal doesn't give gay soldiers the right to have sex on the job; it just allows them to speak openly -- but at least he said that sex while on duty was equally inappropriate for heterosexual and homosexual soldiers.
But even so, his failure to condemn the booing audience members, who gave Hill no respect as a soldier just because he happened to be a gay soldier, was nearly as bad as making a homophobic remark himself -- and Santorum has certainly made plenty of those in his time, including comparing gay sex to pedophilia and bestiality.
After the debate, Santorum defended himself to Fox News: "I condemn the people who booed that gay soldier. That soldier is serving our country and I thank him for his service to our country. I'm sure he's doing an excellent job, I hope he's safe and returns safely and does his mission well. I have to admit, I did not hear those boos. ... If I had, I would have said, 'Don't do that, that man is serving his country and we ought to thank him for his service.'"
But when he answered Hill's question, Santorum didn't thank him for his service, either.
Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
